Justin Timberlake To Join Creative Team At Myspace

First Posted: 06/29/11 07:41 PM ET Updated: 08/29/11 06:12 AM ET

File this under 'life imitating art.' Boy bander-turned-actor Justin Timberlake has signed on to lead creative strategy at the newly sold Myspace.

The decision was announced by Myspace's new owners, Specific Media, Wednesday afternoon not long after the acquisition itself was made public. Under his new title Timberlake will take the lead at a "Social Network" all his own and develop the site's creative direction and strategy.

In a media release, Timberlake was optimistically quoted as saying, "There’s a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect. Myspace has the potential to be that place."

Besides his recent film portrayal of Internet tycoon Sean Parker, Timberlake's involvement in the music industry is likely what drew them to the celeb. It's a strong indication that Specific Media is likely to grow on Myspace's assumed role as a digital music and entertainment destination.

In an ironic twist, Timberlake's real-life "Social Network" counterpart, Sean Parker, waxed poetic on the failures of Myspace only last week.

Winklevoss twins sue Timberlake for stealing idea to revamping a social hub, from a movie he acted in, based upon the social network they invented......snap

This might actually work.

I'm guessing Timberlake is being compensated in a share of the company, and any large growth (up from an anemic 32m) could make him a truckload of cash.

Michael Eisner snuck into a business management conference, which was the only training he had ever received. Pretty sure if you've got the drive, you don't need the degree. My 2c...

better to start a whole new song than rework a messy composition that flopped, to go with the music theme. And a singer / actor is not a Chief Operating Anything until he gets his stripes in business, someone care to tell me where J-Tim paid his dues? This sounds like a lot of hurt feelings in the making.

He's so popular these days, it was probably a very smart move on their part to get him on the team. He gives them instant credibility as far as being current, cool and pretty funny are concerned. It remains to be seen whether he can help translate that into anything meaningful for MySpace users. I have an account, but I never go there anymore. Wonder if any changes he helps incorporate will make a difference. It cannot be a copy of FB. It has to be different. Folks won't use two different sites for the same purpose. The focus on entertainment is a good angle, imo.

I believe you meant, "assumed ROLE." Unless Myspace is indeed a pastry somehow connected to the entertainment industry, in which case I must be living under a rock.

lets see if he can do it. i have myspace and am getting tired of all the spam and porn showing up on my screen.
i have myspace to follow stars, singers etc and promote my books not to be subjected to all the trash.
lets see if they can revamp it . i know it has a lot of problems mainly creating backgrounds for your page..
