Summer Safety Tips For Kids (VIDEO)

WATCH: How To Keep Kids Safe From Summertime Hazards

As Alice Cooper’s famous song goes, “School’s out for the summer!” While the summer season brings some of childhood’s best joys -- summer camps, swimming and what feels like endless freedom -- it also presents parents with a unique set of safety hazards that need to be addressed.

“Today" show correspondents spoke with some experts and discussed the best ways to keep your kids safe -- even as they gallivant around in the sun.

“During the school year, [kids] spend about six hours a day under real supervision and professional care. once the summer comes, now all of a sudden they’re free and they’re out there making their own choices and they’re doing activities they’re not used to,” says Ron Shindel, former deputy inspector for the NYPD in this video cliip..

Areas in which parents should be particularly cautious include sun safety, internet safety, road safety and water safety. Many of the accidents that occur during the summer season -- such as the 4,000 accidental drownings that occur annually -- are preventable if parents and guardians and prepared with emergency plans and proper safety equipment.

The main message seems to be: “supervision, supervision, supervision” -- and buy a really large bottle of SPF 35 sunscreen.
