Monsanto Under Federal Investigation For Cash Incentives Program

Monsanto Roundup

First Posted: 06/30/11 12:58 PM ET Updated: 08/30/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Global agribusiness giant Monsanto is under federal investigation for using cash incentives to persuade distributors to use Roundup, the world's top-selling weedkiller.

Monsanto announced Wednesday the company would cooperate with the Securities and Exchange Commission's probe of its "customer incentives" programs and a subpoena for documents pertaining to the sale of Monsanto's glyphosate products in fiscal years 2009 and 2010.

The US-based company has allegedly been offering distributors up to $20 per acre to use Roundup, as well as Roundup Ready seeds, which have been genetically modified to resist the glyphosate-based herbicide.

The announcement came as the agricultural biotechnology giant reported a 77 percent jump in net income, an increase attributed mostly to the strength of its core seeds and genetic traits businesses.

"We made significant changes to our business this year, and those changes resonated with our customers," said Hugh Grant, Monsanto's president and chief executive officer, in a statement. "We earned their business and achieved what we set out to achieve: unit volume growth in our core crops, a successful implementation of our agricultural productivity strategy and sustained cost-discipline across our operations. That positions us well for the coming years and the mid-teens earnings growth opportunity we see for this company."

Net income attributable to Monsanto Company for the third quarter, which ended on May 31, rose to $680 million at $1.26 per share, from $384 at 70 cents per share a year earlier.

The agribusiness giant also raised its full-year ongoing earnings guidance to $2.84 to $2.88 per share, from $2.72 to $2.82 per share

Net sales increased 21 percent, to $3.59 billion, up from $2.96 billion in 2010.

When questioned about the SEC's probe on a Wednesday conference call with reporters, Grant declined to comment in detail, but he assured reporters Monsanto was taking the investigation seriously.

“Out of respect for the SEC and their processes, there’s really not a great deal I can say at the moment,” said Grant, according to a report by the Associated Press. "It's focused on (Roundup) and it's focused on our customer incentives and it's focused on the 2009-2010 time frame, and we are - it's early days, but we are, we're just starting document production and we are cooperating to our full ability."

Monsanto is also currently being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice for a possible violation of anti-trust laws regarding its dominance of the genetically-engineered seed industry.

The European Commission approved glyphosate knowing, as Monsanto did, that it causes birth defects, while the public were kept in the dark, the herbicide must now be banned .A corrupt USDA has deregulated all Monsanto dangerously genetically modified crops even after it was proven that they spread uncontrollably. Monsanto's crops are a fraud, yielding no more than regular crops promoted with a expensive fetus damaging weed killer.

Since GMO seed is designed to prevent weed growth but have been found
to carry a pathogen that makes it dangerous to other food plants and the
soil, any farmer that shares this seed is going against Monsanto's exclusive
contract. Taking money might make that agreement more binding. It's likely
nothing will ever come of an investigation.

Are you quoting ex-Purdue professor Huber's claim of a pathogen?.

Here's what Huber's former colleagues have to say: http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/02/purdue-scientists-refute-anti-gmo-claims/

You probably need to come to the realization that most science supports GMO, not the other way around.

And why no reaction to the long history of GMOs in the medical world? No comment? Why?

"Monsanto under federal investigation?"...to do an honest in depth investigation of this company would take a small army and you know phones are ringing in Washington to stop that before it starts.

Monsanto must be stopped.

They are altering the DNA of our corn, soy, canola, cottonseed, alfalfa..... 90 percent of all USA non-organic corn and soy is now genetically modified, i.e. DNA from one living species is injected into another living species. We are eating this stuff without our knowledge or consent. Organics may become extinct because it all cross pollinates. Foods that have been DNA altered should be labeled. We have a right to know what we are consuming into our bodies and Monsanto does not want us to know because they know we won't want to buy it.

I am glad they are under federal investigation for giving cash incentives to buy RoundUp, but they are so evil, this is like investigating Hitler for stealing cookies from the cookie jar.

Oh my goid......You mean humans are altering DNA in plants? Oh the humanity.......

Oh wait.......we've been altering corn and other plants for over a thousand years. oops.

As for injecting DNA from one living species to another..that's been going on in the medical world for over 30 years. Most insulin is now GMO. Did you know that?

You need to be a purist antiGM/anti-technology person and go protest diabetics and clinics if you are so uptight about transgenic processes.

The GMO plants fed to animals have caused miscarriages and health
issues. There have been no long term independent studies on how eating
plants or animals will effect humans. Past attempts at cloning animals have resulted
in animals that developed cancers and died much sooner than non-cloned
animals. Some things do not advance the human condition. They are merely
done for possible future profit.

Stop Monsanto while we can. They're evil, evil. evil! Their continuation to exist will permanently destroy our food supply with their infertile seeds. Then when fertile food crops meet infertile Monsanto crops, voila, hybrids and no more natural production in our food plants' world. Their plan is to disrupt a natural growth cycle. Don't laugh. Look like what they did with the corn. Irradition. And then look at the Roundup issue again. Bad. Very Bad.

Don't laugh? I can't stop it with such hilarious stuff you write.

Sooo....I see the eeeevilll plot of Monsanto is to sell me infertile seeds. I guess with no corn seeds being produced by my infertile corn plant it will be easy to combine. I will save fuel with 0.0 bushels/acre.

Thanks Monsanto.. you save me all that icky combining labor with nothing to combine.

A college biology professor filled me in on Monsanto years ago. This company, under the guise of scientific progress, is trying to take over the food supply of the world, eliminating choices regarding what you eat and how it is grown.

Search: Monsanto - there are far too many links to post here, you have to see it for yourself.

" ....is trying to take over the food supply of the world"

Oh please... It's not a conspiracy...it's called making a buck. What part of America is NOT like Monsanto? 90%+ of people who read HPost probably work for for-profit operations.

Even non-profits do nothing but send me letters begging for money or try to sell me overpriced fundraiser items. Church ministers beg for my money. What part of America does not want my dollars at some point?

Opps. Looks like they forgot to pay the regulators and the politicians. Under investigation? More like, in the process of being extorted, without any appreciable restriction applied, to benefit the health of the Earth or people. The proverbial smokescreen, to prove how much the DOJ cares. As if they are going to do anything to upset the lovers of Monsanto/Industrial Farming over at the USDA. But plant a field with hemp, and you can be sure the full weight of the DOJ and the USDA will crush you with no more thought than if you were a mosquito.

does this Squir-Stick really think that i believe this ???...i get a weekly newsletter and it said that Monsanto strong-armed their destributors and customers into using Round-Up and Genetically Altered seeds !!!!!!

For those who want to know more about genetically modified food they take the DNA of a fish that
can with stand extreme temperatures and splice it in plants so they can grow without frost bite. That is just one way. Here is a video about how it is done.

I heard Land-o-lakes is working with Monsanto to genetically modify their products also. The one people should really look out for is Apartame it is in Sugar free chewing gum(ALL) and diet sodas,Metamucil, and most diet foods check the ingredients for before buying it is a neuro-toxin and yes there is a lawsuit going on but not for people it has effected it is only right now because of the fact that they knew it was bad for people and still put it in their products. I know if there is a lawsuit I'm jumping in my memory is bad now and my son has a learning disability which he never had before we started chewing sugar free gum years ago. I as a parent would rather my child chew sugar free gum when he was growing up like any parent would it has been in the gum since Reagan became President. The problem is they will not take it out of their products now cause of lawsuit because that would be proof of their guilt.

In 1997 the total acres of farmland in the United States was 954,752,502 In 2007 The farmland in the United States decreased to 922,095,840. The United States Lost 32,656,662 in that time where the country increased the population by 82,203,334. So less acres of farmland to produce food for 82 million more people. Yet, food sits in warehouses rotting becuase the people of the United States can't eat it all. University of Arizona estimated 43 Billion dollars worth of food is discarded because it was not used. That breaks down to 40 percent of all food ready for harvest never gets eaten. The apple industry loses 12 percent of its crop just getting it to the market. The same study shows that people waste 14 percent of their food purchases. Average family wastes 590 dollars per year in unused food. The study suggests environmental impacts can be reduced by 25 percent through reduced landfill use, soil depletion and applications of fertilizers, pesticides and hervicides.

So advances in farming technology like seeds, farming equipment, Intergrated pest management and advancements in overall knowledge has allowed farmers to produce more food by using less acres while the population climbs. Farmers produce enough product to the point where the public can't consume it all. So is technology good, bad or indifferent?

For some reason our Government is paying Farmers not to plant, I guess it would be to drive up the prices of food.

Perhaps you might be thinking of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). But but but ... liberals are on record as supporting that conservation program. Do you dislike conservation programs supported by liberals?

Stuffed and Starved, by Raj Patel (Portobello, £8.99)

This is truly a book about global food. Scholarly, wide-ranging and clear, Patel explains how the world's food system got into such a mess. Anecdotes tell less of culinary treats than of farmers driven to suicide in India, Mexico, China or Korea, because they cannot grow enough to feed their families and pay their debts. We hear of children going blind for want of the vitamin A in half a carrot, while others face obesity and diabetes from a diet high in sugar; of people dying of starvation where there is food that they cannot afford to buy. Here is the patent for the very first supermarket, designed to cut labour costs; here's how Wal-Mart came to count 80% of the US as its customers. Here is the tale of soy, so dominant it's now "a tyranny to those who grow it, and a mystery to those who eat it". Patel's anecdotes illustrate a careful argument. By laying out the historical development of current systems, he shows that they are recent and potentially transient. Farmers' cooperative movements, local trade and personal choice can make a difference. His plea is for a healthier world, but above all one that is more just. JR
