The 10 Private Colleges With The Largest Endowments

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/30/11 12:32 PM ET   Updated: 08/30/11 06:12 AM ET

On Tuesday, U.S. News and World Report published a list of the ten private
universities with the largest financial endowments in fiscal year 2009, with numbers ranging from $4 billion to $26 billion. One common theme? The recession caused everyone’s endowment to slip. Even Harvard which—at $26,035,389,000—is about $10 billion ahead of any other private college in the country, had fallen 30% since June 2008, when its endowment was closer to $37 billion.

Check out our slide show of the 10 private colleges with the highest endowments and then tell us, are these schools worth it? Let us know in the comments section.

Endowments are very important for insuring the viability of a college into the future. When one observes how much schools with endowments under a billion or two impact how we live in a positive way it makes the old guard less impressive and the new miraculous.

A little secret in higher-ed is that the best and most accomplished students from schools you've never heard of are always being snapped up by HYPSM for faculty. You pay the big price for the big brand and often get the best instruction from the little folks; works for me. (Cal doesn't need to snap people up -- they just gravitate there as if the continent is a pin ball game falling into Berkeley)

I thought this would be colleges, but it's all just the universities we already know about.

How does the amount of endowment impose a burden of worthiness? Worth it to whom? The top five seem to have nearly permanent residence among the most highly ranked academically every year. They're generally mythologized as among the most prestigious every year. They aren't the most expensive; they're expensive but not the highest tuitions. However, all of the top five on this list have financial assistance programs that provide a full-ride to qualified students from families with family incomes under $60,000 and full tuition for qualified students from families with incomes under $100,000. Are they worth it? What constitutes "worth"?

No wonder Harvard, Yale and the Crew are so esteemed. It appears the size of the endowment means just about everything...

Disculpe, le escribo en Espanol. Yale tiene una programa muy bueno por gerentes pero tiene menos que viente-cinco anos de edad. Recomendo que busca 'us news and world report' por una grupo de cinquenta programas de gran reputation y duracion. Suerte
