Gaza-Bound Boats Barred From Leaving Greek Ports

Gaza Flotilla

CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA   07/ 1/11 06:28 PM ET   AP

ATHENS, Greece — American protesters on a boat bound for the Gaza Strip were escorted back to shore Friday, as Greece announced it was banning vessels heading to Gaza from leaving Greek ports.

The secretive attempt by the activists to head out to sea ended in failure after authorities in inflatable speedboats raced after them after their vessel tried to sail without permission from the port of Perama near the Greek capital, Athens.

"We shall overcome," the activists sang as security personnel watched from their boat just 10 meters away, according to updates protesters posted on the Internet during a brief standoff.

Greek officials appealed to them to turn around, arguing that it was not safe to continue, but activists responded that it was not safe in port because of fears of alleged sabotage of their vessels, organizers said.

On Thursday, an Irish ship, the MV Saoirse, said it had to abandon plans to set sail from the Turkish town of Gocek because of what it called Israeli sabotage. Earlier this week, activists said the propeller of a Swedish ship in a Greek port was sabotaged. Israel has not commented on the reports.

The activists were seen being escorted by a Coast Guard vessel and arriving back at the coast, according to Associated Press journalists at the scene.

The Greek government action delivered a major blow to a flotilla of nine Greek and foreign-flagged vessels and several hundred activists who had said they want to break Israel's sea blockade and deliver aid to the Palestinian territory.

The setback followed a week of administrative delays that organizers attributed to Israeli pressure on Greece, which is mired in an economic crisis and has grown closer to Israel as it seeks more foreign investment.

Israel says its sea blockade stops weapons from reaching Iran-backed Hamas militants who control Gaza, and had warned it would stop any attempt to circumvent its restrictions. A year ago, nine activists on a Turkish boat died in an Israeli raid on a similar flotilla, with each side accusing the other of starting the violence.

In Jerusalem Friday, Israeli military spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich claimed that according to intelligence information a son-in-law of Hamas leader Khaled Mashal, Hamoud Tareq, was among the organizers of the flotilla.

She said that Tareq is active in the Islamic militant Hamas movement and other terror groups.

The U.S., EU and Israel shun Hamas as a terror group.

Greece's Civil Protection Ministry said coast guard authorities were ordered to take "all appropriate measures" to implement the ban. It also said the "broader maritime area of the eastern Mediterranean will be continuously monitored by electronic means for tracking, where applicable, the movements of the ships allegedly participating" in the flotilla.

Greece as well as the United States had previously urged activists not to proceed with the flotilla, saying it could lead to confrontation and noting that there were other means of aid delivery. The protesters, however, rejected the option of funneling aid through Israeli channels and described the sea blockade as a form of incarceration for the Palestinians.

Flotilla organizer Vangelis Pissias condemned the Greek ban on Friday and argued the government had no legal grounds to block private vessels that were heading to international waters from its ports.

"The efforts to sail will continue," he said.

In Paris on Friday night, around 100 protesters held banners outside the Greek Embassy proclaiming "Gaza Let the Boats Pass" and "French Boat for Gaza." Two French boats were in the flotilla.

Michelle Sibony, a spokesperson for the French Ships for Gaza group, said "We don't understand how a European state calling itself democratic can prevent citizens from going aboard a boat that they purchased and sail in international waters without ever approaching Israeli territory – without arms, without threats. What right do they have to stop us?"

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said he had no confirmation of actions taken by the Greek coast guard, but reiterated the U.S. position that the flotilla was a "bad idea." He said the transport of aid to Gaza could be facilitated by the international community through established channels.

"I don't think it's a freedom of navigation, freedom of the sea issue. These boats are trying to make a political statement. If they want to get assistance to Gaza there are ways to do it," Toner said at a news conference in Washington.

The American vessel, dubbed "The Audacity of Hope" after the title of a book by President Barack Obama, was intercepted about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) out at sea, vessel spokeswoman Jane Hirschmann told reporters in Athens.

She said they prepared a pasta meal at one point during the standoff with the Greek coast guard.

The American protesters posted an audio clip on Twitter in which they could be heard shouting at the Greek vessels: "We are unarmed civilians... We want to be able to go on our mission to Gaza."

The passengers included Ann Wright, a former U.S. Army colonel who later worked for the U.S. State Department. She resigned from the U.S. mission in Mongolia in protest in 2003 as the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq loomed.

Also on board was Ken Mayers, a 74-year-old retired major in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Ridgely Fuller, who described herself as a "suburban housewife" and social worker. The youngest passenger was 22-year-old Max Suchan, who said he learned how to swim only a few weeks ago in preparation for the sea voyage.

One-third of the passengers on the American boat were Jewish, and nearly two-thirds were women, half of them over 50 years old, according to organizers.

Israel imposed a blockade on the Palestinian territory after Hamas overran it in 2007. It eased restrictions on its land blockade of Gaza after the international uproar over the deadly raid on the flotilla last year. Egypt recently lifted its own blockade of Gaza at the Rafah crossing, though cross-border traffic is still slow.

The flotilla activists said they were peaceful, but Israel has alleged they are in collusion with Hamas, viewed as a terrorist group in the West.

Elena Becatoros and Derek Gatopoulos in Athens, Sohrab Manemi in France, and Darko Bandic in Perama, Greece, contributed.

There’s no way anyone should have any delusions about how free as U.S. citizens they really are. There’s no law the Greek government has at its disposal to legally keep the ships in the flotilla from sailing. What has happened is the U.S. and Israel have pressed against te monetarily strapped Greek government forcing it to act in an illegal manner to keep the boats impounded. When U. S. CIA agents trying to pass as “Hiker’s” were arrested by Iran and charged as spies then U.S. protested loudly, when British naval personnel dropped a number of MI 5 agents off on the border and their boat shortly afterwards was arrested for having violated Iranian waters the British government protested vigorously, even thought in both instances they were guilty. The U.S. has positioned CIA agents in Libya as well as Libyan opposition agents who’ve been living in the U.S. for the past thirty years. The UN has found Israel’s raid on the Turkish Flotilla last year was illegal… Why should it have found differently when the raid took place seventy miles from Israel’s shores. Not only that, Israel contends publicly that it is not an occupying force in Gaza and if such is the case they should not have an issue with ships coming or going to deliver aid to the people of Gaza. The U.S. position is nothing less than criminal and establishes yet another instance of U.S. covert activity that results in death, deprivation and injury.

To whom it may interest: an interview with one of the passengers on Saoirse, an Irish member of the European Parliament: http://electronicintifada.net/content/mep-joining-flotilla-tells-ei-eus-honest-broker-image-sham/10111 Not exactly the portrait of a rabid pro-Jihadi that you'd expect from some of the postings on here.

I can really understand why so many Israeli's have grown to really resent the American Jewish community. they don't serve in the IDF, they don't see their friends come home from wars in Lebanon and the territories in pieces or worse. They don't live with the constant threat of terrorism or the daily attacks. but, they will take it upon themselves to self righteously hop on a boat and tell Israeli Jews what they ought to do (including compromising their own safety). Because of what they Imagine the situation to be. Than they will get back on the plane and go back to their cushy lives in the States. What nerve.

You are either being very sarcastic or you are uninformed.

The victims of the wars in Lebanon and Gaza and the OT are just 1% of the total. The 99% are Lebanese or Palestinian and include women, children, the elderly and sick as well as the countries infrastructure.

There is no constant fear of attack in Israel; but the Palestinians suffer constant harassment and humiliation from the IDF, the settlers and the Israeli civil government.

Excellent.

You might have added that in Feb. 2008, a Haaretz poll indicated that 64% of Israelis favor holding direct talks with Hamas in Gaza about a cease-fire and the release of captives. Note the disconnect with American zealots for Israel, who rant in this forum and elsewhere about arresting all of the participants in the Freedom Flotilla and charging them under federal law with "offering material support for a designated foreign terrorist organization."

Israel's true agenda in maintaining its stranglehold on Gaza and in stopping the flotilla is found in the words of the Israeli Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, Major General Eitan Danget: "[Israel] seeks to ease restrictions on Gaza further, while somehow preventing the Islamic militants who rule it from getting credit for any progress. Hamas must not be seen as ruling successfully or be allowed to get credit for a policy that would improve the lives of people."

Don't let anyone tell you that Israel isn't in the business of collective punishment.

However, the decision by the Egyptian people to open the Rafah border crossing is already having a "tumler" effect on Israel's scheme.

P.S. Your username is way too sorrowful for the lovely bluebell flowers in your photo. How about "BluebutHopeful," or "BlueHope"?

Just because someone criticizes Israel's policies doesn't mean they believe it doesn't have a right to exist.

I am seeing a lot of quick retorts against those who criticize Israel's policies, stating that [OP] is denying Israel's right to exist, etc etc.

Who is challenging that right? No one. We just want to criticize Israel's actions without being labelled as prejudiced or denying rights.

@discocapper: "An anti-Israeli hates Jewish Independence".

First of all, no one is talking about rhetorical baseless claims. Please who talk fact are labelled names.
Secondly, nothing is as black and white as you stated.
Thirdly, that statement of yours that I quoted, i've never seen anyone pull out a blanket statement like that. I am not talking about individuals who deny Israel's right to exist. I am talking about individuals who criticize its policies. BIG difference.

I wasn't speaking directly to you. I was speaking to the shrill anti-Israeli rhetoric that poisons most of the commentary, as in the lies about Israel's "policies." Most moral people can tell the difference between aggression and the response, which is as plain as the rocket and the bus it strikes. Criticism of Israeli policies is not anti-Semitism in itself. But lying about Israel's policies certainly qualifies. It's not hard to spot the difference ..... What happened to my post to which you've responded?

Let any country contemplating competing against Israel in an international yacht race like America's Cup be forewarned that, based on how they behave in international waters, that strange and unexplainable misfortunes will come your way. You might think of it as a curse if EVERYBODY in the world were not aware of how Israel sees rules in a different light from the way we do.

If The US, and the international community sent aid to Gaza, as the US spokesman said, then it will be a win, win for everyone..The Peace Activists made their voices heard, it helped bring light to the need for aid, The Palestinians will get their goods, The Americans will be the givers, and Israel avoids a confrontation..I Hope Mr.Toner does send aid thru established chanels...We Hope For Peace!

Mage the flotilla is much more than delivering an accordian to a young music prodigy or a dialasis machine to the hostital. It is about how Israel does not have the right to control every acpect of life for those 1.5 million prisoners. These US and Greek officials seem to think that they are above allowing what most people in the world think is fair.

Mage you must watch the State Dept. press conferences. Poor Tori Nuland was reduced to begging Jill to change the subject away from the flotilla. It is all about the simple question: Does Israel have the right to determine every aspect of Gazan Palestinian life? Those who say no must ultimately fight Israel to the death if a peaceful resolution cannot be achieved.
