Panda Escape: Clever Animal Makes A Run For Freedom (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/01/11 09:39 AM ET Updated: 08/31/11 06:12 AM ET

Run panda, run!

This little panda really knows the art of distraction.

What seems like a normal feeding and play session quickly takes a different turn. Things seem pretty normal here for the most part, until all of a sudden a panda takes off for the door.

He seems more curious than mischievous, but we have to imagine he gave the zookeepers quite a scare.

Look at him go!

WATCH (Seriously, watch the whole video):

That made me happy. I hope the panda got away into a green, leafy forest, instead of this concrete cell he is imprisoned in.

Any green leafy forests are probably strip malls now.

Pandas, beneficiaries of Unnatural Selection, consistently avoiding extinction because humans think they’re cute.

And because we think they’re cute, they’re a cash cow for the Chinese and pretty much any zoo that can lay their hands on them.

I suppose I could list numerous species that have been allowed to go extinct pretty much due to the fact we don’t find them so cute, but what’s the point?

People kid themselves into thinking they’re somehow environmentally minded because they just love pandas, oh and dolphins and whatever else hits their cute button.

When I look at Pandas I see past the cute thing, to me they’re emblematic of everything that’s wrong with our priorities as keepers of this world.

A hundred years from now we’re going to end up with a desert planet populated by sentimentalists, pandas, dolphins and koalas.

And the children will ask: “What happened to all the other creatures? The trees the plants? What happened to the global biosphere while you were hugging pandas?”

And those of you whose hackles have risen reading this will reply: “Oh but common, look at them, they’re so cute!”

So we should allow them to go extinct just to prove that we're capable of caring less about the cute ones? You are the one sounding self-righteous now. You are so enlightened to see past the cute thing. And you're amazing powers of observation and judgment of people you don't know are a wonder to behold.

Do you really think that the folks who "can't see past the cute thing" are the one's doing the work on behalf of this species? Do you think the people working to keep this species around don't have a greater understanding of the ecosystem in which this species lives?

This is an interesting debate on the issue. Both make good points. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/sep/23/panda-extinction-chris-packham I wish I could find the interview I heard with Chris Packham on his thoughts when he first brought this up in 2009. Can't say I totally agree, but he makes an interesting argument.

Also why we eat cow meat not horsemeat. Why a beautiful accused criminal has a better chance of being found innocent than an ugly one. Beauty wins the day.Humanity, it ain't cute.

Altho your basic premise is sound, humans used to eat horses all the time. Then we discovered that horses could be trained to be ridden while cattle weren't much good for anything but pulling things (oxen) and eating. Many people think cows and even pigs are cute; they just also think they're delicious.
