Americans may be gearing up to mark July 4 with backyard barbecues and festive firework displays, but the U.S. is just one of many nations which commemorate their independence in spectacular fashion.

While flag-raising ceremonies and parades are perhaps most often associated with American patriotism, both are also key components in other countries. Pakistan, for example, will feature national pageantry on Aug. 14 for Independence Day, while Greek celebrants will enjoy a two-for-one religious and secular deal, with Independence Day (March 25) coinciding with the Feast of the Annunciation.
