Jeff Sessions: Saying Millionaires Should Share Pain Is 'Rather Pathetic'

WASHINGTON -- Having the Senate declare that millionaires should share more of the pain involved in putting America's financial house in order is "rather pathetic," Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) declared Tuesday.

The top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee made that pronouncement after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) bowed to GOP pressure and yanked from the floor a resolution on U.S. military action in Libya in favor of moving to budget issues.

Reid's first measure in that direction is a non-binding resolution that states: "It is the sense of the Senate that any agreement to reduce the budget deficit should require that those earning $1,000,000 or more per year make a more meaningful contribution to the deficit reduction effort."

The measure describes how well the wealthy have done lately, citing statistics that say the median income of S&P 500 companies chief financial officers jumped $2.9 million last year alone, even though the "median family income has declined by more than $2,500" in the last 10 years.

The resolution also notes that 20 percent all income goes to the top 1 percent, and 80 percent of the nation's income growth over the last quarter century has also gone to the top 1 percent.

Sessions and his colleagues found expression of such ideas of little use, and said it only delays getting around to major cuts.

"It's a sense of the Senate," Sessions scoffed. "We're supposed to have legislation in place by Aug. 2 to deal with raising the debt limit -- and that's got to be real numbers and real figures."

"So I guess we can say we're beginning to talk about something with this rather pathetic response from the majority leader," he said. "I'm not happy about that."

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn) was equally unimpressed, but suggested it was a sign Democrats were getting ready to listen to the GOP.

"While today, obviously, we're not going to have anything really serious to talk about -- it's just a sense of the Senate -- my sense is that very quickly we're going to have something before us that actually is real," Corker said.

UPDATE: 9 p.m.

Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson commented: "Apparently, nothing irritates Republicans more than the prospect that millionaires and billionaires might be asked to share in the burden of deficit reduction."

UPDATE: 7 p.m. Wednesday

Sessions spokesman Stephen Miller clarified: “What Sen. Sessions called ‘pathetic’ was the Majority Leader’s Sense of the Senate resolution that is as misleading as it is toothless—one more distraction from our mounting crisis of spending and debt. Republicans pressured Reid into cancelling recess to do serious work—not bring up gimmicks.”

The Governmet is broke and can't do anything right. Politicians are corrupt liars. They are only in it for themselves. This is why we need to privatize everything. Corporations never go bankrupt. Corporate head office always does the right thing. CEOs are never corrupt and never lie. And they only care about the customer. ;-)

Please tell me you were being sarcastic. It has to be either that, or a CEO laughing his way to the bank.

Rich people are not interested in creating jobs in America. If they were concerned the'll bring back some of the millions they sent overseas.
To hire an American worker is very expensive. However, the future looks very bright. Jobs will come back when they cut your Medicare, social security, and every other benefit your forefathers fought for. Like most people say " We don't need those silly laws anymore".

. The days of American prosperity are over, as your great leader Obama said, there is nothing special about America.

Guess we are going to end up like the Greeks. Broke and begging ! Continue to think the solution is to tax the job creators and in less than a decade there won't be any money for entitlements.......

The Obama Administration admitted on July 1, 2011 (last Friday for all you democrats) that the stimulus that Obama signed has had no affect on the economy....now that's funny because if everybody will remember it was the same "the sky is falling" lies that got the signature. Same drama, same dance, same "secret" talks.

Obama will fall back on his old stand-by excuse: It would have been worse if we hadn't implemented our plan. Sorry, Barry, we're not buying it anymore. Actually, we can't buy it; we don't have any money.

Obama doesn't have a clue how to fix this economy!

Obama IS the reason for unemployment. Business is TERRIFIED to hire anyone while he is in office... .. Obama is NOT a leader, he's a demagogue. He's just a really horrible mistake!

At this rate, the only jobs left will be hauling blocks for Obama’s pyramid.
Obama promised change. That's what you will have in your pocket.

Where have you been? This has been going on BEFORE Obama got into office. Of did you just crawl out of a cave recently? I am guessing you are only listening to FOX "news". You should re-check the contracts of their "news anchors"....they are all listed as ENTERTAINERS so they don't have to stick to facts, and can make up all the falsehoods they like, without getting sued.

The point to this website is so we can debate. The anger and abusive you're exhibiting here in your comment to me closes down that debate. I suggest you, relax a bit.

Look at Obama. He can't figure out why the economy isn't getting better, why the green technology industry hasn't emerged, and why peace hasn't broken out around the globe. We know the reason why…..these are failed initiatives. They failed in Spain, They failed in Greece and they have failed throughout America… regarding Obama’s failed foreign policy you can’t make peace with people that want to kill you.

Obama has painted a target on business. Why would anyone be surprised business isn't hiring? Everyone's who's surprised by these lousy numbers, raise your hand. Nobody? Nobody? "Land of the free and home of the unemployed"

Businesses haven't been hiring since BUSH was in office. Wake up and look at reality.

Simple numbers based upon hiring in the past few month. There was none.. Think about that. That’s a disgrace. And the reason behind it is uncertainty about what regulations Washington will do next. THIS ADMINISTRATION has no plan or ability to restart the economy.

Liberals are funny people. They seem to think the more you tax the more jobs there will be. Don't they realize if American businesses have more disposable money AND are encouraged to invest here in America, then there will be more jobs for all of us....

I don't want to soak the rich. In fact, more power to them. Were I wealthy I would not want to pay more than my fair share of taxes. However, I do not want MY tax monies that are intended to bail out an industry being used to pay bonuses to the guys who put the industry in the hole in the first place. Nor do I want my tax monies used as incentives for big corporations to send American jobs off shore. Nor do I want my taxes providing revenue for companies that support politicians who advocate either of those rat holes just so the said politician can wallow in the public trough for the next decade.

Boy oh boy do I agree with everything you said. I was against bailing out the big banks and brokerage firms. I worked on Wall Street 1967-1990 and know that they
deserved it. Lehman was not bailed out and the sky did not fall. The "Boys" did
not like Fuild, CEO, of Lehman so they punished them. They saved Bear Stearns, I was a partner there for over a decade and they are BAD...but had contacts in Wash so they were bailed out. Chris Dodd Financial Bill, 2009, still bails out the "too big to fail"... DISGUSTING. The whole game is rigged, and I hate it.

This is what happens when you have a "leader" that practices in demagoguery: We fight with each other and the divisons get wider dividing the country even more. I don't consider that Leadership.
You can tax the "rich" at a 100% rate and it would only close the gap by 1%. What happens
when the "rich" run out of money? What happens when the job creators are hamstrung?
We need more tax payers..(jobs) and we must cut spending.

Are you serious? The rich in this country pay little or nothing, they have the loopholes. Run out of money, not likely. Corporations in this country pay to lowest tax of all the industrial countries. Wake Up. Since 2001 the rich have been getting tax cut after tax cut, what did the country get from that, deficit. Increase the tax on the top 2%, close the loopholes. Done.
