Tom Ford Talks China, Idea Of Beauty & Having Kids In Time Out Hong Kong

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/05/2011 8:14 am Updated: 09/04/2011 5:12 am

Time Out Hong Kong caught up with Tom Ford to discuss his upcoming film (he mainly kept mum), pressures of the fashion industry and losing perspective (he now flies "on some commercial planes") and the industry's obsession with China.

Writer Kawai Wong asked Ford about his decision to cast top Asian models Liu Wen and Du Juan in his spring/summer presentation, to which Ford responded, "Well, both of them I don't know very well personally, so I chose them for pure physical beauty. Women with strong character. With strong look." And when pressed further by Wong -- "Do you think people regard these Chinese women as beautiful because of their perceived Western features?" -- Ford remarked:

No. I think, and don't take this the wrong way, all of your questions have a very odd racist slant, because you have grown up here. And don't take that the wrong way; it's not a negative thing at all. Honestly, growing up in America and Europe, I don't think as racially as the questions you are asking.

[...]

But I was talking about the Western perceptions of beauty in the Asian face. The yardstick that people measure or judge beauty...

[Interjecting again] I find a lot of different women beautiful. Some women, you know...I hate Jewish girls having their noses done. [...] I see beauty, or maybe less beauty. But within every race there are very beautiful examples.

Some other tidbits from the sit-down...

On whether his line will fit everybody:

Well, I have to say if we have to talk about things like this, Americans are too fat. And in London they are starting to get fat too. So I have to say that if we have to talk about race system and nationalism, I find it refreshing that everyone [who is] Chinese is slim. The only thing we changed [at Gucci] was the width of the nose bridge on eyeglasses because it won't fit an Asian nose if it's made for someone's nose like mine.

On having children:

I always said I wanted to have children. And as I got a little bit older, Richard, who I live with -- we've been together 24 years -- did not want children. And so I decided not to have children. But if I have children, no one will know about it until the child is born. And no one will ever see the child because I certainly wouldn't use it as a press tool.

I agree with Tom, I thing the interviewer’s first question, did have a racist slang to it. It’s not as if Americans and Europeans haven’t seen other Asian, and find their beauty just as
appealing as anyone else’s beauty.

As to the comment about Americans being fat, it’s true, I just heard on the news this morning that ¾ of American adult are fat; the numbers are also alarming for children.

HIGH FASHION CLOTHES CAN FIT UP TO A SIZE 12/14.... NOTHING SHOULD BE BIGGER THAN THAT I ACTUALLY THINK IF YOU SHOULDNT BE OVER A SIZE 10 IF YOURE 5'5 OR BELOW.

BEING OVERWEIGHT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH EATING TOO MUCH OR BEING LAZY ALSO IT IS A SICKNESS AND AN ADDICTION LIKE ALCOHOLISM OR DRUG ADDICTION

I agree with him a little, Americans are getting fat and some are too lazy to exercise. They will carry that weight on them and swear they look beautiful and defend the weight, until there is a problem and they have to lose weight.

Ford finds beauty in all women--except of course fat American women.

While maybe Americans are getting heavier - Tom Ford (and other "designer's") are losing money - are they still too dumb to realize that FAT people need to dress to. So is it below him (and others) to make a clothing size larger than a 10 or 12? Does he think just because people are heavier they can not afford designer clothes?

Let the designers who only design for smaller sizes keep doing it...they will only let people with an open mind get their larger sized designs out there and they will probably be better made, nicer and less expensive!

10 or 12? They consider that too fat. Try size 0 to 2.

DESIGner clothes like his go up to 12/14 but they should not go past that as they loose their original shape and form and dont look the sane

One thing is inappropriately bashing comments, another that obesity is indeed becoming an epidemic with grave consequences for public health. However we're not supposed to say it out loud, just as in school we're not supposed to imply that any given student is plain stupid or lazy. It's in the culture here - eveyone's brought down to the lowest (or in this case the heaviest) common denominator.

Your generalizing. Asians are getting bigger, if you read you would know that. And not all Americans are fat. Plus as people get older your body puts on weight no matter how much you exercise.and speaking of beauty- just how much botox are you getting , nobody your age has no wrinkles without help

I'm proud to be an American. I'm not fat but so what. We do need to get in shape as a nation but I'm sick of people bashing us.

deal with the brand it's factual and well earned...if it bothers you don't enable that neighbor, family member or friend....just sayin

... and "Tom Fords" are too pretentious, vacuous and fake. Perhaps he doesn't realize that at any moment he can easily step aside and let any number of designers become the next person to make a fortune from mass producing the same suit pattern that's been used every year since 1932?

The emperor has no clothes.

How true. In a second John Galliano could escape from jail and fly to South America and we'd all be wearing good little Nazi pantsuits again.

I tell you one thing Tom Ford...they wouldn't put up with your chitinChina. They'd hate your life-style and your know-it-all attitude. The good ol' US of A is the best place to be, IMO. So tired of people putting down this country. Leave then!

I travel to China frequently. Why do you think "they" wouldn't put up with Tom Ford? It seems to me like he would do just fine there.
The US is a nice country to live in, save for all the ignorant people - many who are quite overweight and like to tell other people to leave.

How is he putting down this country? He's stating a fact that is well backed by statistics. I haven't seen or heard his say that his country is bad.
