Natalie Portman

UPDATE: People.com confirms that Portman's son is indeed named Aleph.
_____

PREVIOUSLY:

He's Natalie Portman's first child, and, if rumors are true, he has a very symbolic and orderly name.

A report at Israel Hayom relays that the Israeli TV show "Good Evening with Guy Pines," revealed that Portman named her and fiance Benjamin Millepied's first son, born in June, Aleph, which is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Portman, of course, is a native Israeli, having originally been given the name Natalie Hershlag.

The report on the TV show aired last month; The Huffington Post also received a tip last month that Portman had indeed named her son Aleph, but her representatives declined to confirm. HuffPost has reached out once again for comment, and will update when more is known.

What's in a name. Every generation has it's unique monikers. There was a time we would have thought Beyonce was an odd sounding name and now it is a household word.

Aleph? Really? She really named her kid the first letter in Arabic and Hebrew. I understand parents want to give their kids unique names, but naming her son that is silly.

It doesn't sound like Natalie Portman is revealing anything. Other people are though.

If you consider Aleph to be strange (and apparently there are a million Alephs on Facebook), than I'd hate to see how one would stand living in a city where names like Hamid Badr, Thuy Nguyen, Jiang Lin, and Jesus Gonzalez are common (like anywhere in NY or CA).

Seriously, how white can you be that Aleph is "out there"? Grow up.

if she is so proud of her heritage why did she change her real last name?

Using a stage name such as Portman is hardly a way to hide one's heritage. It is a very Jewish name. It gave her privacy as a child going to school etc.

Take it from a kid who's parent spelled their name different so they "would stand out". NO THANK YOU! Oh you stand out, but not in a good way. People would tell me to use my other name, well it was a "family" name and was just as horrible. All it does is make your feel like a freak. I think the courts will be swamped in about 20 years with people wanting to change their names.

Prayerfully, Natalie and her fiance aren't going to try and outmatch the Duggard family (given that Aleph is but theFIRST letter in the Hebrew alphabet. Does anyone know how many letters the Hebrew alphabet contains?
