Google Takes Down Over 11 Million CO.CC Sites

Google Cocc Spam Sites

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/06/11 07:09 PM ET Updated: 09/05/11 06:12 AM ET

Google has taken down over 11 million sites it has deemed "spammy."

According to The Register, the .co.cc subdomain, owned independently by a Korean company, is not an authorized second-level domain (such as .co.uk). Google classified it as a "freehost," meaning that it allows users to register single sites for free.

Oliver Fisher, a member of the Google Anti-Malware Team, wrote a post on the search engine's Online Security Blog to explain the massive take-down.

"Google’s automated malware scanning systems detect sites that distribute malware," said Fisher. "To help protect users we recently modified those systems to identify bulk subdomain services which are being abused. In some severe cases our systems may now flag the whole bulk domain."

The Register notes that a recent report showed that .cc had twice as many phishing attacks as any other domain extension, especially because of the .co.cc subdomain. The company that owns .co.cc says it has 11,383,746 registered domains.

As Search Engine Land points out, Google wiped out content from a freehost before. For example, the search engine banned a Polish freehost due to a large volume of spam.

Google's been vigilant about cutting down on spam since its early days, when employees had to manually search for porn sites to filter them out of results. Recently, the site introduced a series of changes to further cut down on spam and content farms.

I think Unfortunately, it was inevitable they had also paid important blogs with quality content. An alternative may be an article in this blog : http://vincicoppolas.blogspot.com/2011/08/ottenere-un-dominio-gratuito-tk.html

Its bs google should know this is'nt going to be tolerated . I want to be my own judge on what i can search for and decide on my own weather or not i will visit and return to a site. my www.cashcow.co.cc site is a purely educational site to show people how to set up there own free websites ive created video tutorials and spent alot of time. I think by using a redirect like co.nr people will get by but for now Im removing google chrome and setting my home page to search engine that is'nt filtering my searchs as much. google stated that resubmiting your site you might get reindexed but i have'nt seen one.

Ms. Lee: If this is an example of the quality of your knowledge, research abilities, and writing skill, perhaps you should consider a career that requires none of those. Televangelist, perhaps.

The automatic equation of sexual content and spam says all I need to know about "Don't Be Evil."

Did Korea unify recently and I missed it? Last I checked there's still two Korea's so a little clarification would be nice.

You've mistaken HuffPost for journalism. Don't be embarrassed - I've done it several times myself. It's akin to momentarily mistaking Britney Spears for a singer. It doesn't mean we're idiots; it's just a sign that we've become so desperate for a nearly extinct phenomenon that we're hallucinating it in a futile effort to stave off despair.

This one seems especially bad, just all kinds of misleading statements and vagueness. Breaking news, some computers are doing bad things in a general area of the world!

Google's been making an effort to get rid of spammy sites lately and it's starting to work. I don't like the idea of blocking 11 million websites at a time because a few thousand of them happen to be spammers. If that was the way to do things I'd never accept a Gmail e-mail since that's where the bulk of the spam in my inbox comes from. (So does all my outgoing mail, BTW)

But do you have the stomach to hypocritically censor sexually oriented material as intrinsically objectionable?

Seems all we have to do is isolate asian countries. If we do spam, viruses, scams would be drastically cut in the world.

Where do you get your information? Apparently, you just make stuff up. The majority of spam originates in the US.
06:06 PM on 07/07/2011
He said drastic... You said majority. That's the equivalent to Fax News's "Some might say" trick.

Stop it.
