Obama Twitter Town Hall: President Answers Your Questions (VIDEO)

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/06/11 02:47 PM ET   Updated: 09/05/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama kicked off his first Twitter town hall with – what else? – a tweet.

Using a laptop set up on a lectern in the East Room of the White House, Obama typed this message: "In order to reduce the deficit, what costs would you cut and what investments would you keep?"

The tweet set the tone for the town hall focused on jobs and the economy, and hosted by Twitter, the social media service. The White House sees social media as an opportunity for the president to interact with Americans directly, particularly the younger and more tech-savvy part of the electorate, as his re-election campaign ramps up.

Twitter selected the questions for the president from among the thousands of inquires submitted from people across the country, including Republican House Speaker John Boehner, who asked Obama, "Where are the jobs?"

"This is a slightly skewed question," Obama said of his political rival's inquiry.

The president went on to answer Boehner's question by noting that the economy is, in fact, creating jobs, though not at a pace anyone should be satisfied with. He said there was more the government could do to boost the economy but also said he hasn't always been able to get Republican support for doing so.

(See the tweets below. Scroll further for the rest of the article and a video of highlights from the event.)

Obama also used the town hall as an opportunity to deliver a remarkably critical line about Republicans who are fighting with him over raising the nation's borrowing limit. Obama said GOP lawmakers should not use their votes on that matter as "a gun against the heads of the American people" to retain the tax breaks they want for corporate jet owners and oil companies.

Twitter users had to keep their questions to the social networking site's 140-character limit. But the president had no such restrictions. He answered in his trademark, lengthy form to questions on college costs, immigration, collective bargaining rights, the debt limit, manufacturing jobs, the housing crisis and other topics as Twitter users sent queries in by the tens of thousands.

Twitter was boiling his answers down to 140 characters or less at . The White House was doing the same through its official Twitter account, (at)WhiteHouse. http://askobama.twitter.com/

The president took 18 questions from the Twitterverse before town hall moderator and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey turned the conversation around and read the president an array of people's responses to the live tweet from Obama that started the event.

Tweeters responded en masse with ideas for how to reduce the nation's deficit: cut defense contracting, trim the war on drugs, stop giving money to Pakistan, raise taxes, cut oil subsidies.

Obama found lots to agree with, but he also had lots of explanatory caveats. On cutting defense spending, he cautioned: "We have to do all of this in a fairly gradual way." On reducing foreign aid, he said lots of people have exaggerated ideas about what the U.S. spends overseas.

The first question asked of Obama concerned what mistakes he'd made in handling the recession and what he'd do differently.

Obama defended his stimulus program as "the right thing to do." But he allowed that his administration had underestimated the severity of the recession, and so he did not prepare the American people "for how long this was going to take" and the touch choices that lay ahead. Obama also said the problems in the housing market were more stubborn than expected and he'd had to revamp his assistance programs several times.

Leaving the economy briefly, Dorsey, the event moderator, said Obama received several questions on his decision to eliminate the space shuttle program. With NASA's final launch set for Friday, Obama defended his decision, saying it's time for the U.S. to look toward the future.

"We're still using the same models for space travel that we used for the Apollo program 30 or 40 years ago," he said. "Rather than keep on doing the same thing, let's invest in basic research around new technology that can get us places faster, allow human space flight to last longer."

A handful of journalists from newspapers around the country were asked by Twitter to join the event as "curators," a role that entails trying to generate questions on the economy from Twitter users and helping the company to identify trends in the inquiries.

The town hall also marked the first White House "Tweetup" – that's an in-person gathering of people who are connected through Twitter.

The White House invited about 30 people who follow the administration's official Twitter account, (at)WhiteHouse, to come to Washington to take part in Wednesday's event. The invitees were also meeting with senior administration officials following the town hall to share their thoughts on issues important to them.

Obama has taken questions from the public via social media, including Twitter, before. In April, he took part in a town hall hosted by Facebook.

Seriously, Corporate Jet Owners you want to tax more???? do you really think that this will have any impact on our natioanl debt?....typical Democrats...lets spend more, give less back and oh by the way raise my taxes....no thanks, you have had over 2-1/2 years now and the only thing you have brought to the table is Obama care which is a complete joke. Time for a major change in 2012....Obama you have shown us nothing than putting our country further into debt and your only answer to the American people is RAISE taxes!!! ...I've had enough!
03:06 PM on 07/07/2011
Fewer flights = less revenue for airports and destinations = even more people losing jobs. And you can't depend on this administration to add them back. Now we're demonizing corporate jet owners! Obviously they are all very bad people!

I voted for Obama, Am a Hispanic guy. My questions for Obama-------1. With unemployment so high, higher if you count the part-time workers that can't fine full-time work. Why is legal immigration still going at full speed ahead ? With unemployment so high , do we need more immigrants coming to the U.S. ?
2. The fed are doing a lousy job in securing our borders, why do you keep getting in the way of States that want to enforce the immigration laws ? Jose, Will not be voting in 2012, staying home. Why vote ? they don't listen to their voters.

I understand your frustration and not wanting to vote, but that could backfire. What are the alternatives at this point? We certainly know that the GOP has not offered any other great choices and if it is a tight race, those who choose not to show up make a big difference in the out come. If the 95,000 who voted for Nader in FL had voted Dem, we would not have had 8 years of Bush.
03:12 PM on 07/08/2011
You're right, we wouldn't of had 8 years of Bush. But that also means we wouldn't have had 6 years (you dems took over congress in 2006) of the lowest unemployment in 30 years, the highest stock market in history, and affordable gas prices. Everything went wrong after you dems. regained congress.

If Mr Obama, the alleged Ameriocan president, would do his job helping to bring all parties together as he promised instead of wasting time on these stupid games, vacationing, campaigning, and political posturing, maybe we could get something done. His boy leading the Senate has not produced a budget in about 2 years. Is it time to get serious yet?

My message to Obama ? don't mess with social security, for millions of Americans is all they got .
Obama said social security need to be strengthen ??? How ? by raising the retirement age to 70 ? no way.. Social Security is fine the way it is.. Why we are trouble ? politicians don't want to talk about it, Jobs going to China, that is the main cause of all the problems.. But who do i blame ? politicians who as we speak continue to approve more so call free trade. Free trade all it does is open the market for more American jobs to go out to other countries... Democratic voters are saying no more free trade , but Democratic politicians are saying more trade, why ?
12:12 PM on 07/07/2011
Because that is The Democratic Way.. Say anything to get elected. Do nothing that the people who voted you in want! Be an Independant voter..Choose wisely but don't stay home or..This guy will be re-elected as President

More Twitter questions:
1. Regarding shovel ready jobs, how would I recognize one if I saw it?
2. Is true that there must me no fewer than five union workers standing around watching that particular shovel job at all times?
3. Do they have to be standing or can they have chairs?

1. Where are the shovel ready jobs that you promised?
2. Will the continued demonizing business create new jobs?
3. Will the threat of costly new regulations create jobs?
4. Why could you not create jobs when you controlled the Congress and the Senate?
5. Please explain why census jobs were counted over and over as workers got new assignments.
6. Is there an emphasis on the continued creations of jobs in districts that do not exist?
7. How long does it take to create a "shovel ready" job?
8. Regarding "cash for clunkers" was the real goal to eliminate the number of cars on the road since a large number of the new car owners got repo'd when they lost their jobs?
9. Will Daley resign of the NLRB wins its case against Boeing?
10. Did Sasha and Milia get an extension on their homework, like your democratically controlled congress did last year? And if so, now are other people stuck doing their work for them?

1. Stimulus had too many tax cuts and not enough infrastructure jobs. Missed the road work last year? THOSE were shovel ready jobs. Get out of the trailerpark more often, hon.
2. I create jobs and am NOT demonized. Children cower when scared. Adults stand tall.
3. What regulations do you have a problem with? Name one that would harm your business.
4. You think that 30 years of bad policy can be reversed in 1 year? LOL
5. You are boring and silly without context and character.
10:21 AM on 07/07/2011
somebody I know didn't take her tolerance pills today!!! swengnikaerb, is that south or north jersey?
1) who had ultimate controll of 2nd stimulus ...starts with an O!
2) not sure what "create jobs" means since none were created except census jobs and those great jobs in non existent districts.
3) My office of 2 people has to have a handicapped bathroom. My business has to go to tremendous efforts to keep logs that nobody will ever look at. And there are some equally funny ones under OSHA and EPA. Not saying it is all bad, but you can tell that business owners weren't asked for imput which could have resulted in common sense and savings. Glass-Stegall did nothing as people got around it quickly, Equal Credit Opportunity Act was fine until Fed President (Syron) used it to get banks to lower mortgage loan standards and you know what happened after that. BOOM! Glad I had very little exposure then. Cap and Tax could come soon...
4) Most of those years were great. I worked hard and saved and invested well during those years.
5) You lose when name calling is all you have!

Here are a couple of regulations we, as businessowners and individuals can do without:
The Individual Health Insurance Mandate
The Employer Health Insurance Mandate
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Regulations
The Debit Card Interchange Fees ("Durbin Amendment")

I have more. Small, medium and large business are adversely affected with over regulation and mandates. How you can deny that, if you are a businessowner is beyond reality.

1. Less than a year after the stimulus passed, we had one MILLION more jobs a month than when Bush left. That's still the case today. 2. I never saw Obama demonizing business. Don't forget that even today, after passing the first Wall Street regulation bill since more than half a century, 40% of Wall Street still supports the Dems. And a lot of businessowner support the Dems too. In 2010, it was Obama and the Dems who were pushing hard to get a Small Business Loan bill through Congress. It failed because the GOP blocked it. The idea that Dems are anti-business is clearly a myth. If you look at history businesses are doing BETTER, in general, when the Dems control DC than when the GOP controls it. 3. Regulations create jobs indeed, because they prevent big financial disaster (where you loose millions of jobs) and they allow more fair rules of the game. That's why a LOT of Dem business owners support the idea of more regulations. 4. When Obama came in we were loosing 800,000 jobs a month and each month 100,000 more than the previous month. Less than a year after his economic policies were implemented, we were back at a normal, pre-recession level of monthly job creation (150,000 new private sector jobs a month). That's the result of one year of work done by the Dems and two Independents. At the end of 2009, Obama asked Congress to pass a second big stimulus, in order to start the second phase of the recovery (creating extraordinary job growth, so that the 8 million people who lost their job could go back to work). But by then, the GOP won Kennedy's seat, and with that the legal power to block bills. They blocked the second stimulus (that was fully paid for!), and EVERY serious jobs bill the Dems have passed in the House in 2010. The GOP refused to pass jobs bills in 2011 too. Result: we're still in the same situation as we were at the end of 2009: GDP is positive, the economy is growing, we have normal job creation, but the unemployment doesn't go down because the GOP artificially maintains the status quo. 5. link? 6. link? 7. not long, apparently.

This President has put his own agenda thru to ruin this economy. His people are still getting it wrong. Look what Reagan did when he took office after the Jimmy Carter days. The econonmy turned around. Why can't Obama see this ? There were no shovel ready jobs. You need to go out and read the stimulus bill. You wouldn't beleive what's in it. There are no shovel ready jobs ! They knew it and then changed their tunes to say 'saved jobs or created jobs.' Vote him out !
