The Best Places To Be A Vegan Prisoner

First Posted: 07/06/11 11:15 AM ET Updated: 11/07/11 03:30 PM ET

Jails aren't exactly known for their fine cuisine, but at least if you are a vegan and arrested in San Francisco, you can rest easy knowing that vegan meals will be provided.

In California, the law requires that vegetarian or kosher meals are served to those that observe diets for religious reasons. However, vegan meals are more of a courtesy than a mandate. In the mid-1990s, 40 members of PETA were arrested after demonstrating outside of Neiman Marcus. They requested vegan meals and ever since, vegan meals have been provided.

In other parts of the country, vegan prisoners are not always so lucky. There have been several documented instances of denying requests of vegan prisoners (see here and here).

So, if you're vegan and going to commit a crime, Idaho might also be a good choice. As of 2007, PETA ranks it the most vegan-friendly state prison system. Options range from lentil shepherd’s pie to veggie lasagna.

They should also get a stylist, a financial adviser, an image consultant and a personal trainer. Just because you rape and murder doesn't mean you get to live sub standard lives.

Can you imagine having to eat vegan food for life without parole? Prisoners would be begging to be executed.

nice! perhaps a wholesome diet will calm the criminal mind. or the lack of vitamins B12 and D will drive them to do worse things, who knows? Vegan food is yummy though.

mmmmm....tofu!!!!!

Unless you are consuming the flesh of exclusively grass fed animals - carnivores are MORE deficient in vitamin B12. And even then- by the time the animal digests the grass and is led to slaughter that B12 will be squashed by adrenal hormones released upon slaughter.

On the other hand, most vegans I know are CONSCIOUS of the deficiencies and detriments in the Standard American diet to begin with. We learn to food combine properly in our vegan lifestyle to be totally balanced. A little nutritional yeast goes a long way to provide great amounts on B12.

And don't even get me started on protein- guess what it is? AMINO ACIDS! Yup! And guess where you can find ALL of them- plants and legumes! YAY!

Not everyone who isn't a veg*n eats a SAD.

We are ALL omnivores, even a person who might choose to only eat meat is an omnivore, NOT a carnivore.

Eating grass finished and pastured animals is certainly preferable to those from factory farms, but, there is not anymore B12 in one kind of animal than another.

While plenty of people who choose to eat meat and dairy can also be deficient in B12, those who eat strict veg*n diets will still have more deficiency as a percentage of their group.

That's strange. I'm a conscientious whole food organic carnivore who does not have a B12 deficiency.

However, when I was vegetarian I was severely deficient, so much so that a vegetarian doctor advised me that a meat-free diet was not an option for me. Just goes to show, there's no one right answer.

In my golden years when I rob a bank for $1 like James Verone did to go to jail for health care, I'll be sure to do it in California or Idaho so I can maintain my plant-based diet. Thanks for the heads up.

Soy is linked with autoimmune disease, hypothyroidism and the development of goiter and a slew of other issues which negatively affect the endocrine and reproductive systems in particular. Indeed, recent research has indicated that soy lowers sperm count and the FDA lists close to 300 studies illustrating the negative effects of soy

Industrial Soy-based Diet & Illinois Prisons and Schools

Since 2003, inmates of the Illinois prison system have been fed a diet comprised largely of soy and soy protein isolate. Inexpensive by comparison to beef, cheese and other animal-based foods, soy seems a simple and easy way to cut costs – especially on a large, institutional level. Soy “cheese” replaced dairy cheeses. Soy protein isolate was mixed with insubstantial amounts of meat and served daily. Soy flour and soy protein were added to baked goods and other items.

Why shouldn't ALL prisoners get vegan meals at least half of the time? Cheaper for us and more nutritious for them.

It is a shame that politicians and state prison officials don't realize that they could save the tax-payers millions of dollars in lowered food and healthcare costs (for prisoners) if they would switch to a balanced vegan diet in prisons. Not only would the food budget go down, but the need for treatment for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and myriad auto-immune diseases would dramatically decrease.

The Supremes just might agree, particularly given the known problems with eating unfermented soy products.
