Arid Uka, Albanian Man, Charged In Frankfurt Airport Shooting

Arid Uka

DAVID RISING   07/ 7/11 01:14 PM ET   AP

BERLIN — German prosecutors said Thursday that they have filed murder charges against a 21-year-old Kosovo Albanian in the slaying of two U.S. airmen outside Frankfurt's airport and alleged he was inspired by online jihadist videos to kill Americans.

Arid Uka, who grew up in Germany, was charged July 4 with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder in connection with the March 2 attack. If convicted, he faces a possible life sentence.

Authorities have said that Uka confessed shortly after his capture at the airport to wanting to kill American troops because of the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan.

According to the indictment, Uka was radicalized over time by jihadist propaganda he saw on the Internet, and the night before the act had watched a video that purported to show American atrocities in Afghanistan; it was actually a clip from a film. The investigation turned up no connections with any terrorist organization.

"He was a single person acting alone radicalized through jihadi Internet propaganda," prosecutors' spokesman Marcus Koehler told The Associated Press. "That shows, in the opinion of the federal prosecutors office, how dangerous jihadist propaganda on the Internet is."

Uka's attorney, Jens Joerg Hoffmann, said his client gave detailed statements to authorities and does not dispute the facts of the indictment.

No pleas are entered in Germany, meaning when the trial begins the prosecutors will still have to lay out the facts for the court. Hoffmann said the best Uka can hope for because of his cooperation is for the judges to allow for the possibility of an early release after he serves 15 years.

"There are ample hard facts, ample witnesses, ample everything – what's there to dispute?" he told the AP in a telephone interview from Frankfurt.

The video Uka saw the day before the crime, entitled "what was done to our sisters," was actually a short clip taken from the 2007 Brian De Palma anti-war film "Redacted," Hoffmann said.

According to the indictment, Uka went to the airport armed with a pistol, extra ammunition and two knives.

Inside Terminal 2, he spotted two U.S. servicemen who had just arrived on an afternoon flight and followed them to where a U.S. Air Force bus was waiting to pick them up.

After 16 servicemen, including the driver, were on or near the bus, Uka approached one of the men for a cigarette as a pretext to get closer, prosecutors said.

"After the person confirmed that these were members of the U.S. Air Force on their way to Afghanistan, the accused turned around, put the magazine that had been concealed in his backpack into his pistol, and cocked the weapon," the indictment read.

He first shot unarmed Senior Airman Nicholas J. Alden, a 25-year-old from South Carolina, in the back of the head, the indictment alleged. He then boarded the vehicle shouting "Allahu Akbar" – Arabic for "God is great" – and shot and killed the driver, 21-year-old Airman 1st Class Zachary R. Cuddeback of Vigrinia, before firing at others on board.

He wounded two others – both of whom recovered though one who lost sight in one eye permanently – before his gun jammed and he fled, prosecutors said.

He was chased by an airman and apprehended by two German federal police officers.

His trial is expected to begin in Frankfurt near the end of the summer, Hoffmann said.

Federal prosecutors in New York City brought charges against Uka last month, but the criminal complaint charging him with murder, attempted murder and firearms counts is not expected to have an effect on the German proceedings.

Read up on the movie Redacted and the actual crimes it's meant to portray. I hate to say Bill O'Rielly was right about anything but here is what is said...

Commentator Bill O'Reilly has called for protests of Redacted and against Mark Cuban. O'Reilly claims that the film demeans US soldiers and may incite violence against them, and he has called on ticketholders to bring signs to Dallas Mavericks games and all theaters showing the movie, stating 'Support the Troops'.

Mavs owner replied "I think that the concept that the enemy will see these films and use it as motivation is total nonsense."

Wikileak fans should heed this cautionary tail about inciting the enemy. If your going to tell this story, don't dishonor the family murdered or the US military at large by making it anything less than 100% accurate, not some politicized anti-war fairy tail.

You mean like inflaming and manipulating public opinion of a free internet by falsely claiming that the shooter was influenced by Jihadist propaganda? That kind of 100% accurate?

Truth is not good or bad...it just is.

Here is the funniest part: The U.S State department spent the better part of the 1990s strong-arming Germany to change its citizenship laws. So, now ethnic Arabs or Kosovarians born in Germany are Germans, and hence eligible for the visa waiver program.

I have posted "jihadist material" here many times and I am about to do it again:

" o9.0 JIHAD

" (O: Jihad means to war against non-Muslims, and it is etymologically derived from the word mujahada, signifying warfare to establish the religion. And it is the lesser jihad. As for the greater jihad, it is spiritual warfare against the lower self (nafs), which is why the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said as he was returning from jihad..."

[...]

The scriptural basis for jihad, prior to scholarly consensus (def: b7) is such Koranic verses as:
(1) “Fighting is prescribed for you” (Koran 2:216);
(2) “Slay them wherever you find them” (Koran 4:89);
(3) “Fight the idolators utterly” (Koran 9:36);

This material is available in any Muslim bookstore and widely studied. Why?

The study of a given text is entirely different if it's studied in a context that is historical or academic.

Extremists, as you know, have a carefully-crafted set of interpretations and justifications for violence, which mainstream Muslim clerics have denounced emphatically and repeatedly. Just last year, one of the Muslim world's leading experts in jurisprudence, and one of the most popular Muslim leaders worldwide (his organization operates in 90 countries, and has over 1000 centers in Pakistan, alone), issues a 600 Page Fatwa denouncing terrorism, and declaring terrorists to be kafr - infidel - "no association with Islam".

This fatwa, issued by Sheikh Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri was certified by Al-Azhar University.

http://clarifyingislam.com/2011/04/30/600-page-fatwa-condemning-terrorism-by-internationally-respected-islamic-legal-scholar/

When I referred to jihadist material in my comment below, I was referring to the active discussions on the jihadist websites themselves, and the suggestion and/or encouragement regarding violence that takes place there.

Obviously, if mainstream Muslims shared the same views as extremist jidhadists, we'd see a lot more violence from Muslims, worldwide.

Extremists have a specific narrative related to defensive jihad, with which they try to justify their terrorism, per their sense of fighting a war.

http://cpost.uchicago.edu/

Per global attitudes toward terrorism by Muslims and non-Muslims alike, no one is buying the terrorists' poor attempts at justification, other than the few Muslims who do become radicalized.

So if most Muslims were historians or academics this problem would not exist?

If you are suggesting that the more educated the Muslim is, the less likely his becoming a terrorist is, that's not necessarily true. The typical profile shows the terrorist to be better educated and more wealthy than average, and middle class or higher. Bin Laden went to college, Zawahiri is an MD, Mohamed Atta had a degree in architecture.

Educating Muslims out of terrorism is not the answer, because ignorance is not the problem. The theology that encourages Muslims to kill for Allah is the problem.

The solution is the reform of Islam.

- Because there are times when even Ronald Reagan would admit that jihad is perfectly appropriate..

- Because if you look up the relevant verses and even just look 3 verses before and 3 verses after it is abundantly clear that the people one is permitted to fight are typically those who have broken treaties with the Muslims or violently oppressed the Muslims. There is no justification for attacking peaceful law-abiding non-Muslims who are minding their own business.

Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors.

I believe you know that I am not attempting to say that self defense is not allowed. What did I say that led you to believe that?

Was the shooting in Frankfurt self-defense? If the shooter read this, he might feel justified whether or not it was self-defense:

o9.0

"I have been commanded to fight people until they testify that there is no god by Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and perform the prayer, and pay zakat. If they say it, they have saved their blood and possessions from me, except for the rights of Islam over them." [...]

Yep.

For instance, also:

"If they withdraw from you and fight you not, but instead give you guarantees of peace, then God hath opened no way for you to war against them."
Quran 4:90

"If the enemy incline toward peace, do thou also incline toward peace, and trust in God for He is One that heareth and knoweth all things."
Quran 8:61

"The servants of God most gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say “Peace.”"
Quran 25:63

And, of course:

"Let there be no compulsion in religion."
Quran 2:256

Another friendly MUSLIM....Clinton was on the side of the Muslims as they invaded Serbia. When the Christians fought back....the US attacked the Christian Serbs. Not one mass grave that was claimed by the Muslims was ever found.

It was all a hoax to help in the expansion of Islam...

Muslims are on a new World Conquest and being aided by American Liberals.

I totally disagreed with U.S. intervention in Kosovo. especially considering how many Jihadsits and Al Qaeda were fighting there.
And Barak Hussein's silence on Syria, a far more well-defined enemy of U.S. is even more preposterous.
08:58 AM on 07/08/2011
Americans are becoming well versed in looking the other way. They can't admit that they backed the wrong horse first in Bosnia and then even more tragically in Kosovo. They wish to continue believing that it was all for the good, but all it did is result in the creation of two Muslim terror-states in southern Europe.

I remember how at the height of our bombing of Serbia Pentagon officials appearing on CNN (Clinton News Network) solemnly pointed out to us 'the mass graves' supposedly present on satellite imagery of Kosovo, but when the Serbs finally capitulated, as you said, not a single 'mass grave' was found in Kosovo.

Thank you, Bill and Madeleine! Thanks to your political arrogance and the short-sightedness it generated America will stuck fighting these fanatics for decades to come.

This is unreal... There was another such shooting at the Frankfort airport involving the U.S> personnel pickup / drop bus stop which resulted in deaths and injuries. On would have thought that the military would have developed a security system that would protect departing and arriving personnel... To me these soldiers died as a result of ineffective commander's which suggests that the commander should be sacked immediately.
12:28 AM on 07/08/2011
How are they going to do that?
03:16 AM on 07/08/2011
No this was the same case, only now the trial started.
03:59 PM on 07/09/2011
Great... and thank's - I stand corrected. I'll assume that the military has taken steps to prevent personnel being subjected to such attack's... One can only hope. If memory serves me correctly the U.S. has a large Airforce installation adjacent this airport adn with the amount of money its spending on "training and observation flights, it would seem they could just as easily fly personnel via military transport." However, their objective has to be supplementing corporate air carriers by paying them to transport our soldier's. Sublet or contracting street cleaning, Garbage collection, Prisons, Embassy Security, and corporate militia's... what a racket! All to sustain a terribly broken system of capitalistic greed that is faltering no matter what.

I would hope , that the German government sees the light ,and shuts down all the madrassas, who operate under the cloak of a peaceful mosque, and I would hope that the British and the French follow suit . They are the ones who teach all this hateful stuff. The sooner they see this as undermining western culture, the better! Their (madrassas) teachings consist for the most part of killing infidels, and establishing a Kalifate state.
