Late Returns: Romney Dreams Of Facing Bachmann, And Vice Versa

Mitt And Michele

First Posted: 07/07/11 07:35 PM ET Updated: 09/06/11 06:12 AM ET

Jonathan Chait is right that the recent numbers from Public Policy Polling should alert everyone to the fact that Michele Bachmann's campaign could do quite well in New Hampshire. But New Hampshire is the Mitt Romney stronghold, you say! Yeah, you can still call it that. But per PPP, Bachmann has "gained 14 points over the last three months and now finds herself within single digits of" Romney. Moreover, as Chait points out, "Even before sustaining serious attacks, his favorable ratings in New Hampshire are dropping at rates that ought to terrify his campaign." PPP says:

Romney's starting to show some signs of weakness in New Hampshire. His support is down 12 points from 37% on the iteration of our April poll that didn't include Mike Huckabee or Donald Trump. His favorability numbers are headed in the wrong direction as well. He's dropped a net 18 points from +49 at 68/19 to +31 at 60/29. He's certainly still the front runner in the state but he's not looking as inevitable as he did a few months ago.

Chait goes on:

Many reporters have noted that a one-on-one matchup between Romney and Bachmann is Romney's dream scenario. That's true -- it's his best chance to have the establishment rally behind him. I haven't seen them mention that it's also Bachmann's dream scenario -- she gets to face off against an establishment candidate totally unacceptable to large segments of the party base.

One of those dream scenarios won't come to pass, but for the moment, it's not quite clear which candidate has the advantage.

Matt Lewis says that Mitt Romney has an "aggressive strategy to manage the press." But is it "bullying?" Ha, no: is there a person alive that Mitt Romney could bully? Sakes alive! No, Romney will just have his alpha subroutines routinely checked to make sure they are operating within standard industry parameters be tightly "scripted." [Daily Caller]

I think this article is in the wrong section, this is not politics, this is comedy!
01:39 PM on 07/08/2011
Hope you're still laughing after Nov.2012. This "comedy team" would at least do a better job than the joker we have now. What he's doing IS NOT WORKING and if he doesn't get off the campaign trail and START being a president, then I am afraid our country is gone.

a LOT of presidents have had to deal with a congress of the other party. the problem with this congress and minority republicans in the senate is THEY do not want to, have not, and WILL not work with this president. In the words of the minority whip in the senate mitch mcconell who said his "single most important job" is to defeat the president.. he has done NOTHING to work with the president nor have any republicans..
Romney / Backman... that IS a joke..
like the bumper sticker I saw last year.. Nugent/Palin.. still laughing at that one

and McCain/Palin would have done better?
McConnell Minority senator in the Senate said it: 'the single most important thing he wanted to do was defeat the president in 2012".. not work with the president to solve the country's problems, not work with the dems to create jobs, not find ways to turn the economy around.. no nothing like that at all.. read that.. SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT.. he and his fellow No-publicans are attempting to do just that.. do ANYTHING even if is wrecks the world economy.. they are just selfish and doing the bidders of the Plutocracy we live in now..
Romney/Bachman... LOL that is still funny..
not as funny as the bumper sticker I saw last year though:
Palin/Nugent

That's the dilemma. America itself, despite clumps of people on the coasts, is homophobic, religiously nutty, and bigoted, and the Democrats lost the people when they started focusing more on social issues and less on economic ones. Of course the Republicans made hay out that.

The only way the Democrats can win is to stop championing every underdog cause that comes down the pike and focus on working middle-class America, whose only real interest besides what's on TV is jobs.

Think again, my friend....think again. The left is obsessed with her and Palin because they are scared to death either one could beat what we have now in the White House. They only rip apart those that can challenge his agenda.

Could be but he has to win the hearts and minds of the GOP which seems to be determined to build a neo-conservative theocracy.

Nah... that's just for show. Over and over, the Republicans have demonstrated that they can close ranks at the last minute and vote with a united voice. That's what dooms the Democrats. In the end, they go down fighting amongst themselves over minutiae.
02:01 PM on 07/08/2011
Determined to build a neo-conservative theocracy? How about electing a party that stands to PRESERVE OUR CONSTITUTION...instead of destroying it? How about a party that will GROW THE ECONOMY so we can get Americans back to work. WE ARE GOING DOWN THE WRONG PATH. WHAT HE HAS DONE IS NOT WORKING. It's time to stop denying that and start acknowledging that we need to do something different. Continuing to do the same thing is not going to bring different results.
