Mumpy Sarkar, 12-Year-Old, Commits Suicide To Donate Organs To Family

Mumpy Sarkar

Twelve-year-old Mumpy Sarkar ended her own life in an attempt to donate organs to her father and brother, but was cremated before her suicide note detailing her wishes was found.

The young girl from eastern India decided that suicide was the only way she could help her family, who couldn't afford eye surgery to save her father's vision and a kidney transplant to save her brother's life, reports The Times of India.

Mumpy killed herself on June 27 but her wishes were not able to be carried out. Adding to the tragedy, the suicide note explaining her plan was found the day after she was cremated.

According to the paper, the pre-teen told her older sister about her plan and urged her to join her for the "cause," but her sister "laughed it off" and left for school. Mumpy then drank Thioden, a pesticide and ran to tell her father that "she had dreamt that someone had poured poison into her mouth and her stomach ached." The girl was rushed to hospital as her conditioned worsened and she died later that day.

A local state council representative visited the family's home and promised financial assistance for medical treatment for both Mumpy's father and brother, reports The Daily Mail.

Lord, how sad. A young girl who felt so deeply, and wanted to help so much.

Just imagine how compassionate a person she would be if she had reached maturity.

The world is definitely poorer right now.

Hindu belief is that we live many, many lives. She sacrificed her life this time with the belief that she would be back.

Neither her religion or that of her family is expressed anywhere, that's quite a leap there. She was a worried teen who acted without thought, religion has nothing to do with this tragedy.

too bad she didn't know that drinking pesticides would've ruined her organs post-mortem anyway. :(

Sounds as if she was raised to believe girls are expendable, worth less than males.

She was twelve - a child - not even raised yet.

It's called innocence, and it doesn't recognize your stereotypes.

They probably couldn't have used her organs anyway(especially her kidneys)because she poisoned them. What a sad story!

Exactly - she destroyed the very organs she was hoping to donate. Sad indeed.

What a horrible story. What an unselfish little girl. Suicide bombers killing themselves to kill others, and this little girl kills herself to save others. Maybe radicals could have something to learn from this little 12 year old. Rest in peace little one.

I don't believe this story. Something is fishy. Regardless of the suicide note not being found, it states that the big sister new about the plan --- why didn't she speak up before her sister was cremated? Sounds like an Indian family trying to turn a suicide that would be shameful in their country into a altruistic action.

Maybe out of fear, shame, and guilt of revealing (at that moment) that her sister had mentioned committing suicide?
07:27 AM on 07/10/2011
And it sounds like you are quite the pessimist... and possibly even racist. The sister was likely terrified to admit she knew anything about her sister's plans. Additionally, women are treated differently in India. Speaking up is not something that may be done by women. Or perhaps she never had the opportunity. Remember she was in school, while the girl was carrying out her actions. Perhaps she did not see her parents, who were likely at the hospital, until the day of the cremation.
The point is all we can do is speculate, and considering a death is involved maybe its nicer to keep your negative speculations to yourself.

Please tell me what is "racist" about my comment? I base my opinion on my own life experience. When my grandfather shot himself, I thought he did it because when he asked me for a hug, I ran past him out into the yard. I was 12 yrs old. When my grandmother found him dead and I was told he killed himself - I told everyone it was my fault. The article said she had attempted to talk her older sister into doing it with her, but the sister laughed it off and left for school (local - not out of town). The difference here is that the older sister could have eased everyone's pain by telling the family WHY she did it. Sooooo, tell me again why you call me a racist?

What an idealistic 12 year old. This is exactly why kids 12,13,14 are just that. The brain is not developed enough to think in a reasonable and logical manner. Sad & tragic. Shalom

Selflessness as a tragic flaw -- heartbreaking and poignant. So, the world´s lost a beautiful kid. How I wish someone had told her how very much SHE mattered, every bit as much as her brother or father.

So many cultures encourage girls and women to sacrifice for the good of others.

Poor girl didn't know that you don't need to die in order to give a kidney and eye.
03:23 PM on 07/10/2011
In the US and UK etc. But who knows what the laws are in India. perhaps they don't allow living people to give up organs in such a way.

THe bigger "Poor Girl" is that there's nothing said about the issue of whether her organs would be a viable donation to either person due to rejection. She might have been doing it for nothing in terms of her family getting the organs.

Which doesn't negate the beauty of her intention or the fact that she felt that dying to help people she loved was better than watching them die

Poor thing probably didn't know that you have to have a match to get the organs. All this is a shame. She was a child. Children don't know a lot.

Organ donations legal in India.

Well to be fair I don't think she felt that, she was motivated out of a desire to help her family. But I agree that the story is horrible.
