Rent-A-Friend: The Original Video Companion

WATCH: Someone Thought A 'Video Companion' Was A Good Idea

The only way that Sam, your new VHS rent-a-friend, could make you feel happier and less alone is if schadenfreude is what does it for you. Clearly, Sam has a lot of problems and is just as miserable, perhaps more so, than anyone who might have picked up a copy of this tape.

On one hand, Rent-A-Friend (brought back into the light by the media archeologists at the Found Footage Festival) seems like it could have been a brilliant, avant-garde work by a lesser Andy Kaufman. On the other, it seems like this poor actor booked the worst gig of all time and gave himself over to his demons in the process. We're not sure which story we like better.

Either way, if you have yet to find a solid cure to the blues, why not give a video companion a try? It can't be worse than going out and trying to meet real people. Besides, Sam seems like he could really use a friend.
