No Unlimited Plan? Verizon Offers Tips For Cutting Down Data Use

Verizon announced last week that it would stop offering unlimited data plans to new customers as of Thursday, July 7. But don't worry: The company's provided a list of tips on how to keep your bill from skyrocketing.

Verizon's new tiered data plans will be priced at $30 for 2G, $50 for 5GB and $80 for 10 GB, with a $10 charge for each GB over the limit. While 2GB might seem like enough to keep you rolling in Internet glee, services like streaming music and video, combined with frequent downloads and heavy web browsing could get you in trouble if you're not careful.

Verizon will send out free text message alerts when data usage hits 50, 75, 90, 100 and 110 percent of their monthly allowance, according to a press release. Verizon also touted a few free tools that users can access to help monitor just how much data they've been guzzling:

  • #DATA - Users can dial #DATA on their phones to get a text message that will tell them how much they've used.

  • My Verizon and My Verizon Mobile - Customers can go to their My Verizon page online or on their phones to check usage.
  • Data Usage Calculator - Verizon is offering a free data calculator to let you know how much data is used by sending emails, browsing the web, streaming video and music, downloading apps and other common activities.
  • Data Usage Widget – Those with Android and BlackBerry handsets and tablets can download a widget to their phones that will track usage.
  • Verizon's also uploaded
to teach users about budgeting data.

Those with iPhones can also download apps that monitor data use, like the free DataMan or Consume apps. 3G Watchdog does the same for Androids.
