UPDATE: Atlantis successfully completed its launch.

The AP reports, "Atlantis and four astronauts rocketed into orbit Friday on NASA's last space shuttle voyage, dodging bad weather and delighting hundreds of thousands of spectators on hand to witness the end of an era. It will be at least three years -- possibly five or more -- before astronauts launch again from U.S. soil, and so this final journey of the shuttle era packed in crowds and roused emotions on a scale not seen since the Apollo moon shots."

--
(MARCIA DUNN, AP/THE HUFFINGTON POST) CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) -- NASA fueled space shuttle Atlantis for liftoff Friday on the final flight of the 30-year program, even though stormy weather threatened to delay the launch.

Forecasters stuck to their original 70 percent chance of thunderstorms or rain, as fuel filled Atlantis' tank in the pre-dawn hours.

Mission managers acknowledged it might seem foolish to proceed with fueling, given the dismal forecast, NASA spokesman Allard Beutel said. They said they would take another look at the forecast and decide whether it makes sense to keep counting down.

The four shuttle astronauts suited up after sunrise despite the still-iffy launch prospects.

"Have you done your rain dance for the day?" joked Aly Mendoza, the tank and booster rocket vehicle manager.

Atlantis holds a year's worth of supplies - more than 8,000 pounds - for the International Space Station.

An estimated 750,000 people are expected to jam Cape Canaveral and surrounding towns for this final shuttle launch, reminiscent of the crowds that gathered for the Apollo moon shots.

Among the expected VIPs: 14 members of Congress, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, four members of the Kennedy family, two former NASA administrators, singers Jimmy Buffett and Gloria Estefan, and the first shuttle pilot of them all, Robert Crippen.

By 6 a.m., cars and RV were packed into almost every available space along U.S. 1 in Titusville, with cameras already trained on the launch pad in the hazy clouds across the Indian River. Many had planted chairs and staked out viewing locations just feet from the water. Some were still cocooned in sleeping bags as the sun rose.

Kenneth Cox, 25, an airport employee from Danville, Ind., joined three friends at the riverside. Hauling Lucky Charms, fixings for s'mores and a bottle of champagne to celebrate the launch, they slept off and on as the sun rose.

"It's the closing chapter of 30 years," said Cox, who went to Space Camp when he was in the fifth grade and has been enamored with the shuttle program as long as he could remember.

"I definitely think it's a somber attitude out here, because it's the last one," said Cox's friend, Simon Lin, 26, who works at Walt Disney World in Orlando. "It's brought so much to the tourist industry in Florida, and that's what we are. Closing it down, it's going to be sad."

Cherie Cabrera, 23, a Disney World employee, tried to explain the attraction.

"It's just powerful," she said. "There are so few people who have the ability to go to space, and for all of us to be here on the river, watching it launch and feeling it rise and feeling the wind, you feel like you're a part of it. You feel connected."

John and Jennifer Cardwell came from Fairhope, Ala., for their third attempt to see the shuttle launch. Twice before they made the trip only to have a flight canceled and they weren't able to stay. They brought their sons, Isaac, 6, and 3-year-old Eli.

"This is our last-ditch chance to see one," said 38-year-old Jennifer Cardwell, cradling a sleepy Eli in her arms just after dawn. "This is the end of an era, and I wanted to be able to experience it. My son is interested in space and science, and I wanted to encourage that.

"It's that last frontier, that last place left for us to explore," she said. "We've gone all over the world, and this is what's left."

NASA must launch Atlantis by Sunday or Monday or it will have to wait until at least July 16 because of an unmanned rocket launch scheduled for next week.

The 12-day mission will close out the space shuttle program, which began with the launch of Columbia in 1981. Atlantis will join Discovery and Endeavour in retirement, so NASA can focus on sending astronauts to asteroids and Mars. Private companies will take over the business of getting space station cargo and crews to orbit.

Once Atlantis soars, it will be another three years - possibly five or more - before astronauts blast off again from U.S. soil.

This will be the 33rd flight for Atlantis and the 135th shuttle mission overall.

"Everybody should be really proud how we've ended and just finishing strong," Mendoza said.

Take a look at Space Shuttle Atlantis's most historic moments, as well as scenes from the final launch and highlights from NASA's 30-year shuttle program.

Obama pontificates about jobs, and then he puts all those people in Florida out of work. He's got a 1970s mentality. I'm old enough to remember that this kind of thinking was popular in the 1970s, and all we had was a huge bureaucracy that did nothing for us but required tons of money to maintain itself.
06:02 PM on 07/09/2011
One more time, the Obama administration DID NOT END THE SHUTTLE PROGRAM. That decision was made in 2004 after the CAIB (Columbia Accident Investigation Board) decreed that it would not be safe or economic to continue flying the shuttle after the International Space Station was completed. If Fox News has been saying that Obama ended the shuttle program, THEY ARE LYING.
06:46 PM on 07/09/2011
You'd know more about that than I. I don't watch Fox News. I don't even have a TV.
03:53 PM on 07/10/2011
Read http://www.nasa.gov/news/media/trans/obama_ksc_trans.html and tell me what part of that is '1970's mentality'.

What happened in FL has been happening since Pres George W Bush decided the fate of the Space Shuttle in 2004 and began cutting funds to NASA. Jobs have been lost steadily in the years since then, not just today. Obama couldn't have stopped it. As far as Obama 'maybe trying' to get money from Congress... you must not have been paying attention to the so-called 'news shows'. Congress, particulary Republicans is wanting to cut funding for programs for education, for the elderly, for children, for women, for the disabled and for infrastructure of this country and you believe these cretons are going to give funding for the Space Shuttle which Bush decided to cancel in 2004? Most evidently could care less because I have yet to hear from Boehner, Cantor, McConnel, Gingrich, Palin, Bachman and other presidential 'wanna be's' or very many other politicians for that matter demanding to continue the Shuttle.
09:45 PM on 07/10/2011
You're repeating yourself and repeating what others have already said, and it's getting tiresome.
09:49 PM on 07/10/2011
I don't believe Obama has a clue. And I just read his speech. Typical: a lot of hot air and no real substance. And since you know so much about Florida, why don't you come here and pay my bills.

The US succeeded in several manned round trips to the moon and over a hundred shuttle round trips with systems based on '60s and '70s technology. Both are feats that no nation has been able to duplicate even with today's digital technology. Each mission was another miracle in American engineering .They were able to maintain an excellent safety record considering the danger involved in each endeavor.Does anyone remember the early '80's unveiling of the Soviet shuttle? It looked like a twin to ours ;but looks aren't everything. It never flew successfully.I guess they couldn't get the rest of the engineering right. The point is that many of the brightest scientific minds work at NASA and the government should find the money to develop a program to continue their excellent R&D.One day our children and grandchildren will reap the benefits of their work just as we've become attached to new technology tht was developed by past NASA research.NASA is one government organization that was actually successful in attaining their goals.Privatization puts us back to Mercury/Redstone.

After the last shuttle flies the United States will rely entirely on Russian spacecraft to carry astronauts to the international space station

As a young man I was fortunate to have worked for a Smithtown Metal Products of Bohemia LI. While working for this company I built the landing gear support struts for the Lunar Exploritory Module (only 4 ever built, one on the moon, one in the Smithonian, one at the Lunar Mockup at the Space Center, and the one that burned up on the launch pad). For those of you who think that NASA was a waste of money, remember this, your Microwave, a result of NASA, Hi-Teck Ceramics, a result of NASA, Microwave Technology not just the oven, NASA. Hell much of our current advances in science can be directly linked to the Space Program. Lets hope we continue with it, look to the future for more advances.

Cordless power tools, Smoke detectors, Enriched baby food – NASA was experimenting with algae as a food supply for long space trips and found a component of algae has two fatty acids similar to those found in human breast milk. It led to the development of an enriched infant formula called Formulaid, to help babies’ visual and mental development. Space-age pavement – NASA’s experiments in cryogenics helped develop a process to freeze car tires to temperatures of 200 degree below zero. The tire rubber crumbles at that temperature and the waste is recycled into new products, including an ingredient used to pave highways.
You know those thermometers you need only stick on your forehead or in your ear? Developed in space.
The Golden Gate Bridge and the Statue of Liberty are both use paint developed to protect NASA launch structures from salt air corrosion, rocket exhaust and thermal stress.
Many orthodontists use ceramic braces that are bonded to the teeth and strung together with a nickel-titanium wire – developed by NASA. That wire has an amazing ability to maintain its original shape allowing space satellites to spring open after being cramped and stuffed inside a rocket and contorted inside a rocket.
Most eyewear today is made of plastic developed by NASA – it’s lighter and stronger than glass.

That is somewhat surprising since six LEMs (Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 & 17) landed on the moon. One acted as the lifeboat on Apollo 13. One was tested in earth orbit on Apollo 9 and one was test in lunar orbit on Apollo 10. There is one at the Air and Space Museum but there was no LEM involved in the Apollo 1 fire since that was on a Saturn IB with only the Apollo Command and Service modules. I believe that Grumman built at least 13 complete Lunar Modules and clearly 9 of them flew as above.

Even with bondo patches and stuff hanging off of it, it's still amazing to watch. Too bad NASA turned into another beauracratic boondoggle and lost it's soul. I hope e get back to where we explore space but I'd like to learn more about the deep sea. Maybe they'll have a yard sale and raise some cash to explore the oceans. I have a pin Werner von Braun gave my Dad(along with a lot of other people)from the Gemini program. All that's gone or in museums now.

Why is it people whine about spending when they never paid a dime?

OK, looseing the shuttle worries me, but thats the point! What else are we gonna loose?
02:19 AM on 07/09/2011
well you can always lose your house your life your kids car job FREEDOM... there is plently to lose losing a space shuttle is not the end of the world people.. .. -_-
07:44 AM on 07/09/2011
its a part of history we are losing with no direction to what is next. We must advance as a society with technology and NASA and the program have assisted us greatly

According to NASA we spent an average of 4 billion dollars a year on the shuttle program since its inception 30 years ago.
Guess how much we spend on Afghanistan per month? At least 4 billion dollars. Ya, in one month.
And that's just one war.
Those who think our space program is in any way a waste of money need to refocus.

I have seen many comments blaming Obama for the end of the Space Shuttle program....What nonsense...George W Bush ended the Shuttle Program on Aplril ! 2005 by Presidential decree...

Obama did cancel the Constellation program which was waaay over budget and not very smart. Why go back to the moon 40 years later when we can send a robot for a fraction of the cost? NASA had a press conference YESTERDAY to tout the Orion project which will replace the Space Shuttle and he us to explore deep space in a safer much more cost effective way....

The NASA Budgets for 2009, 2010 the projected budget for 2011 were more than any budget during the Bush Administration. An additional $1 Billion was channelled to NASA in 2009 and 2010 through the ARRA.

The administration has decided to kill NASA's Constellation program, crafted during the Bush administration with an ambitious goal of putting astronauts back on the moon by 2020. Obama's 2011 budget request would nix Constellation's rocket and crew capsule, funnel billions of dollars to new spaceflight technologies, and outsource to commercial firms the task of ferrying astronauts to low-Earth orbit. Do you get it? Obama is going to pay for our astronauts to be put into space with Russian rockets.

I can think of a lot of ways for our government to trim the fat in "stupid" government programs - I don't believe that doing away with our space program is a smart move. Especially right now with countries like China, Korea and Iran beefing up their military powers and space exploration., we can't afford to become second to these other countries. One more foolish decision amongst
the very many already made by our alustrious government.
