Derek Jeter Joins The 3,000 Hit Club (INFOGRAPHIC)

First Posted: 07/09/11 03:00 PM ET   Updated: 09/08/11 06:12 AM ET

Derek Jeter has become the 28th player in Major League Baseball history to get 3,000 hits, and the first to reach the milestone as a New York Yankee. The star shortstop joins Cal Ripken Jr. and Honus Wagner as the only three players at the position to reach 3,000. He is the sixth player in to accomplish the feat in 17 seasons or fewer.

3,000 hits in a career isn't what it used to be in the days of the shorter season. Today, a .270 hitter with a long career can reach it.

The two shockers for me, I didn't realize Craig Biggio had 3,000, and Ted Williams didn't. WW2 and Korea really robbed him of some more magnificent stats.

a) congrats to Jeter

b) When is somone gonna grow a peir and let Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame??

c) as a Brewers fan I'ld like to give a shout out to Paul Mioliter(I had a cat named after him growing up) and Robin Yount.

d) this has only happened , what, 28 times in all of baseballs players over 120 years of baseball. this is a big friggen deal.

I know this next thought is a little off the proverbial sweet spot but...I''ve always thought a good team stat would be a "runs per hits" category. I wonder too which of the above 3000 (+) hit players had the best "hits per at bats" (ie. lifetime batting avg.)? Now...if we could assign a numerical value to all individual player's various batting statiscs to see who was indeed the "best" hitter of the bunch. (Numbers, numbers everwhere. Let me count the ways.)
I would take; Roberto, Rod, Tony Gwynn and Derek on my team any day! (How many hits did Tony Oliva finish with?)

Thanks to whoever made this chart. It is a fascinating chart and it worked perfectly (unlike most interactive charts on the internet).

I'm not sure what this means, but five players, Lelojie, Speaker, Aaron, Palmiero, and Brock had their best year in their 6th year. For three players the best was the 2nd year; Waner, Yaz, and Henderson. The 4th year was the trick for Brett, Murray and Boggs, while the 11th year was the best for Rose, Carew and Biggio.
Half, 14 had their best year within their first six years. Just over 1/3, 10 had their best years from seven to twelve. Only four players had their best years after their 12th year - Collins (15), Gynn (16), Anson (16) and Molitor (19).

This indicates that even great players do not get better with age. The majority 15 had their best years between their 6th and 12 year. This suggests that hitting is based more on physical ability rather than any increasing knowledge that players get from playing.

Only four players had one of their best five years in the last five years of their career.
Cap Anson's had his 5th best year three years before retirement. Craig Biggio had his 5th best year four years from retirement. Robin Yount had his 3rd best year four years from retirement. Tony Gwynn had his #1 year just five years before his retirement.

Even great hitters don't remain great their whole careers, although they may have some good seasons.

Lots of well-rounded hitters on this list that I remember fondly from my youth.. It stands in sharp contrast to to free-swinging juicers that were prevailing in recent times.

The luckiest/unluckiest guy on the list is Roberto Clemente. Got his 3,000th hit in October of 1972, died in a plane crash taking relief supplies to Nicaragua after an earthquake in December of that year.

Batted .317 lifetime. The best defensive right fielder of his generation. 15 time All-Star, 12 times Golden Glove, MVP of the 1971 World Series. More than that, he was a stand-up guy who was the spokesman for Latin ballplayers at every level.

Every time someone gets to 3,000, I say a little prayer for the soul of Roberto Clemente, one of the greats of all time.

when I look at this list, I see a list of well known names. I also see some names I have never heard of, and when I google them, it's because they played so long ago. however, I do see my favorite baseball, and sports figure for that matter, on this list. he's one of 4 people to do what he has done, and he gets no credit for his accomplishments. oh, and palmerio shouldn't be on the list because of his admission to steroid use. eddie murray. 1 of 4 people to have over 500 home runs and 3000 hits. (like I said, palmerio used roids). so in my opinion, murray stands with mays and aaron. rookie of the year, 3 gold gloves, 25th all time HR, 8th all time RBI's (1st among switch hitters), holds the career record for sacrifice flies, 19 grand slams, 4th all time, hit home runs from both sides of the plate in the same game 11 times, a MLB record, and 6th all time in intentional walks. yet he keeps such a low profile, that no one really knows who he is. steady eddie. my favorite athlete of all time!

Cool statistic I never realized: The Milwaukee Brewers (organization established in 1969) had a player reach 3,000 hits before the New York Yankees...

Depends if you consider Winfield a Yankee, I guess. He played a lot of great years there, but has a San Diego Padres cap on his Hall of Fame plaque.

And the Brewers have two in the 3000 hit club, of course - Yount and Molitor. Those 80's Brewers really were fantastic.

No you're absolutely correct. And Molitor spent the majority of his career in Milwaukee yet hit #3000 with MN, so his team credit goes to MN.

Loved my Brew Crew in the 80's and early '90s...
