How To Help Somalia: Options For Famine Relief (UPDATED)

First Posted: 07/11/11 03:29 PM ET Updated: 09/09/11 06:12 AM ET

UPDATED August 10, 2011 7:12 p.m.

In the scorched-by-drought Horn of Africa, the famine continues to take its biggest toll on the most vulnerable.

In southern Somalia alone, the crisis has killed 29,000 young children in the last 90 days, the Associated Press reports.

UNHCR head Antonio Guterra, who has visited a refugee camp himself, is asking the world for help.

"2011 has been the year of all crises, but I think that in Somalia we can find the worst humanitarian disaster of this year," Guterres told accompanying journalists. "Our heart is broken when we see mothers telling us that after having walked for days to reach safety, they have lost their children along the way [and] to see children dying and then doctors not being able to help because it is too late."

Many organizations and funds have mobilized to provide relief:

The World Food Programme is appealing for $342 million to feed 11.3 million people in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia. The organization plans to airlift high energy biscuits and nutritious supplementary foods to those most in need.

UNHCR has asked for $136.3 million and suggests donations such as $7, which provides therapeutic food for a malnourished child.

The British Red Cross and The Kenya Red Cross are both accepting funds online or through mail to first mitigate the crisis and then help people in the region restore their livelihoods.

Mercy Corps has helped deliver water to 16 Kenyan villages in the last few days, providing relief to almost 120,000 people. The organization is accepting donations to continue expanding its work.

Oxfam, in conjunction with Save The Children, is appealing for $144 million. Any amount is welcome, but the Oxfam site suggests $50 to provide 200 people a day's supply of clean water or $100 to feed a family of six more than two weeks.

The International Rescue Committee is accepting donations that will provide medical screenings, expand water-supply systems and offer help for pregnant women, among other efforts.

The ELCA World Hunger Relief is accepting donations to provide immediate aid to refugee camps in the Horn of Africa. One hundred percent of donations will be used for regional relief, including filling a food distribution gap by providing enriched porridge to children and the elderly who are too weak to eat dry food.

A donation to Action Aid will help deliver emergency supplies of food and water, and provide support, ensuring people don't become reliant on food aid.

The U.N. Children's Fund asks for help in assisting the more than 2 million children who are malnourished.

International Medical Corps' is accepting donations as it ships food and oil to four refugee camps. The Corps will also construct additional latrines and bathing areas.

I am not a cold heartless person, but I do not have the money to give to other countries. I try to do the right thing and help as much as I can when I can. I believe that we should get our own on their feet before we can help other countries. Think about it, who is going to want our help if we can't help ourselves? In a way I agree with some of the people on here when they say that we should use the money for us. I mean we have given so much out and got nothing but heart ache and pain in return.

I typically don't respond to comments I read on news sites, just because most of it doesn't really matter. However, your comments struck me as both COLD and HEARTLESS and so I felt compelled to write something. Now when I say that I am neither a cold or heartless person, I actually mean it…

I’m sitting here in the luxury of my air conditioned home reading an article on my high tech laptop waiting for my beautiful children to wake up from their cozy beds. When they finally do wake up I will cook them a delicious breakfast from a wide array of options that are currently filling our refrigerator and cupboards. My children and I will (most likely) never know what it’s like to not have food at our table; we will never have to endure the pain of starvation like so many of our fellow human beings are currently suffering in Africa. And for all of this I am very thankful…thankful that I have been given so many blessings in my life.

Am I a rich person? No. However, I am an average American citizen who has been able to take advantage of all the opportunities that every other average American has been presented with. I went to an average public elementary, middle and high school. After graduation I went to an average 2 year community college before transferring to an average state university. I’m just an average guy.

First of all, do you watch the news? There are so many people that are starving and can not take care of themselves. As for the so called "Help" that the USA offers...Do you know how hard it is for someone to get on medical insurance, Food stamps, or any other so called wonderful thing that this country offers? You are blessed for everything that you have. I never said that we should let them die of hunger or anything else. If we could help, then by all means, do so, but we DO have millions of people who are NOT blessed with homes, or food, or anything like that here. How can we help the other country if we can't even help our own? I try to give to the people here because I know they are actually getting it. Cold and heartless? Look at the facts before you say that about someone please. I am glad you have your life right, but there are others out there that are struggling so bad that they are losing everything. They are dying from hunger, illnesses, and other things because they do not have funds for it. Guess where they are...Here in the United States.

I’m only pointing this ‘averageness’ out because like many other Americans including yourself I don’t have a lot of extra money to “give to other countries” but…What I do have is a HEART!!! I have compassion for others; I have a little thing called empathy! I have the ability to put myself in another person’s shoes and attempt to understand what it must be like to NOT be able to feed their children or have an opportunity to get a job or grow a crop.

Since I’m not in a position to help these suffering people financially, at the VERY LEAST I’m going to give them my compassion. Not go on a website pretending to be a victim and suggest that we…”use the money for us”. Of all the things I’ve read on the matter, your comment struck me as the most selfish thing I have read! You say that we need to help our own? Are you kidding me? We live in the United States of America, the greatest country on earth. We, however rich or poor, were automatically provided with the means to help ourselves.

I have never seen so many blatantly racist and hateful comments on the Huffington Post. It is very saddening.
09:18 AM on 08/25/2011
Wow...every comment I read was a pity party about themselves. I see intolerance, racism, and lack of empathy. I never realized how cold and mean some people are. If you don't want to donate, that's fine, it's your decision and respected...but to take the time to write heartless, cold comments is just not right. These people are living like starving animals. I have to wonder if you would even take the time to help your next door neighbor. Everyone deserves respect, even though you don't support their plight.

As is Operation USA, www.opusa.org 800-678-7255 or text AID to 50555. The NGO is providing water purification chemicals to partner agencies in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. Corporate donations of relief commodities are also welcome.

It's amazing to me the level of apathy in these comments. I expected a few people to have hateful things to say, but page after page of comments with no one having any sympathy for people literally starving to death. Because some of the people in this country are pirates or support terrorism therefore children should die? You live a very sheltered life in America and have the luxury to sit on your computer and judge those in different circumstances than you. What if it were you or your children? Is this the kind of world you want to live in? A world where the rich blow off the less fortunate and allow them to die when it is within their power to help? America is a great country because we help others less fortunate than ourselves, even when those people don't always return the favor. We're great because we have compassion even when others don't have compassion for us. We should be the world police because no one else will take the job. It's within our power to make the world a better place, and we should take the initiative.

I'd help if I cared, but I honestly don't.....and that doesn't make me heartless and compassionless........
09:39 AM on 08/13/2011
Not caring is the definition of compassionless

Well said. What is wrong with everyone? Everyone is so concerned with our problems in America - oh man, I have a masters degree and work at Walmart, I am about to sell my home at a huge loss, my kids can't afford to go to college. No one seems to remember that the poorest people in the United States are better off than most of the population of the world. This is a region where there is not even food growing anywhere right now.

Would any of this matter if you were literally STARVING?? DYING FROM NO FOOD!!! I bet not one person complaining about their problems has to even go one day without food. Ungrateful brats.

Let Oprah go spend her money. I wouldn't help an African with anything at this point. Please hurry up and starve so the U.N wont bother us anymore with this.

Attention AOL: Read these posts and realize that you are flogging a dead horse. WTF do we care about Somalia? We Americans need to take care of our own and quit trying to be the worlds police force and soup kitchen. Get this BS off the welcome page.

I think the grammatical and spelling errors are telling enough...but it seems you don't understand the fact that these organizations are asking for money from the world, as a community. Moreover, our country does have hungry people...but we also have way too many obese and overweight people. Starvation costs the world...including America, much more money than feeding people providing the technology and resources to subsistence farm. But I'm sure you wouldn't know these things...go watch a TEDtalk.

We are getting bailed out constantly by China and the European Union.

While I do feel sad that all these innocent children are dying, I can't believe nobody has suggested birth control. Instead of dropping food and other supplies that don't make it to the intended targets anyway, how about dropping condoms. Might help, can't hurt.

If it makes you feel good send some money to a org that actually can get some of your donations to where they are suppose to go.. But for all you church groups that think we need to bring more of these lazy people into the USA, and put them on the public dime DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.. Look at the pandora's box you opened in Minnesota with the mess you created.
Its mother natures way of thinning out the herd.

Dear Somalia,
As you may have heard, we, over here in the U.S. are having a bit of financial trouble. We are having to make tough decisions on what to and not to cut back on, so to will you. As much as we would like to do nothing more than give you free food, that train has left the station. We have noticed that your country's pirate business is/has been very successful in the ransom collection department. May I suggest you eat all the money gained from your endeavors. We would be more than happy to sell you as many kernels of corn as you need, we are having a sale on said kernels. Please send $100 million U.S. dollars per kernel of corn desired and expect your package to be delivered within a 5 year period, if at all. On behalf of the families of our military personnel you so proudly drug through your streets please go F*** yourselves.

For a change I do agree with you! Let me just add that the churches over here please stop asking our country to take their refugees..we are full up here in Minnesota. WE are broke...lastly, stop the baby factory over there. It is ridiculous to have babies when you cant feed yourself. Oh that's right I forgot women are merely vessels to deposit your crap in once they are age 12...maybe younger. Terrible religion you people support

My heart goes out to these young victims that are dieing of starvation, BUT what about the hunger in the United States? I would love to help all of those in the world that are in need of food but only after our needs in Amercia are taken care of first.
