Srebrenica Anniversary: One Mother's Catharsis As Son's Bones Are Identified

Serbia Mother

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina -- Three bones make Kada Hotic feel like a winner. It may not sound like much after nearly two decades of anguish, but to her they mean everything.

Two pelvic bones and a fragment of the lower jaw are what remain of Hotic's son Samir, who was killed by Serb forces in the killing fields of Srebrenica. They were dug up this year and identified – and now he will have a proper funeral along with 612 other newly identified massacre victims.

"They said I should not be looking for more," she said of the remains. "In a way I am happy, if this can be called happiness. But the alternative is not finding anything and that would have been worse."

There's something else that makes Hotic happy.

She came face to face last month with the man she blames for Samir's death: former Serb general Ratko Mladic, who was captured in May and is standing trial in The Hague, Netherlands on charges of masterminding Europe's worst massacre since World War II.

Last month, her eyes met Mladic's through the glass barrier that divided the courtroom from the audience chamber. She pointed at him, then at herself, slowly dragged a finger across her throat – and waved it Mladic.

"You killed my only son," she said the gestures meant. "Now you will pay for it."

Srebrenica – with its majority Muslim population – was a U.N.-protected area, besieged by Serb forces throughout the 1992-95 war for Serb domination in Bosnia.

But U.N. troops there offered no resistance when the Serbs overran the town on July 11, 1995. There, Serbs proceeded to round up Srebrenica's Muslims and killed more than 8,000 men and boys – the climax to the 1992-95 Bosnian war that claimed 100,000 lives. An international court later labeled the killings a genocide.

Hotic lost 29-year-old Samir, her husband Sead, two brothers, and many men in her wider family.

The killers plowed the bodies into hastily dug mass graves, which they later reopened to move the bodies to other sites in an attempt to hide the crime. They worked with bulldozers that ripped bodies apart.

Forensic experts have been painstakingly assembling complete skeletons and checking each bone against the DNA from survivors' blood samples.

Most of the time, however, families don't get anything near a full set of bones. They just bury body parts so they have a grave to visit at the Potocari memorial center near Srebrenica, built across the former U.N. base where Bosnian Muslims had sought shelter.

Hotic sat there paralyzed with fear 16 years ago, listening to the general issuing orders as U.N. peacekeepers stood idly by.

"He told them 'my Serb brothers, you have green light, use this opportunity, one like this will not be offered to you again," she remembers. Then she watched soldiers separating men from women – and taking the men away, it turned out, for execution.

The memorial was built in 2003 at the site where she last saw her son and husband. That year, Hotic buried her husband, whose remains had already been found.

Through the years, Hotic has found special ways to keeping her son alive. Samir was a smoker and blew rings "you could push a stick through."

After Srebrenica, she took up smoking and practicing smoke rings.

"If I would manage to make one, I imagined it was his."

Since 2003, she has been going to Potocari every year for the mass funerals, in which almost 4,000 victims have been laid to rest. As of Monday, one of the gravestones will read Samir Hotic.

And with closure near, she has quit smoking.

"The waiting was not in vain," she said. "I may be a victim, I lost my loved ones but I am the winner."

For those who would like to know something about Bosnia and Bosnians (history or present) its very easy to find out some more facts and info, through Internet or simply going to library - who need this biased chauvinistic rant from individual making comments like "Jesus was on Serbs side in Bosnia" ?! To simply put, its a hate-mongering !

Yeah, take internet as a reliable source to find the "truth" about Bosnia and Bosnians ...

The denial and whitewashing of Serb atrocities and criminal behavior in Bosnia (and Kosova) will be persistent phenomenon as we learned in case of Holocaust denial. Its a part of genocide it self, its a phase of this criminal/genocidal process. Fact that some people who never witnessed what happened in Bosnia taking part in this hideous act despite of mountain of evidence and proofs and fact that some of it even became a common knowledge, tells us more about them and their personalities and characters and nothing about impossible task of reducing the guilt and responsibility of Serbs.
The very last straw in this sick process is a cunning attempt to make Bosnians look like sort of aliens, foreign or Asiatic people in their own land as well as in Europe, and then try to depict Bosnian Muslims as radicals and prone to fundamentalism as any of those groups in the Middle East, Near East, North Africa, Arabia, etc.
These obnoxious attempts are in most of the cases manufactured within obscure marginal Serbian or pro-Serbian organization engaged in whitewashing and denial of the atrocities in Bosnia as well in revision of the historical facts which preceded these recent horrors. And, of course, we have these individual persons (Serbs hidden behind nicknames, pro-Serbian cause on the basis of religion, etc) who hanging on Internet around wide variety of websites and forums with same purpose of whitewashing and twisting the truth, smearing Bosnians and Bosnian Muslims.

Nice but not very convincing political speech.

You, and all other visitors of this site who are interested in Yugoslavian tragedy, should read the "First do no harm" by David N. Gibbs, associate professor of history and political science at the university of Arizona.

BTW, I never denied that atrocities were committed by criminals who were Serbs by ethnicity, and/or Christians by religion. However, there are plenty of evidence that criminals who were Bosnians (or Bosniaks !?) by ethnicity and Muslims by religion committed terrible crimes as well.

By the way, mr. Alija Iyetbegovic, at one time, use to declare himself as Serb by ethnicity. I don't see any problem with somebody being Serb and believing in Islam.

Jesus sides with the Serbs in this conflict!

Sorry to disappoint the radical Muslim fans on this site...

8,000, 8,000, 8,000...oh realy:

November 2003, the “total number of individuals located in the Srebrenica mass grave sites” was reported by ICTY Prosecution expert Dean Manning to have been 2,570 — and this number did not distinguish between civilians and armed combatants, or between those killed in battle and those executed.

The 8,000 story (fabrication) has been compromised, what else is the media reporting that is an out right lie?

What a LIE. Just unbelievable. It was a genocide commuted on 8,372+ civilians of which 6594 DNA identified and put to rest. ICTY.org Just for these comments I hope you suffer the same faith as those people did.

Your name is not very Muslim!

Genocide? Do you have evidence and a court of law to claim this?

Why are you willing to defend these radical Muslims? Do you live there?

The Serbs get a raw deal everytime. If you go by what the media says, I won't blame u if u think that Muslims are lambs who did not commit war crimes and mass murders in that civil war. It's very pathetic really.

Get off the innocent civilian cr/p!

How many civilians have died in Iraq and Afghanistan and by U.S. drones and the U.S. war machine?

Guess we do not want to bring that up do we!

And do not say you are not responsibe because you pay taxes that funds this war machine and are indirectly responsible for those killings!
10:32 AM on 07/11/2011
Some, probably, were innocent civilians. However, Srebrenica was a military post of Izetbegović led army and under the command of Naser Orić. It is close to impossible to determine who was a soldier and who was just a civilian in Srebrenica. Other then unfortunate children that were killed in this tragedy. The fact is that many Srebrenica man tried to escape and to fight their way out of Srebrenica.

I am convinced that unlawful killing and tragedy occurred in and around Srebrenica. Several Republic of Srpska generals and officers have been sentenced to long prison terms for that. Almost entire top political leadership, including mr. Karadžić are arested and senteced to long prison terms. Also, general Ratko Mladić was arrested and is in Hague now. I hope, that as the time goes on we will learn more facts about Srebrenica.

im not sure the serbs are all that bad.... thanks to sept 11 and the muslims cheering in the streets world wide
12:47 AM on 07/11/2011
A word Muslim describes a follower of Islam. A word Serb describes an ethnicity, or ethnics group. There are Serbs who are Muslims too.

For years, and even today, western press (see article above) used these two terms so as to portray one ethnic group fighting and committing genocide against one religious group. It is obvious that this kind of reporting has been happening for a specific reason and with specific agenda.

Facts on the ground are very different, however, facts are not easy to come by ...

By the way, former Bosnian president, Alija Iyetbegovic was declaring himself as a Serb of Islamic religion. The "ic" in his last name was indicative about his ethnicity.

It has become interchangable. I know a Polish Muslim. She is White and a Muslim but people seem to always describe people from the Maghreb, Middle East, certain parts of Africa and Asia as being Muslim. Islam is a religion not a race and not all people living in these countries are Muslim. Kinda funny thing is that this one guy tells me a friend of ours is Muslim just because he comes from Syria. This particular friend is a Syrian Christian and there are quite a few.

How could anyone can justify killing innocent unarmed civilians with religion or ethnicity? These victims were not soldiers, they were not even fighting, they were picked up from their homes...Have some compassion for God's sake...How are you different than people who were dancing on the streets when 9/11 happened and all those innocent people died? How are you any better than them? Shame on you ones on this board trying to justify this horrific massacre...
04:02 PM on 07/12/2011
You obviously do not know anything about this conflict, the Muslims wore civilian clothes and hid in villages, distinguishing who is an enemy and who was not was not very clear...

Most killed were enemy combatents or fighters but difficult to distinguish...

Be careful which side you choose, these Muslims were on the Nazi side during WWII...

I saw the independent reports, pictures and videos Oxi. 12 year old boys whose hands tied behind their hands shot to their death from behind were the combatants? Women who were raped? I mean really...Just say it that you hate Muslims and you are not bothered that civilians were killed...What are you trying to prove? All Muslims are so bad that they deserve to die like this, let's get rid of all of them??? What is your problem??? I am not going to change my mind over some stranger's unproven statements over my own country's journalists' independent reports...

So what are you trying to say? or are you selectively picking on one group cuz they happen to be Muslim
10:58 PM on 07/10/2011
What the UN ALLOWED to be done to 8,000 men and boys in Srebrenica will FOREVER bring shame upon the UN, making clear to the world how little the UN values male lives.
09:01 AM on 07/11/2011
Where's your evidence of 8,000?

Please do not say the media from NATO nations, I mean an independent source!

Every one of those who killed thousands of muslims in Bosnian war should be brought to justice, including their protectors who gave these fugitive war criminal shelter. Sad to see that people justify these killings just because they hate their fellow humans based on race and religion. Not sure how they are different from Nazis.

but ignore the colonization, murders and chruch bombings of the muslims........no thanks

Interesting that you bring up nazis. The nazis had a whole regiment made up of Bosnian Muslims. Muslims in this region were pro hitler during WW2.
