Baby Sea Turtles Released Into The Ocean (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/11/11 11:23 PM ET Updated: 09/10/11 06:12 AM ET

It's baby sea turtle galore! In this video, a set of sea turtles are released into the ocean. Although not many details are provided, the YouTube contributor, MrsCritterSitter, writes that this takes place in Cabo San Lucas, and says, "They were adorable! But the awesome part was the crowds reaction when a wave finally came up and got them..."

While the circumstances of this specific situation are unclear, different organizations in Cabo San Lucas and around the world work to protect sea turtles and then release them back into the wild. According to Terra Daily, the non-profit organization ASUPMATOMA in Cabo San Lucas has saved thousand of baby sea turtles from coastal development, pollution, and illegal hunting and fishing practices by protecting the nests and then releasing the baby sea turtles into the sea.

Not all sea turtles are as fortunate. Last month, a green sea turtle was found dead in Australia after swallowing 317 pieces of plastic. The Associated Press reports that the turtle had consumed fishing line, packing tape, lollipop sticks, and plastic bags, which ultimately led the animal to slowly starve to death. Sadly, many other sea turtles suffer from ingesting plastic each year.

An analysis in January by the National Wildlife Federation, the Sea Turtle Conservancy and the Florida Wildlife Federation found that more sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico were killed or injured in the months following the BP oil spill than in any other similar period in the last two decades. Hopefully these babies won't see a similar fate.

many of these turtles won't make it due to the fish predators they have to face now.

I'm a little late responding to this email. Someone recently sent me an email and the reference was "Why Sea Turtles are Becoming Extinct". It showed photos of a beach (I'm not sure where it was) where numerous sea turtles had gone to bury their eggs. The photos showed a large group of people coming and going with large sacks. They would cut open the turtle and take their eggs (also digging up eggs that had been buried) leaving the turtles to rot on the beach. It made me sick.

Ordinarily natural instinct would draw Sea Turtle hatchlings to the ocean waters, attracted by the reflecting light of the moon and stars. But now, there is a high Sea Turtle mortality rate because light pollution from glare of streetlights and highrises overwhelmingly competes with the natural light turtles evolved with, and draws them away from the safety of the ocean. Hatchlings are vulnerable and have only a short amount of time to reach the safety of the water. In a confused circular pattern hatchlings will often leave tracks toward the bright street or condo lights, then again toward the ocean, until many die from exposure or attacked as prey.
It is an interesting fact that sea turtles will return to the same spot they were hatched 30 years later to lay their own eggs. How do they do that without a GPS?! This is why habitat must be preserved. We can do our part by reducing light pollution ensuring that we only use light as needed with no light trespasses out of our own property lines, lights are pointed down and are not allowed to drift up or sideways, consider using motion detectors, avoid high blue spectrum lighting. See International Dark-Sky Association website for lots of tips. KUDOs! to the people who helped in the turtle release. Joyful sight!

It is sad that these magnificant creatures and all the rest of the animals are being killed because humans are too lazy to throw their trash in a trash bag! GROW UP PEOPLE and learn to pick up after yourselves!

Baby Sea Turtles Released Into The Ocean.....

It's great that the people stayed there protecting them from sea birds that would have eaten the little guys.... their facing a large ocean to survive in.

We have done this several times in Puerto Vallarta, Mex. There was a Turtle Sancutary we stumbled on and we talked to the caretarker and he invited us to release the baby turtles. They did it at night after all the birds were gone. What a treat!. We also were able to assist them in one of the resorts. As a Scuba diver I can't think of a better dive when you encounter the beautiful sea turtles. Save the Turtles.
