MLB Upset With Derek Jeter For Skipping 2011 All Star Game

MLB Upset With Jeter For Skipping All Star Game

UPDATE: MLB commissioner Bud Selig defended Derek Jeter's decision on Tuesday.

"I know why Derek Jeter is not here," he said. "I respect that and I must tell you that I think I would have made the same decision."

EARLIER: A day before hitting his 3000th career hit, it was announced that New York Yankees star Derek Jeter will not go to the 2011 All-Star Game. According to Foxsports.com, Jeter bowed out because of "emotional and physical exhaustion" from his pursuit of 3,000 hits.

Major League Baseball is apparently not happy about Jeter's decision.

New York Daily News reporter Mark Feinsand wrote on Tuesday that one MLB official said that "Jeter has done everything right during his whole career, he was wrong on this one."

The official also said that the game could have been "a celebration of his 3,000th hit" and that "he didn't have to play."

"I don't think it's my place to speak for others," St. Louis slugger Lance Berkman said. "But for me, personally, if you get selected to be here you have an obligation. You gotta be here. If you can go, you gotta go."

New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran said that he believes "if you have no injuries, you should be here."
