A family tragedy has prompted Houston residents to open up their hearts to help three children orphaned in a West Texas car accident.

The children's parents, Joshua and Robin Berry, were killed when an SUV veered into their lane and crashed head-on into their van, the Huffington Post confirmed with family friend Allen Deutsch.

Nine-year-old Peter Berry, and 8-year-old Aaron Berry were airlifted from Covenant Health System's Women's and Children's Hospital in Lubbock to Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital last Wednesday night after sustaining serious spinal cord injuries. They are both paralyzed below the waist.

Six-year-old Willa was less seriously injured and is recovering at a family friend's home.

The SUV passenger, 28-year-old Colleen Doyle, also died. The driver, 31-year-old Michael Scott Doyle, was taken to University Medical Center in Lubbock in critical condition, according to the Associated Press. A hospital spokesperson told the Huffington Post that Doyle is not currently registered there. The Jewish Herald-Voice reports that Hansen Mortuaries, which arranged Colleen Doyle funeral, confirmed that Michael Scott Doyle is alive.

The Doyle's 1-year-old daughter was in the car as well but was unharmed, authorities say.

Attempts were made by the Huffington Post to reach the Doyle family via telephone and social media. Crystal Doyle, Michael Scott Doyle's sister, was distraught and declined to comment.

Everyone in both families was wearing a seatbelt, according to the police report. But it simply wasn't enough.

"It was late at night, and that stretch of highway is a horrible area where people have tragic accidents and fatalities," Deutsch told the Huffington Post. "It's a two-lane highway with no lights. It's very dangerous."

The Berry kids will live with their aunt and uncle, Matt and Simone Berry.

"There's a lot of uncertainty," Matt Berry told the Huffington Post. "The dynamic for everybody has changed so it's really scary. I've got to be the cheerleader for a long time. It's gonna be a long road to recovery in many ways, but I have a big bright light that I'm seeing at the end of the tunnel and I'm focused on that to make sure these guys have a really good life."

Berry also said he takes comfort in the children's strength.

"You get inspiration from them," he said. "These kids smile when somebody asks to take their picture. Can you imagine being in these kids' shoes? It's pretty incredible how they're dealing with it."

Deutsch told the Huffington Post he's been amazed by the generous support for the Berrys in the wake of the tragedy. More than $13,000 was raised in a bake sale for the children who, Deutsch said, will have special needs for the rest of their lives.

"The outpouring of emotions from the community has really helped," Deutsch said. "It's an amazing thing."

To make a contribution to the Berrys that will help fund all of the children's ongoing needs, including medical rehabilitation, physical therapy, psychological support and education, visit theberrychildren.org

What about that Doyle baby, losing her mother and possible a father. What horror. Just donated to the Berry fund.

Thanks for correcting the inaccurate headline a few seconds after I sent my comments about West Texas.

Tragic accident. Hope the children will recover.
On an editorial note, doesn't HuffPost have editors who know something about news, fact-checking and accuracy? The Berry family is not from West Texas, as stated in the headline. They are from Houston, which is on the Texas Gulf Coast and -- in this big state -- Houston's a long way from West Texas where the accident occurred.

there's no law against being annoying.

While I enjoy most of Huffington Post, it has some of the worst headline writers on the Internet working for it. They use the same trite phrases ("HUGE news!") and misuse words like "negligent" and "neglectful". My 13-year-old granddaughter could do better than some of these individuals.

Why is automobile transportation so dangerous? That's the question we need to be asking ourselves. There's no excuse not to tackle that problem. Let's use some ingenuity and imagination, and create vehicles and roads that aren't deadly. Every time I get in a car, I feel that my life is basically in the hands of hundreds of people I've never met.

Sounds like a tort suit to me. Highways are are too often only re-engineered after so many fatalities.

Will absolutely send a donation. Seeing the utter sadness in the boys' eyes in their hospital beds was too much to sit here and do nothing...the least I can so is send a check

A parent of a 1 yr old falls asleep at the wheel or veers into the other lane for whatever reason and two young fathers are dead. A young mother is dead. Another mother is fighting for her life. A 1 yr old grows up w/out a father and possibly mother if she dies or is found criminally liable(This is Texas), a 6 yr old girl loses both parents and has both of her brothers paralyzed below the waste. Two young boys forever paralyzed and w/out their parents.

This is one of those stories that you read and can't help but carry w/you. So sad. I wish I had money to give to them.

This is just heartbreaking :( I hate that things like this just happen with no cause - no rhyme or reason - no fault. It's almost easier when someone is at fault because it gives us a direction to point the anger and resentment. But in this case, it's just a freak accident.
03:14 AM on 07/29/2011
No fault? You are joking! This article say nothing about a freak accident -- but rather -- that another vehicle VEERED INTO this family's lane and hit them head-on.
(I believe it was later revealed the driver was drunk -- but no matter -- they still veered into this family's lane. when that happens -- there is usually a REASON and it IS someone's fault -- in this case -- the careless driver from the other vehicle -- drunk, texting, talking on the cellie, reaching for something, falling asleep, looking at a map, drifting off and simply not paying attention, speeding -- it could be ANYTHING -- and it is STILL the other driver's fault!) Nothing freakish about it!
Many prayers for this family and that the person who caused it is handled according to our laws (and thank goodness for them!)

I am very sad for this family. It's very sad for the children and thank God the aunt and uncle are there for them- and the community is behind them. Hopefully everyone tries to help out with what they can, because I know the health bills will be staggering, and money problems should be the least of their worries in such a time. I wonder if the parents had life insurance?
08:59 PM on 07/15/2011
First thing Monday morning, Mr. Berry, call the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis by the University of Miami School of Medicine (the Buoniconti Fund). They are doing cutting edge work on curing or aleviating paralysis from trauma. Talk to them right away. They can help you and the boys on a dozen different levels RIGHT NOW. Please do not hesitate!
07:27 PM on 07/17/2011
Uh no. The only thing that will help is rehab. There are no treatments for spinal cord injury.
01:30 PM on 07/19/2011
Uh yeah. Stem cell research and many other therapy possibilites could dramaticaly help these boys.

Who are you to contradict any avenue that may help. PT perhaps OR just an annoying cynic?

good idea, Mitchellesq.

Also - There are robotic mechanisms to assist people to walk - while the body is healing and the brain is being re-programmed.

New breakthrough medicine is helping people w motor control disabilities - to walk.

There is great success w children who have cerebral palsy - (an operating room mistake at birth) - wherein children who are never expected to walk EVER are walking.

I have seen it - happen.
