Home Run Derby 2011: Kid Makes Outstanding Diving Catch (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/12/11 02:05 AM ET Updated: 09/10/11 06:12 AM ET

Despite Robinson Cano setting a new final-round record to become the 2011 Home Run Derby champion, this kid may have made the highlight of the night. In the very first round, the eventual champ popped up for his final out. Two kids charged after the fly ball and one of them made an amazing diving catch. Even the ESPN announcers were impressed as the kid jumped to his feet and celebrated with the other kids on the field.

I could do that, it's not that hard to catch a fly ball. Catching grounders is harder

If it was my son, I would have been proud. He was all over the place making catches. The child showed great aptitude without an ipod, tv, cell phone, video games, etc.! Children today need fresh air - even though this was in a dome!!! Great job and keep up the good work!

As I watched a little of this I was thinking what happens if this gets ugly and one of these kids gets hit in the head by a ball that they didn't see or misjudged, as they ran around just trying to get around and through each other. I just got this uneasy feeling something could happen and if it did, what would the parents of that child and baseball feel like if it did. The law suit and loss of child would be something you wouldn't forget for a long time. Why take the chance?

as a baseball Dad, this is the type of opportunity to experience a big stage event that you want for your child. Plus, you dont intend on sending your kid out if they cannot take care of themselves, but yes it's also a concern that too many kids running down the same ball might get hurt. But then that is a concern whenever you let your child go out for a sport, but it doesnt change the fact that it's a better way to spend their time then sitting in front of a TV watching the Home Run Derby.

Hey...you're not splitting the "atom" here. You're catching a friggin baseball. Is this really news worthy? You can see catches like this in just about every baseball game you watch! Get over it!

Who wizzed in your corn flakes this morning? It was a beautiful and difficult diving catch by a youngster, and on national TV no less. Let the kid shine a bit.

For "knotheads" truthinperson, beasteben and independent you might want to read further down the list. The MAJORITY of comments agree with my statements. Obviously, you don't play baseball or watch it much. Otherwise, you would realize this is no uncommon feat regardless of age or league! Now go back to your room and play with your "dolls"!

I thought baseball was supposed to be such a difficult sport, but you see this and fans making "amazing" catches all the time....with their bare hands no less.

Catching a baseball really isn't that hard, its hitting one and throwing one over the plate consistently that makes it difficult

isn't that what's supposed to happen in baseball?
01:32 PM on 07/12/2011
Yes. I played center and left field in Pony ball (12-14 years old) and would make catches like that all the time. Nothing special except that is was televised on TV and in a major league stadium (the grass is perfectly manicured so you can make cool slides like that in the out field).

what a shame that you could do this at 12-14 and never made anything more of yourself in the sport. go spew your BS somewhere else.

How was that hateful? Just being tired of them playing the race card is hateful, I don't think so.

Great grab. The kids in Arizona have a big advantage in developing baseball skillsets. They get to play all year because of the beautiful weather. There is a tremendous baseball attitude in Arizona with the development leagues for kids.
