Lori Niell, Former Colorado Springs Nurse, Claims Psychic Abilities Led To Persecution

Psychic

Lori Niell, a former occupational nurse in Colorado Springs, says she unfairly lost her job because of her psychic abilities. Hospital and city officials, however, argue that Niell accessed 2,500 records of Memorial Hospital patients without cause. Niell has resigned from the position she held for 8 years.

Niell contends that her abilities made her supervisors uncomfortable and that the accusations of misusing medical information are false. While she admits to accessing the database to look up a phone number she lost, Niell says there's a different reason for her leaving the position.

She told the Colorado Springs Gazette the city made her case public because officials know she has spoken to a deceased city employee from beyond the grave and are concerned about what she knows. "It's a power play," she said. "They are showing me how strong they are. I know for a fact that they are pushing me because there is a dead city employee with important information who I have access to."

Hospital spokesman Brian Newsome said Niell's employment was through the city, not the hospital. As such, she had no medical need to access the hospital's records, especially when she wasn't at work.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) prohibits the unauthorized access and/or disclosure of any individually identifiable health information. Criminal penalties can range from $100 to in excess of $50,000 per violation for HIPAA infractions.

As of July 12, Niell has not been charged or arrested.

I have heard of people getting fired for accessing medical records without permission, but never arrested. Is this a practice in some states?

Lori, if you are truly psychic, you would already know that experts can see just *exactly* what you accessed in the computer. So, sorry, fail.

I'm surprised she didn't see it coming...

Fired a city employee for a crime she has not been charged with? Hmmmm? I say give her a chance. Let's see what information needs to be disclosed. The FBI uses psychics routinely with success.

"Niell accessed 2,500 records of Memorial Hospital patients without cause."

She's not psychic--she's a snoop! Obviously she unethically looked at patients files and then claimed she was psychic.

Well, if that is the truth, then shame on her. And that would be 2,500 counts of HIPPA violations. Ouch!

You know, I have a belief in these abilities but can we all just agree that she seems just a wee bit off? A conspiracy theorist with "special connections". I try to avoid them when I can.

If she's a Psychic why did she need to look up a "lost" phone number?

I mean couldn't she have just seen it or read some ones mind to get it?

And if it doesn't work that way what the heck good is it?

Why aren't all Psychics rich from winning Lotteries?

What an odd story! What did she do with the information she accessed? What did the dead employee have to say? Details, people, details.

I'm guessing gathering data to "prove" how psychic she is.

A good psychic would've seen this coming.

Maybe she did? No charges to date. Pretty hard to justify firing a city employee for a crime she has not been charged with.
