LOS ANGELES -- A homeowner on Malibu's "millionaires row" seems to have found the price of thwarting public access to the beach coveted by the rich and famous.

In exchange for a promise of $250,000 and lawyer's fees, a nonprofit called Access for All, which works to ensure public paths to the beach are opened, agreed to extinguish an access point to one of the most exclusive parts of the California coast.

A judge, however, last week upheld action by the state to open a pathway past Lisette Ackerberg's home to the beach. The pathway was a condition of a development permit Ackerberg got in the 1980s.

Steve Hoye, who heads Access for All and Ackerberg's attorneys did not immediately return calls for comment.

Residents have long battled efforts to open pathways past their beachfront homes.
