McConnell Debt Ceiling Strategy: 'I Refuse To Help Obama Reelection'

Mitch Mcconnell Debt Deal

First Posted: 07/13/11 01:35 PM ET Updated: 09/12/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), under siege from conservatives over his opt-out proposal for the debt ceiling debate, defended the idea in crassly political terms during an interview on Wednesday morning.

The Kentucky Republican, appearing on Laura Ingraham's program, repeatedly pointed to the political toll that congressional Republicans endured during the mid-'90s when they squared off against then-President Bill Clinton over government spending.

"[W]e knew shutting down the government in 1995 was not going to work for us. It helped Bill Clinton get reelected. I refuse to help Barack Obama get reelected by marching Republicans into a position where we have co-ownership of a bad economy," McConnell said. "It didn't work in 1995. What will happen is the administration will send out notices to 80 million Social Security recipients and to military families and they will all start attacking members of Congress. That is not a useful place to take us. And the president will have the bully pulpit to blame Republicans for all this disruption."

"If we go into default he will say Republicans are making the economy worse," he concluded. "And all of a sudden we have co-ownership of a bad economy. That is a very bad position going into an election. My first choice was to do something important for the country. But my second obligation is to my party and my conference to prevent them from being sucked into a horrible position politically that would allow the president, probably, to get reelected because we didn't handle this difficult situation correctly."

McConnell's penchant for speaking in the sheerest of political terms is something of a defining character trait. During one of the first interviews he gave after the 2010 elections he called the defeat of Obama's reelection campaign a top party priority.

More than just being blunt, this tendency has also put the brakes to the legislative process. In the immediate aftermath of his proposal to essentially give President Obama the authority to raise the debt ceiling while only demanding that he suggest (not pass) commensurate spending cuts, McConnell was greeted with skepticism. The most common retort -- from Democratic lawmakers and operatives alike -- was to consider the idea a "trap" to undermine the president.

There is some irony to McConnell evoking the legacy of the government shutdown debates of the mid-1990s in defense of his proposal. Then-Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) famously lost the battle of public opinion against President Clinton during that showdown. Now a presidential candidate, Gingrich was one of the first to criticize McConnell for blinking during the debt ceiling debate.

Will Democrats and Republicans strike a deal to avert default?

Mitch and the republicans already own about 90 percent of the bad economy = they had the congress and white house from 2000-2006 and Bush did not veto ONE spending bill

I, in Senator McConnell's place, step forward and support President Obama's re-election.

Can anyone seriously doubt the need to keep the Senate Democratic? Imagine what a Republican Senate would do. Ow! Imagine what a Republican Senate would do to a President Obama Supreme Court nominee? Double ow! The Senate must be kept Democratic!

I, in Senator McConnell's place, vow here and now to work for the President's re-election.

How can he possibly be so stupid that he can't understand that in blocking Obama in every possible way in order to prevent his reelection that he is actually making it more likely that Obama will be reelected? We elected both of these men to run the country and that's what we are paying them to do. If McConnell is preventing that from happening, then it isn't Obama that we need to get rid of.

Is he really admitting he is giving the executive branch the duties of the legislative branch, the financial control of the debt he helped create and takes zero responsibility for? Not to help America but to solely make Obama fail? Are we living in a novel? He can't do that, can he - it's UnConstitutional.

"I refuse to help Barack Obama get reelected"
Now, I see a political carton here. A hallway in a burning hotel with Mitch holding the fire hose and waving off the panicked residents - saying that!

Want to defeat McConnell in the next election?

Put a Tea Party candidate on the ballot to draw 5% of the vote, and McConnell loses. The Republicans roped this thing, now let's see if they can ride it.

I have to agree with his choice not to back Obama. But who to replace him with is the question? Any good third party candidates out there?

How about me? Oh, heck, I'd have to erase my facebook and youtube accounts and ditch my hard drive for starters. I'm not going to cut it with the middle American white supremacist Christian Evangelical Mormon Polygamy-loving Corporate Rich White Man Lobby.

From the article---. I refuse to help Barack Obama get reelected by marching Republicans into a position where we have co-ownership of a bad economy," McConnell said (END)

So, he has just confessed to two facts.

1---The Republican positioning on the debt has been simply and only that. Political positioning. Or posturing, if you prefer. It has nothing to do with working on the problems of the country. Which, by further extrapolation, leaves Republicans in the category of traitors. Or, at least, certainly not patriot. For the definition of a patriot is: One who loves his country and supports its authority and interests. Putting political posturing above the needs of the country is not supporting the interests of the country.

2---McConnell's previously stated goal has not changed. Which was, and is, to make Obama a one termer. Which means, that anything he says or does should be viewed in that light, and not accepted as a legitimate effort to resolve a problem.

McConnell needs to realize that the choice of who the voters select on election day is NOT his dictatorial choice. Last I heard, this was still a free system. My vote is not determined by a power-hungry professional politician. I have viewed the (in-)actions by McDonnell as being skewed since he first stated his "goal". His comments and/or (in-)actions have zero legitimacy to me.

An atypical bit of honesty from a Republican...they are not EVER going to accept a duly elected Democrat as legitimate, even if doing so is necessary for the survival of the country as we knew it.

This fishface reptile of a sad excuse for an Amer politician, McConnell should be used as a horse pulling the Pres' friends as they go about theit adult business.
When he comes home and yels to his wife "let's get it on", his wife should head for the hills to escape.

Does he know that he is talking, and not just thinking those words?
Thanks for perfectly spelling out just how vindictive the GOP is, Mr. McConnell- having your temper tantrums about Obama winning the election in 2008 is far more important to your party than getting this nation back on track after the economic disaster created by Bush and Cheney.
