Obama Walks Out Of Tense Debt Ceiling Meeting: Reports

Obama Debt Ceiling Meeting

First Posted: 07/13/11 08:28 PM ET Updated: 09/12/11 06:12 AM ET

President Barack Obama walked out of a contentious meeting in ongoing talks to raise the nation's debt limit on Wednesday, an aide tells Reuters.

Politico reports that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said the president stormed out of the negotiating session with top congressional lawmakers.

The Hill reports that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi disputed Cantor's account of what occurred at the end of the meeting.

"Cantor's account of tonight's meeting is completely overblown," a House Democratic aide told HuffPost. "For someone who knows how to walk out of a meeting, you'd think he['d] know it when he saw it. Cantor rudely interrupted the President three times to advocate for short-term debt ceiling increases while the President was wrapping the meeting. This is just more juvenile behavior from him and Boehner needs to rein him in, and let the grown-ups get to work."

HuffPost's Jen Bendery reported earlier in the day:

The White House on Wednesday closed the door a little more on the debt proposal being floated by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), a measure already under siege by conservatives.

"This is not a preferred option," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said of McConnell's proposal in his daily briefing.

McConnell's proposal for avoiding debt default -- to transfer full power to raise the debt ceiling to the White House for the remainder of Obama's current term, cutting Congress out of the process -- does nothing to address deficit reduction, Carney said. And Obama is set on making sizable cuts.

According to Reuters, House Speaker John Boehner regarded proposed budget cuts put forth by the White House as "gimmicks and accounting tricks" when lawmakers convened on Wednesday.

Politico reports that Cantor addressed the situation that unfolded following the meeting. "I know why he lost his temper," he said of the president in addressing the matter on Capitol Hill. "He's frustrated. We're all frustrated."

HuffPost's Sam Stein reports:

By the end of Wednesday, the market seemed fully aware of the debt ceiling debate. U.S. stock-index futures fell after Moody's Investors Services announced that it may cut America's AAA credit rating. An Associated Press report earlier on Wednesday that Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) had called the likelihood of raising the debt ceiling a "crapshoot" if a compromise between Democrats and Republicans wasn't reached caused a dive in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The AP later updated the story to clarify that the speaker had said what would happen if a compromise isn't reached is a "crapshoot."

The AP reports on the state of discussions to lift the debt limit:

What's left is an assortment of contingencies and increasingly sour squabbling between intraparty factions deeply split over what to do as an Aug. 2 deadline ticks closer. No proposal has the critical mass to raise the limit and avoid default. The lack of clarity about just who is leading -- and to where -- has taken its toll in goodwill and trust.

That has liberated all sides from any urge to follow their leaders, freeing them to propose and oppose whatever they want on an issue that could frame the nation's economic fate and send ripples around the world for years.

A GOP aide told Reuters after Wednesday's meeting that the president would not renegotiate his bottom line as to what he would compromise in the ongoing discussions. According to the aide Obama said, "I have reached the point where I say enough." He reportedly added, "Would Ronald Reagan be sitting here? I've reached my limit. This may bring my presidency down, but I will not yield on this."

The AP reports that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke issued a warning to lawmakers on Wednesday that failing to strike a deal and allowing the country to default on its debt would send "shock waves through the entire financial system."

Thank you, Mr. President, for standing firm as we're asking you to do against these juvenile delinquent TeaBaggers who have bullied their way to running the Republican party. There is no way to bargain or deal with uneducated bullies.

To Haddit:

Love your passion, though you and I clearly disagree on issues. But I will say this in a spirit of friendship.

I was insulted by you calling me "Amos" in a post, and making the matter worse by adding the "Andrew" tag as well. While you may not have liked being called "Haddy,"I am failing to see how that goofy moniker stacks up to what you attempted to do.

We are better than that, and I hope to continue to debate with you. But this must be said. One of the reasons I come to HP to share my thoughts is that we here are not like the other sites that allow "isms" to flow freely. we can dislike, we can goof, we can call each other out. But a line must be drawn at that kind of attack.

I hope to chat with you again about how bad you think Obama is. Peace.

Worse: Obama isn't even their boss. They're there as a courtesy. So it's more a host storming out of his own dinner party.

"There is no crying in business talk!!" I feel like screaming to Obama.
What was that happened? I do not know but you do not pull a "homey the clown" bit.
Hi has a great responsibility, no doubt but he is also the president of the US, he should act a the leader of the greatest country of the world not as, again, "homey the clown"
Little me knew it then (when he got elected) and there is no doubt in my mind now. I believe his "playtime" is up and now it is time to bring a seasoned politician into the picture.
There is nothing wrong on admitting the job was not what he thought it would be, he can apologiza and go back to Illinois.

Protocol when meeting with the President of the United States is simple: when the President stands the meeting is adjourned - not before. Your article says he "walked out" implying that he was angry. Not exactly what happened. Let's not get into hypothetical journalism please. Thank you

President Obama is threatening to withhold or delay Social Security checks if a deal is not done quickly. I do not think it fair that he should be allowed to threaten my life while I can be imprisoned for threatening his.

That's some really *interesting* logic. Except Obama doesn't send out the checks personally, and he's not threatening to withhold anything either. He said if the debt ceiling isn't raised, the government can't spend money.. following a rational, logical train of thought, if the government can't spend money, they can't send you a check.

Does it make sense now, or should I find a carrot to explain it to you?

mtntexas, when you don't speak the truth about what happened then it means that you are looking to pass the untrue negatives.to imfluence the voters with your own "biased misinformation. It might work for the people who only want to hear the lies but hopefully yjr truth will prevail.

Poor little Can'ter just can't get his way. Wahhhhhh Wahhhhhh Wahhhhhh, the president told me to go to the corner for my time out and I'm so mad.

What a pathetic wimp and how frigging funny. He's short US bonds so after he ruins the US credit and makes a couple million, he'll settle down and come back to the table.

It's funny that anyone in congress can use insider information and it's perfectly legal? If we used the same information they have to make a penny, it would be a felony, but for congress, perfectly legal.

That's just enough out of you Baggers, since you don't know enough about anything to be commenting. A President can call off a meeting or interview or press conference whenever he decides is the right time. He does not need to ask to be excused. The President, when he decides an appearance is over, must leave before the audience and news people leave. Canter was wrong to leave, President Obama was not. Learn the presidential protocaol or keep quiet. We don't want your repeated FOX or Limbaugh lies.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that the main goals and objectives should be to put the American workers back to work, recreating our middle class tax base, paying into the systems as SSI and paying taxes to balance and support the cost of keeping our tax supported necessary Public workers?
Whom are the people/global companies benefiting from the trade deficit of $578 Billion dollars per year? The Republicans are trying to make the spending cuts without getting the people put back to work when there has to be a critical "timing" in not over reacting, making the 2007 recession fall into another great depression.

How many of President Obama's opponents wish that not anybody would remember the policies of the Cheney/ Bush eight years? Obama's opponents appear to have trouble admitting the reality of the conditions that were present before President Obama took office. The proof is out there already that there are people who do not want Obama and the Democrats to correct the crisis problems of this Republic, letting the US to fall into another "great depression" and are using every negative tactic against the recovery of the 2007 deep recession which the President tries
All the President has to do is reveal the facts of the "time line" and not falsify the facts or try to rewrite the history as the Republicans wish they could.
It seems as if many of the people do not like it because President Obama shows too much confidence and is not supposed to act "uppity" as if he is President of the United States Of America.

Oh that cocky little Cantor, I would walk out on him also. Cantor is intent on bringing all meetings to a no solutions end and try to destroy our President. no bipartisanship with that guy, so our President did the right the thing, walking out before little cocky Cantor got to. John Boehner has already found out Cantor can't be trusted.

That's really showing off your leadership skills, Obama, or lack thereoff, right? Obama is a joke. He's clueless and way over his head. Can't wait until next November when he gets kicked out of office, and not a moment too soon.

icethebest, it seems as if you are in the wishful thinking "mode"? I believe Cantor has a new understanding of how "clueless" President Obama is. We will leave Obama's reelection up to the "smart" voters who are not biased and want to get our people working for the good of this Republic and who can compare what Obama has done as compared to what the Republicans and his other opponents would have done,to to cause a depression while Obama has prevented the 2007 deep recession from turning into another great depression.
