Rory Donoho And Shane Donoho, Deer Poachers Will Spend Next Four Seasons In Jail

EUGENE, Ore. -- An Oregon man and his son who pleaded guilty to poaching will spend the next four deer seasons in jail and have been stripped of their hunting privileges for life.

Investigators said the family hunted illegally for generations and all but wiped out the deer population in part of a wildlife area.

Under a plea deal, they'll report to prison on Oct. 1 – the first day of deer season – for 90-day terms each of the next four years.

Shane Donoho, 37, admitted killing more than 300 deer in the past five years, prosecutor Jay Hall said. In most cases, Oregon hunters are limited to one deer per season.

He and his 60-year-old father, Rory, obtained other people's tags so they could appear legitimate if a game official caught them with a poached animal, Hall said. They pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges of racketeering, identity theft and poaching, the Eugene Register-Guard reported. The charges could have gotten them more than three years in prison.

The Donohos also forfeited 19 rifles and 1,600 pounds of frozen game. The meat will be given to zoos and wildlife rehabilitation centers.

"Shane Donoho said the poaching goes back as far as he can remember, that he was taught by his father, Rory, who was taught by (Shane's) grandfather," Hall said in court.

Shane Donoho's attorney, John Haapala, said the Donohos didn't try to sell the meat but rather intended to eat it or share it with friends.

Wildlife officers had long been "perplexed and disgusted" by the lack of deer in two drainage basins of the McKenzie Wildlife Management District near Vida, said State Police wildlife trooper Marc Boyd. In nearby, similar areas, he said, wildlife surveys would turn up "several hundred deer a night."

Hall said the poachers were tripped up when an associate, Miguel Kennedy, used the identity of a former girlfriend to get tags.

Her puzzled response to a routine research request touched off an investigation, he said. Kennedy was sentenced in June to eight months in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges. Six others face misdemeanor charges in the case.

When police served a search warrant at Rory Donoho's home, a grandchild in footed pajamas offered to show officers how to hunt a deer, Hall said.

"He said, `You've got to hold your spotlight in your left hand and kind of rest your rifle on top of it,'" Hall recounted. The prosecutor said he asked the boy why he needed a spotlight to hunt deer, and the child replied: "Because it's dark outside, and they'll stop and look at you."

Hunting after dark is illegal.

'Shane Donoho's attorney, John Haapala, said the Donohos didn't try to sell the meat but rather intended to eat it or share it with friends.'

And they were caught well after deer season with 1600 lbs of venison in their possession. Just *when* were they going to share it? Stupid, stupid people.

I have 48 depredation tags from DNR this year for a 15,000 + acre operation.

They're rats with antlers around here.

thats what happens when hunters kill off the top predators - the deer population boom has a huge effect on saplings and the whole shape of the eco system. its one of the biggest impacts humans have had on nature. http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-07-loss-large-predators-disrupting-multiple.html

There were less whitetail deer in America when the Pilgrims landed.
Whitetail deer don't like forests.
They're populations have exploded since then due to the explosion of modern agricultural fields and practices.

The only predator capable of keeping populations in check with the abundance of food now supplied to them is people.

We are the reason deer populations have exploded.
And no amount of wolves, mountain lions, bears or coyotes will ever put a dent in deer populations.
Because if large numbers of these predators are reintroduced children in outlying suburbs will be a far easier meal than a skittish whitetail deer.

The truth is that in two decades hunters as an age group are getting older.
And fewer people hunt.
The American people would rather play a hunting video game in air conditioning than get sweaty by walking into the great outdoors and partaking in the cycle of life.

Got to love those redneck baggers--they pass the stupid gene right on down to their kids. I'd have given them one year for each deer they took illegally, seems fair enough.

looks like they are lying about number of deer too. "more than 300 " could be thousands...

"Wildlife officers had long been "perplexed and disgusted" by the lack of deer in two drainage basins of the McKenzie Wildlife Management District near Vida, said State Police wildlife trooper Marc Boyd. In nearby, similar areas, he said, wildlife surveys would turn up "several hundred deer a night."

If local wildlife officers were a bit less "perplexed and disgusted" and a bit more curious and inquisitive maybe this particular family tradition could have been terminated a little sooner...

Funding for law enforcement is often cut before other programs. Besides, billionaires would otherwise go hungry and have to poach wallets again.

WHAT?

No, dear, it's usually the _last_ to be cut, along with firefighters.

Funding for just about everything in this part of Oregon has been cut over the past few years. Libraries have been closed, for God's sake. Thank goodness the rich have been trickling down all over us.

Hunting at night. How sporting. As if the poaching itself wasn't bad enough.

Being a ton of meat ahead of needs is way beyond just needing to feed your family.

Then work to bring back a viable population of what ever their natural predators are there.

yes, because wolves and mountain lions are such good animals to have in populated areas.

Here the deer are starving and have a wasting disease due to overpopulation. The only predator otherwise are hunters and the grill of my car. Send them to the East Coast instead of jail.

And who's going to inspect it and make sure it is not diseased? Imagine the lawsuits then.

Zoos seem like a good enough use.

The States inspect all animals shot under depredation programs that are donated to State orphanages, hospitals and jails. The meat goes to these institutions and has for multiple decades.
