'The X Factor' Promo Ad Rips On 'American Idol,' Shows Attitude (VIDEO)

Cowell Abdul X Factor

Simon Cowell is back. And gosh, does he want you to know it.

The famed producer and original "American Idol" judge, who left the show after the 2009-2010 season, is returning to TV in a big way with his own singing talent competition, the title-challenging British import, "The X Factor." Looking to make a major splash and set itself apart from every other talent competition, Cowell and company have laid out a $5 million prize for the winner -- and made clear that they've got an edge the revamped "Idol," starring Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler -- sorely lacks.

In this first TV spot, Cowell suffers a fever dream of an "Idol" parody, wearing a pink sweater and, alongside fellow former "Idol" judge-turned-"X Factor" star Paula Abdul, saying inconceivably nice things to inconceivably bad audition singers (although, it maybe wasn't quite the same stretch for Abdul). Co-judges LA Reid and Nicole Scherzinger -- she the product of Cowell's mishandling of British star Cheryl Cole's brief time with the show -- join in on the sweet compliments, all done in a hotel suite that looks suspiciously like the "Idol" audition room.

Finally, Cowell wakes up in a sweat, realizing it was all a dream before donning a much more characteristic designer suit, sauntering out of aircrafts like a secret agent and ripping people like he was born to do.

Cowell spoke with The Huffington Post during the casting process of his new show, seemingly taking a small shot at his replacements on "Idol" while talking about what he was looking for in "X Factor" judges.

"I was never interested in signing celebrities just for the sake of it, because I think that in the case of someone like LA Reid, even though a lot of people won't know who he is, he is actually a fascinating guy and I think a lot of people will like the fact that they're discovering him on the show," he said.

That assertion may be challenged by the fact that the audience booed Reid at initial auditions, but perhaps that's the edge that Cowell is trying to tease in the ad.

It should be noted that both "Idol" and "X Factor" will be on FOX, so it'd be interesting to know whether the network approves of the trashing, or is excited by the potential rivalry. They probably have mixed feelings on Cowell, who left "Idol" despite a reported $130 million offer from Rupert Murdoch.

Of course, Murdoch now has other things to worry about.

yay! i can't wait for the return of Simon and paula !!!! enough of all the syruppy drool of a.i. it's better to let someone know they have no talent than to build them on false hope when God and everyone knows there is no chance of them making it past the front door! i stopped watching A.I. after the first week it was unbelievable! J.lo for being a "singer" was too , too fake and didn't know how to pick talent!

What a horrible commercial -- who wrote this dreck?

No clear narrative, no plot-line, totally incoherent. Was it spoof, parody, a send-up? Was the little girl's singing suppose to be good, bad, indifferent? Was she an actor or an actual contestant?

And who were the two new judges and why weren't they given more air-time? And if you're not going to have three judges, you need five -- not four -- because with four you don't have a tie-breaker.

A lot of money went into this commercial but not a nickel's worth of thought.

The two words that will get me to watch this show are Paula and Nicole.

Love that exotic look.

For us men whose women make us watch these shows to make up for making us making them watch sports, I'm glad Simon and Paula are back in a new show. They almost make these ridiculous talent contests bearable. I do very much enjoy the audition phase however, I would watch that on my own.

Welcome back guys. Idol has been sorely lacking lately. I need something new now, sadly.

Glee was terrific as it did break all the barriers on what was great to watch and hear. They just lost me once the couples I though were supposed to be in love started sleeping with other people. Not what I would want in a relationship - so the show lost its hold over me.

That is a great spot. Hilarious.
Simon and I live at opposite ends of the spectrum.... so, the X factor will have to become a hit without my help.... but I'm sure it will.
I will stick to my turf... the whole sweetness and light thing.... to each his own!
