Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Under FBI Investigation Over Alleged 9/11 Victims Hacking Scandal

TOM HAYS   07/14/11 07:21 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK — The FBI has begun a preliminary inquiry based on concerns in Congress over a report that media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. sought to hack into the phones of Sept. 11 victims, a law enforcement official said Thursday.

The decision to step in was made after U.S. Rep. Peter King and several other members of Congress wrote to FBI Director Robert Mueller demanding an investigation, said the official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

The official stressed that the review was in its infancy but declined to discuss the scope of it or say what steps had been taken. The FBI routinely makes preliminary inquiries into issues raised by lawmakers and others to determine whether a full-blown investigation is needed.

News Corp., based in New York, has been in crisis mode because of a scandal that sank its U.K. newspaper the News of the World.

A rival newspaper reported last week that the News of the World had hacked into the phone of U.K. teenage murder victim Milly Dowler in 2002 and may have impeded a police investigation into her disappearance. More possible victims soon emerged: other child murder victims, 2005 London bombing victims, the families of dead soldiers and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The suggestion that Sept. 11 victims also may have been were targeted surfaced Monday in the Mirror, a British competitor of News Corp.'s The Sun. The newspaper quoted an anonymous source as saying an unidentified American investigator had rejected approaches from unidentified journalists who showed a particular interest in British victims.

British Prime Minister David Cameron vowed Wednesday that the claim would be investigated there.

U.S. Department of Justice spokeswoman Laura Sweeney said Thursday that the department "does not comment specifically on investigations, though anytime we see evidence of wrongdoing, we take appropriate action."

The FBI and the U.S. attorney's office in New York declined to comment.

King's letter had called for "an immediate investigation," saying it was an "urgent matter."

King, a Republican, said Thursday afternoon he had not officially been contacted by the FBI and said he wanted to reserve comment until he hears from the agency.

"If they do, I'd be gratified," he said in a brief telephone interview with the AP.

News Corp. executives are at risk of being found criminally or civilly liable for phone hacking that originated in Britain under the 1977 Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and they are at risk under federal wire-tapping and state privacy laws if it is found that U.S. citizens such as Sept. 11 victims were targeted, experts say.

But the experts doubt that such actions could jeopardize News Corp.'s U.S. newspaper holdings such as The Wall Street Journal or result in the revocation of the license it needs to own Fox TV stations in America.

"I think we're a long way from that," said Philip Raible, a partner at New York law firm Rayner Rowe LLP, which specializes in corporate law affecting media companies.

Murdoch said Thursday his media company will recover from any damage wrought by the phone-hacking and police bribery allegations.

Several relatives of Sept. 11 victims said they had not been contacted by the FBI about the inquiry. Some asked what the motivation for any hacking could have been.

Little new information would have come to light from hearing victims' last phone calls, they said.

"It doesn't make sense," said Rosemary Cain, of Massapequa, N.Y., whose firefighter son George Cain was killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. "We're all average people, we've all suffered a loss, we're all trying to put one foot in front of the other. Why they would think there was anything interesting in hacking into anyone's phone, I don't know."

Michael Burke, of the Bronx, whose brother William F. Burke Jr. was a fire department captain, said he was "befuddled" by the report.

"If it did happen it's bizarre and depraved and they should investigate it thoroughly," he said.

On Thursday, Murdoch caved in to pressure from Britain's Parliament as he and his son James first refused, then agreed, to appear next week before lawmakers investigating phone hacking and bribery by employees of their newspaper empire.

Murdoch began his media career in Australia in 1952 after inheriting The News newspaper after the death of his father, and he has built News Corp. into one of the world's biggest media groups. Assets include Fox News, the 20th Century Fox movie studio, The Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and three newspapers in Britain – down from four with the death of the News of the World.

Also Thursday, Scotland Yard said it had made its seventh arrest related to the inquiry into phone hacking at the now-defunct tabloid, whose closure was a doomed effort to keep alive a bid for the highly profitable network British Sky Broadcasting. Police didn't disclose the name of the arrested man.

Question has to be raised as to how close was the news corp to the White House during and after 9/11 and was it possible to listen into phone messages that could incriminate the Bush administration in any way to the Saudi's or the planing of the attack? Why would there even be any need to hack the phones other then a possible leak from the Government or the knowledge of the attacks from any surviving firefighters?

I'm curious what the actual accusation is. How would they know? Who did they actually attempt to hack and when?

Hell, I semi-hacked the cell phone of a woman who's boyfriend broke into my store, then gave the info to the cops who did nothing. The funny thing is that the detective said "how did you get this data?" "Don't ask". Then, and I'm not kidding, he offered me a job as a detective, and all I had to do was go through the detective course work at the police academy. I thought about it for a brief second, then laughed and said "no thanks, I couldn't put up with the culture of do-nothing here". I was flattered, yet not amused. I thought "hey, I could be one of those Law & Order guys, if only they existed in real life".

It's a culture born from the top down. He shouldn't be taking exclusive responsibility, nor should his 'underlings' have to fall on their swords to protect him and his top cronies. All who are responsible need to be held accountable.

We need to have a close look at the rest of the "executive body" as well, including his son(s) who are well-infused with dad's approach to the "news" business… no repeats, please.

It's high time the 'news corp.' international monopoly was broken up, Teddy Roosevelt style.

This is EXACTLY why we don't (*ahem* aren't supposed to *cough*) allow foreign ownership of our TV & News organizations. Their agenda is not aligned with the betterment of our national interests.

Now Fox "news" is out in force providing the "fair and balanced" version of front-line defense of the indefensible. How can anyone possibly give them a shred of credibility (in any case, but especially in this one)? They're protecting their BOSS!

Conflict of interest? Do you "want to believe"?

Hoping this is the end of the Fox "news" as we know it. Bring back responsible reporting and journalism. It's desperately needed! Not nearly as "entertaining", but an informed republic is a secure republic….

I bet that's not all they are guilty of. Look at how Murdoch and his cronies are working hard to ruin democracy everywhere, in favor of an aristocracy and feudalism.

They also want girls and women to suffer from the rule of the men over them. That's obvious by how many of the people they promote want to take away all the rights and support of girls and women.

Murdoch must have decided to cut his ties with the UK.

Seriously, p*$$ing off the government and the country is not something he should have done right now if he planned to stay. Does he think no one will pass this along to Parliament?

What is the moral reasoning or justification for tapping the phones of 9-11 victims???

I'm I the only one wondering why Rupert Murdoch scandal has not gotten an effective initial traction in much of the news media? I'm even referring to HuffPost here.

There is no doubt that Murdoch's media has changed the political dialogue in the U.S., to a considerable negative effect.

Undeniably, this is copycat version of what he has been practicing in the U.K.

It is mind boggling to see a reputable political party lining up and associatinl basis. And traction they did get. I'm talking about Fox Network, birthers and the Glen Becks.

Fox Network's tactic was a campaign of selective outrage, and an attempt of attrition. (You know who their targets are already).

And I sit and wait for reputable media like HuffPost to pick up this earth shattering story, but all I see is near silence.

Rupert Murdoch and some or at least one of his media networks in the U.S., have used freedom of speech to evil proportions, and I wouldn't care if the sky falls on them, metaphorically speaking.

To say Rupert Murdoch has unleashed evil, is an understatement.

uuuhhhh.....ask his NYC/PD connection Rudy Guiliani, who gets paid via the Fox Connection.

Don't you get it? The Palin's, and Camerons, and Huckabees, and Arab princes, are all in Ruperts 'stable'.

Murdoch is at the top of the media food chain; he buys and sells, makes and breaks, runs the political media wing of the GOP, and has a stable of stars on the payroll.

Is he really sorry? Sure...just like Glenn Beck is sorry! Onward to bigger and bolder adventures in skullduggery. They're "The Murdochs", from Down Under...and it ain't over 'til they turn down his American Express card.

I agree with you.

Could it be fair to suggest that Glen Beck's incendiary and divisive comments are a version from Murdock organization playbook?

I guess it's time the D. N. C. asks the F.B.I. to look into Rupert Murdoch and News Corporation's business practices in the U.S., and by extension Fox News. Perhaps to find out what, or, if anything was orchestrated to undermine the President of The United States through birthergate.

For people like Mike Huckabee there, who wants to go to church anyway. Huckabee reminds me of Jeremiah Wright. If listening to Pastor Huckabee's sermons is a way to heaven, I'll take a pass.

And for Rudy Guiliani, 9-11 made him a national icon, beyond that, there is no serious political relevance to him than he thinks he has.

By now Princess Palin should know, her horse is dead, and that she should dismount.

He took US citizenship so that he could own a broadcasting station. Non citizens can't do that. It's money, not allegiance. It's likely that the same business practices that were prevelant in the UK are also carried out here.
05:06 PM on 07/16/2011
Murdoch should be stripped of his US citizenship and deported. His policies have headed us towards the loss of our democracy, the ruin of our economy, and the demise of good journalism and independence within the mainstream media. Now his corrupt empire has been caught up in a well deserved dose of bad karma. Maybe he will be transmigrated into a maggot in his next life, since he feeds like a corruption-loving worm in this one.
