'Glee' Spinoff? Lea Michele, Chris Colfer Getting New York Spinoff: Report

Glee Cast

Just as "Glee" fans began to contemplate a life without Rachel Berry and Kurt Hummel, they may not end up having to say goodbye after all.

Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that stars Lea Michele (Rachel), Chris Colfer (Kurt) and Corey Monteith (Finn) would be graduating from the hit musical dramedy at the end of the coming third season. And while that has some fans bummed, a new report reveals that creator Ryan Murphy has bigger plans for the first two stars.

RumorFix.com says that Michele and Colfer will star in a spinoff show that places their characters in New York, a thread that began pulling near the end of last season. In New York for Nationals, their characters snuck onto the stage of "Wicked" and sang one of the songs. The characters decided that, following their graduation, they'd move out to the city.

While not announcing the news himself, Murphy said in his interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he planned on focusing on that storyline during the upcoming third season.

“I’m much more interested in Lea’s character -- not so much on her relationship with Finn, but more on what her dreams are beyond high school and how she plans on getting them," he said.

Back in June, Murphy got the ball rolling on breaking the news of the upcoming graduation, telling Ryan Seacrest, "The thing that I wanted to do and the cast wanted to do, we didn't want to have a show where they were in high school for 8 years. We really wanted it to be true to that experience. We thought it would be really cool if we were true to the timeline."

As for Monteith, he's looking at other opportunities.

"I'm thrilled with how the show's done and with the opportunities it's provided me, but at the same time I'm excited about doing other things," he told Entertainment Weekly at the end of June.

Earlier on Thursday, Colfer was nominated for an Emmy, while Michele was not. The show itself was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Ok, I could see the spinoff, but it can't be like Glee with four or six songs an episode. That just wouldn't make sense if they go to New York to get a Broadway Career.

Guess Murphy will devise some sort of conclusion to Rachel and Finn's relationship before Glee's third season ends. Kind of sad since i was hoping in vain that this High School couple could be one of those rare ones that actually stay together after graduation.

It wouldn't make sense if they go to New York to get a Broadway Career...but it makes sense singing every day during High School? If they can sing in the hallways of school, they can sing i New York.

The thing that is interesting about this spinoff is it sounds like it might actually have a story too it. Something Glee has been lacking since Season 1 ended.

In the school you can chalk it up to them being part of the Glee Club and having an assignment from their teacher that forces them to practice some sort of song. In New York waht will be their excuse to spontaneously burst into song? Are they going to be auditioning for a Broadway show on every episode? And they can't be singing covers of pop tunes or 80's music all the time, Broadway doesn't roll that way.

Ryan Murphy. How many darned times and on how many different media-outlets do I need to tell you this!? TAKE A PAGE FROM THE BOOK OF WHEDON! Buffy Summers graduated from high school. And the world did not end, the show did not fail miserably. Why? Because, what comes after high school? Can you tell me? Think hard. COLLEGE. You can ask 100 Buffy fans and 99 will tell you they preferred seeing Buffy in college, being an adult and more. FYI, as you've demonstrated in your own show - Glee clubs are not just made up of high school students. People of all ages compete.

But, please, by all means. You seem to know what's best for the show you created. You seem to believe you'll continue to have as much success with new cast members as you have had with the ones you have. Because, you know, viewer opinion and fandoms mean nothing, right?

As a Buffy fan, Season 4 when Buffy goes to college was easily one of the weakest seasons of the entire series. There is a reason they quickly dropped the college setting and just threw Buffy into the real world right away.

I agree with your point, though, but I wonder if just moving the show to a college setting wouldn't just become tired and boring. I was a MASSIVE fan of Glee when it first started and now I can't even watch it because it is so tired and just a parody of itself now. I think a move to New York could be the breath of fresh air the show needs.

The problem is they are already too late. There is already a musical-type show ready for the fall about someone trying to make it on Broadway. And it looks pretty darn good.

You, my friend, would be that one out of a hundred who wouldn't say Buffy moving on from high school was a good thing! Although I do see your point. I suppose college was only really for most of season four and that was it, although Tara and Willow maintained classes longer than Buffy did. Poor Buff!

It could become tiresome and boring, just as the show has. I see it having advantages and disadvantages. You could do even more young adult issues, but then that becomes tedious in itself and you start to move away from the target audience of teenagers. It would really be a double-edged sword.

As is, Glee won't survive beyond season three, so everyone better start figuring out what it is they want to do. Well, perhaps it will, but it will never be as good as it was! :)

Don't forget that in NY when Rachel announced her move to NY Kurt said that he and AND his boyfriend were thinking the same so this could mean Darren Criss will also go on.

So basically they are going to be the next "Saved by the Bell, The College Years".

Love the idea! Kind of a "That Girl" theme ( if you are old enough for the reference) is what i'm thinking would be a great format.

Did you notice that is how Rachel Berry opened the NY Episode? With the hat and the spin!

Murphy should proceed with caution...Rachel is quickly losing her charm.

That charm lasted one season, in my opionion. I just find her whiney and annoying now - not multi-dimensional.

One of the reasons I'll miss Colfer is his relationship with his father. That awkward relationship was very touching to see develop.

Awkward and yet very loving on both parts. Two of the best developed characters in the show.

all i have to say is this: do not put it on fox. i swear, they already have a pretty good sitcom lineup following glee in raising hope and new girl which seems promising. put it on FX or something and i would not be so angry. but do not put it on fox. it would outshine hope and new girl.

Only if they write in a recurring role for Jonathan Groff as Jesse St James. The only male who can really sing other than mathew Morrison, who otherwise bores me to death Just as Corey Monteith bores me.

Lea Michele is incredibly talented but I can't yet imagine her in too much else other than Broadway.

But I do not really want to any of them again if the writing is as disappointing as last season.

Very interestingly written version of events. Until it was out on the internet, none of the three actors had any idea that they were being let go at the end of the upcoming season. Murphy (in another di.ck move that he is getting known for more and more) told The Hollywood Reporter and never bothered to mention it to Monteith, Colfer or Michele. They found out online and Murphy's response is something akin to: Well they know they their characters were sophomores when we started the show so..." This is exactly NOT the way to run a show and how not to treat the talent. He should have talked to each of them first, before be spoke about it to the press. Major jerk.

These two could get really annoying quickly. Lea/Rachel, has real talent. I do like Kurt too, but I think his storyline is fairly limited without the full ensemble around him. I just LOVED the Streisand/Garland duet they did....fantastic.
