Happy birthday to Rembrant van Rijn, who was born today, the 15th of July in 1606. A prominent painter and etcher of the Dutch Golden Age, Rembrant is perhaps best known for his painting, "The Night Watch."
Rembrandt revitalized portraiture creating lively and dynamic compositions in his works. Though he was very successful as a young portrait artist, the later years of his life were marked by financial hardships and personal losses. Rembrandt's knowledge of classical iconography aided him in the portrayal of many biblical scenes, particularly "The Return of the Prodigal Son," shown below along with several other works by the master artist.
