Heat Wave In Central U.S. Shows No Signs Of Ending

By MURRAY EVANS   07/17/11 10:50 PM ET   AP

OKLAHOMA CITY -- As temperatures climbed into the 90s Sunday in Steele, N.D., a small window air conditioner in Paul and Betty Smokov's ranch home just couldn't keep up.

"It's 82 in the house," Betty Smokov said. "The heat is really oppressive and sticky."

That observation could be made anywhere in the central U.S. Heat advisories and warnings were in place in 17 states, from Texas to Michigan, as temperatures and humidity combined to make being outside uncomfortable for millions. One National Weather Service forecaster called the heat wave "unrelenting" and said sweaty residents shouldn't expect any relief soon: A so-called "heat dome" over the region isn't moving much.

"The trend is not our friend right now," said Daryl Williams, a forecaster in Norman.

In Oklahoma City, forecasters expected another day of 100-degree heat Sunday, which would be the 27th day this year the city has reached 100 or above. The city is on pace to break its record for such days – 50 set in 1980 – with triple-digit heat possible through September.

It's even worse in western Oklahoma, where temperatures at 110 or above have been common in recent weeks. In Enid, asphalt at a major intersection along U.S. Highway 412 buckled Saturday night from the intense heat.

Justin Tinder of Weatherford and his family visited the Oklahoma City Zoo on Sunday, arriving at 9 a.m.

"By noon, we were headed out," Tinder said. "It was too hot for us to stand much longer. We decided to check it in and go find some air conditioning."

In Chicago, city officials said a half-dozen cooling centers would remain open this week, as temperatures as high as 105 were forecast in Illinois.

Cooling centers also were open in Detroit to help residents who don't have air conditioning at home. Others were heading toward water for relief, including 65-year-old welder Marcellus Washington, who wore a floppy cloth fishing hat and sunglasses as he walked through a park on the Detroit River that marks the border with Canada.

"A day like this, you can't beat it," Washington said. "It's a heavenly day. It's God's weather."

Others who had to be outside in the heat took precautions. North Dakota National Guard Capt. Dan Murphy said several hundred soldiers deployed for flood-fighting efforts in the Dakotas were required to take mandatory rest breaks in the shade.

"It's hot in those vests and uniforms," Murphy said. "These are soldiers. They can't just strip down to T-shirts and shorts."

Officials at the Cornhusker State Games, an amateur sports festival in Nebraska, had crews bring extra water and ice for participants.

"It takes a physical toll on anyone out there," said the event's executive director, Dave Minarik.

Dwight Anderson, the owner of an Omaha, Neb., amusement park, had two tons of ice cubes dumped in the park's swimming pools Friday night to lower the water temperature from 88 degrees to 82. Anderson said he plans to dump more ice into the Fun Plex pools on Monday night or Tuesday morning.

The Schwan's USA Cup youth soccer tournament in Blaine, Minn., suspended play for a time Sunday because of heat indexes that soared to 110 degrees. Tournament spokesman Barclay Kruse said organizers wanted to avoid any heat-related health issues before they developed.

Police said heat may have played a role in the death of a 55-year-old man at a homeless camp in Springfield, Mo., on Saturday. Police found him in a small tent after others at the camp raised alarm. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

The heat also is adversely affecting wildlife. The Texas AgriLife Extension Service said last week that pregnant does are having difficulty carrying fawns to term and other fawns are being born prematurely.

Texas A&M University researchers determined the period from February to June was the driest such period on record in Texas, with a statewide average of 4.26 inches of rain. The next driest February-to-June stretch was in 1917, with a 6.45-inch rain average.

The Smokovs in North Dakota monitored their cattle for heat symptoms Sunday as temperatures neared triple digits.

"The cattle seem to be OK and we haven't lost any from the heat," Betty Smokov said. "We're making sure they got water and in this heat, that's all you can do."

Of all the subjects that I've commented on this shows that weather is of the most interest next to Casey Anthony.
To put weather, Milutin Milankovic, climatologists etc. all into prespective I liken it to an old adage: Weather, you can talk about it. But you can do nothing about it. Or we a pimple on the back side of an elephant. Or a book entitled Hot Topic, Cold Science.
Take a stand. It won't make a tinkers difference. We will destroy ourselves and damage the earth in the process. But the earth will heal and go on for several more billion years still changing as its orbit changes and chemistry inside changes. My advice to point your nose into the wind and move on.

"Weather, you can talk about it. But you can do nothing about it"

First, climate is not weather- repeat until you understand that very basic fact of climate science.

In any event gotta love substance and fact-free misleading assertions like that one that with respect to climate that go against overwhelming scientific evidence. Or not.

It quite simply does not matter whether you "believe" in climate change or not. We're living in the warmest decade on record and each year is hotter than the last. If you live in the south and you vote republican, God has reserved a special place in hell for you right here on this earth.

No, but they don't deny climate change and some are actually taking steps to reduce the human impact.

Here is a link to a paper written by a climate scientist. http://seaice.apl.washington.edu/Papers/JonesEtal99-SAT150.pdf
Look a few pages in at the graphs. The temp is up and down, but the TREND is upward. A lot of deniers are confusing maximum temperature with mean and median temperature. You can have a high max temperature but still a low mean temperature because the other temps are counteracting it. As the lower temperatures start to rise, the max temperature might not be as high but the mean is rising. The median temperature is the most common occuring temperature value, which appears to be rising as well.

Of course the trend is upward. Thats because they cant sell as many carbon credits if the trend is downward. And the liberal Wall Street traders who deal in the carbon credits and the cap and trade credits wont be able to make their billions and billions if the masses figure out that man-made global warming/climate change is a myth. Don't you think with billions on the line that maybe, just maybe, they might be willing to lie about the temperatures that they are recording.
10:37 PM on 07/18/2011
Perhaps I should clarify...the trend has been upward since the turn of the century. That has got to be a record for the longest running con game ever...talk about a slow con. Maybe next time, instead of knee jerking, try reading the link and as Quatl said..."Open your mind..." I just don't get not "believing" science when it doesn't fit your political world view. I suppose I should say I don't believe that the Earth moves around the Sun... the Earth is the center of the universe and the stars are just points in the shell that is sky. If we all thought like climate change deniers then we would all still be in the dark ages...

Overpopulation, greed, stupid people. Darwinian enforcers aren't yet legal. But being from the far north, I love the heat. It doesn't bother me personally like it does many others.

But there's no global warming going on-- no--couldn't POSSIBLY be. Republican ignorance and denial of basic planetary science may end up killing us all. Thanks a bunch, baggers!
06:35 PM on 07/18/2011
hey Einstein, relax. If your that deranged that you think only certain people are responsible for the weather , think again. I would go with the planet is overpopulated by a billion or so people.

We're all responsible for the weather, as we all exist in this civilization and take part in its economy. But only some of us completely ignore the consequences of that civilization and oppose the policies that might help us. Hence, "Thanks a bunch, baggers!"

Have you ever thought that maybe your liberal leaders are LYING about this supposed climate change. Al Gore will soon be a billionaire because you silly libs believe him and are buying his carbon credits so that you dont feel guilty driving your suv. I'm sure he doesnt feel guilty at all living in his Huge mansion (of which he has several), or riding in his private jet, or floating on his massive yacht. You keep buying what he is selling, and he will keep laughing at YOU all the way to the bank. HINT- he is using you like a blow-up doll. Ha Ha Ha

Your fundamental error is in assuming the motivations of environmentalists and climate scientists are the same as the Kochs, or that figureheads like Gore have anything to do with the science.

People here are whining and crying about the heat while in iraq and afghanistan troops are batteling 120+ temps in body armor and 70 lbs of equiptment, that sounds miserable, in 1970 i battled the temps in vietnam i thought it was miserable and all most of us wore were either fatigue or t shirts and a boonie hat no helmet,,, it's hot here but it could be much worse

That doesn't make it any cooler here or mitigate the problems that farmers are having.

We should bring our troops home.
07:18 PM on 07/18/2011
Dude, those of us whom already served our time know. Thats what you sign up for when you join. All those whom serve, deserve respect, remember they are trained to handle it. I was in the 10th Mountain during the early 90's. Carrying a 152 lb ruck into Haiti was nothing and its always hot there. 90 year olds, small children, lazy people, unhealthy people cannot deal with it physically. I don't like lazy people, but its just nice to think of them. Their whines are legitimate to them. Let your government sort them out. Next it will be a section 9, subsidized ac for the poor.

The weather is always changeing, its called 'Normal" and I can't believe no one remembers the History lessons from the fourth grade! The earth changes daily and has been from the moment it formed into a planet. I can remember growing up in the 60's and one winter a bilzzard covered our whole house! It was awesome. the changes will continue until the sun novas and our little blue planet breaks off into outer space and helps develop a new planet. As for me, I live in a state not touched by the heat or floods or tornados, just cool calm and comfortable. Time to start moving North guys!
05:54 PM on 07/18/2011
"The weather is always changing"

Of course it is. Do you really think this is something that scientists haven't considered?

Google this: Weather is not climate.

----------------------------

"Time to start moving North guys!"

There are nearly 7 billion people living on this planet with over 80% of them living in warmer areas. When they move North, there's a good chance they will come knocking on your door.

I MOVED FROM GEORGIA IN 1986 TO SEATTLE, THANK GOD: COULD NOT TAKE ANOTHER SUMMER OF HEAT RISEING TO THE POINT I COULD NOT SEE DOWN TOWN ATLANTA. I MADE A CHOICE TO FIND A BETTER CLIMATE, I ALSO FOUND MY SELF BECOMEING MORE LIBERAL...MAYBE THE HEAT EFFECTS THE HUMAN BRAIN, I WOULD THINK THE GAMMA RAYS THAT CAN PENETRATE CEMENT, COULD PASS THROUGH THE CRANIAL STRUCTURE, AND MAKE ME A REPUBLICAN...THE GOOD NEWS IS THE PLACES THAT DENY GLOBAL WARMING (YOU KNOW THE 125 COUNTRIES AND THE WORLDS LEADING CLIMATE SCIENTIST FROM NASSA, TO AUSTRALIA TO MIT, AND THE UK) THE GUYS THAT HAVE NO POLITICAL AGENDA JUST SCIENTIST, AND KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING... THE GOOD NEWS IS I LIVE IN A PLACE WHERE WE ACTUALLY CAN SEE OUR CITY, 49 DEGREES LAST NIGHT AND MAYBE 72 TODAY, YESTERDAY 67 -----THE OTHER GOOD NEWS IS THE HEAT IS EFFECTING THE DUMEST PEOPLE IN AMERICA. MY OLE NATIVE RIGHT WING GEORGIA AND ESPECIALLY TEXAS WHERE PEOPLE USE THER HEADS ONLY TO WEAR BIG SILLY HATS.
