Apple Q3 2011 Earnings: 'Our Best Quarter Ever'

By PETER SVENSSON   07/19/11 08:46 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- The iPhone is conquering Asia, the home of its strongest competitors. Sales there nearly quadrupled from a year ago and helped Apple Inc. trump analyst expectations for yet another quarter.

Apple also said iPad sales worldwide nearly doubled from a quarter ago, a sign that it has left the worst of its supply problems behind.

Apple's stock surged nearly 5 percent after the results came out.

Net income in the fiscal third quarter, which ended in June, was $7.31 billion, or $7.79 per share. That's more than double the $3.25 billion, or $3.51 per share, a year ago.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting earnings of $5.82 per share.

Revenue was $28.6 billion, up 82 percent from $15.7 billion a year ago. Analysts were expecting $24.8 billion.

The results were lifted by the sale of 20.3 million iPhones, millions more than analysts had expected. The phone's popularity in Asia, particularly in China, is helping. So is the fact that Apple keeps expanding the number of carriers that sell the phone. It was the first full quarter in which the phone was sold by Verizon Wireless, the largest carrier in the U.S. Before, only AT&T sold the phone in the U.S.

Apple usually has the year's new iPhone model out by early July. That hasn't happened this year, and analysts expect the new model to come in September instead. Apple executives didn't provide any specifics on a call with analysts.

Executives also resisted questions on whether Apple will produce a cheaper iPhone to compete against phones powered by Google Inc.'s Android software. Asian competitors like Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and HTC Corp. are selling tens of millions of Android phones every quarter at prices that undercut the iPhone.

"We will only make products that we are proud of, that are the best in the world. And if we can do that, and the price is lower, then we are great with that," Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook told analysts on the call.

IPad sales came in at 9.25 million units, also above analyst expectations. Last quarter, the company was struggling to make enough of the new iPad 2. Apple has sold nearly 29 million iPads since they first went on sale in April 2010.

In other product categories, trends were less impressive. Sales of Mac computers were 3.95 million, up 14 percent from a year ago. That's the lowest quarterly growth rate in two years.

Cook said some people were probably buying iPads instead of Macs in the quarter, but he said more people were buying iPads over Windows PCs. He said he was pleased with 14 percent growth compared with overall PC market growth of 2.6 percent, as measured by research firm IDC.

Some buyers may also have been holding off while waiting for Lion, the new version of the Mac OS X operating system. Apple had said it would go on sale this month, and Apple confirmed on the call that it will go on sale Wednesday. Lion will cost $29.99 and mimics some of the features of the iPhone and iPad interface.

IPod sales were down 20 percent at 7.5 million, as the music and video players continue to lose out to iPhones and iPads. It was the fastest quarterly decline yet.

Cook is running day-to-day operations while CEO Steve Jobs is on indefinite medical leave. The quarter was the first full one since Jobs went on leave in January. Jobs remains involved in major decisions, including announcements of new products. Analysts don't expect Jobs' leave to affect the company much in the short term. All the company's major products have still been shepherded by Jobs.

Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said he expects earnings of $5.50 per share and revenue of $25 billion in the quarter that just started. Both figures point to a decline from the third quarter. However, the company usually lowballs its financial forecasts, and analysts are unlikely to take the forecast seriously.

Apple's stock surged $18, or 4.8 percent, to $394.85 in extended trading after the company announced results late Tuesday. In the regular session, it hit a 52-week high of $378.65, before closing at $376.85, up nearly 1 percent.

Remember back in March when that JMP "analyst" Alex Guana downgraded AAPL? Wonder if he got a job yet.

Hey anti-Apple peeps. You realize of course that the most efficient and entertaining way to belittle Apple is to use an Apple product as your communication tool. I mean you don't want to waste your time with poor UI on a poorly executed copycat, right?

The weirdest thing about the comments to this news story is all the people bashing Apple for making its products in Asia. Um, check your HTC Droid or Galaxy handset, dudes and dudettes -- do you think they were made in Milwaukee or something?

They must not be paying "their fair share" of taxes. Where are all of the big oil opponenets? I don't hear any outcries about being in bed with the Republicans or corporate kickbacks. Oh wait, it's our guy...........never mind.

Get ready to share the wealth Mr. Jobs!!! If your party that you voted for gets their way. LOL. I know you do charities and that is great, but this time you will be forced. Just let me know when you are ready to write our checks.

Of course they're making tons of money. Apple charges double the price of a PC for a computer with half the ram, half the hard drive space and outdated processors. Then, Apple's customers are happy to shell out more money to buy additional RAM etc. to get their computers up to speed. That Apple koolaid must be some powerful stuff!

That is because that koolaid is made with Splenda and not sugar so their though process are messed up.

Hey, sans government intervention, it's Apple's right to charge what they want. As much as I have issues with their ideology and the clear, preferential treatment this administration has with the organization, I have to defend their right to operate their business. The market will determine the value of their products, and it looks like it has. I just wish liberals would approach all companies with the same acceptance.

He didn't say anything about if it is their right or not. He simply was just comparing their ripoff prices on hardware that can be found in pc's. They do have the right. I also have the right not giving them my money. Capitalism is a great thing.

Not really. I know a lot of people who complain about not having health insurance and supports Obama's health care plan but have 50 inch t.v. in their home. Some people's priorities are not right.

ipv4, he said he created the overseas companies after searching all over the country for an area that had enough power on their electric grid to support his plants. Maybe we should reign in the Sierra Club and others greenies who have been standing in the way of the building of new power plants with affordable technology (wind and solar are not affordable yet). This is just another example of how the politically correct liberal agenda has killed jobs.

It's great that they're making all of this money for China, their avaricious executives and shareholders. But for regular working Americans, not a dime. I do not believe that they make even one product here. Maybe one, the prototype of each product.

How about letting the American worker in on this by making their stuff here. There are a lot of out-of-work Americans, you know.

Walmart regularly gets lambasted for stuffing their stores with CCC, (cheap Chinese crap). What are the Apple stores doing that's different?
09:26 AM on 07/20/2011
These companies are global they could not give a crap about the american worker. All they care is there ability to optimize maximum profit by utilizing slave labor.
09:43 AM on 07/20/2011
And we're not smart enough to refuse to buy their CCC or their iTunes that work only on their players when there are perfectly fine compatible formats out that that will work on everybody's music players. Would anyone sell gas that worked only in one kind of car?

DISCLIMER: Yes I know that the sophisticated user can get the over-priced stuff that you buy on iTunes to work on other makers' players. But ask yourself, could you ma figure it out?

Tell that to the workers in China and India who have risen out of poverty through these new jobs. The poor in the United States live like royalty compared to most other countries in the world. You should travel. Even nearby Haiti (even before the earthquake), Dominica Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, all of Central and South America, all of Africa, Asia. You'd be appalled at how poor even the upper middle class are.

It is different. Most of the phones ARE from foreign countries. Samsung, LG, Sony, Blackberry etc. NONE of these are American companies in the first place. However, Apple is a American company. They should be ashamed of themselves. I have no problem with people buying foreign products that is actually made by a foreign company. I do have a problem with an American company letting foreign workers make their products. I try my best not to by Made In China. But it isnt always so easy.

Hey, Research the Facts, Revenue was $28.6 billion, up 82 percent from $15.7 billion a year ago. Analysts were expecting $24.8 billion.
Have you ever been in business yourself. It's not about how many you sell, it's about how much Profit you make. Apple has absolutely NO COMPETITION. I've probably been using computers longer than you have been alive. My first one was from a mail order catalog in the about 1980. Have had many since then - Several Dell, Gateway, HP, and Compaq. My IPad is by far, one of the best pieces of electronics in years (after digital recorders). Love my Ipod(s) and ITunes. Don't have an IPhone yet only because I HATE phones and rarely use them except to occasionally talk with out-of-town friends and relatives. Just bought a Mac Pro and once I get used to it, I'm sure I'll love it, too. Especially being able to interface all Apple products easily. Apple is a winning company and will be for many years to come.

Apple has a massive margin on most of their options. People will pay for what they see as quality. I know I do.

Profits are up. Margins are up. There's a new version of OSX. China is on the hinge. Everything is going Apple's way. That's why they have a market cap of $349 billion.

And you bought a Mac Pro? Nice.
07:20 AM on 07/20/2011
Actually it's disappointing when you look at the meat of it. Analysts (who are shareholders) ALWAYS predict a lower trend for Apple the next quarter. This ensures shares skyrocket at the next meeting when they break a supposed record.

Well, the fandroids must be pulling their hair out right now. They'll mutter "but but Android has larger market share, how could this be!" They have more widgets on their phones. It's customizable. They can 'root' the phone. Never mind that most of their 'widgets' and 4G have to be turned off in order for their phone to last 2 hours.

Folks it's not a matter of flooding the market with phones of variable quality. Some Android phones are good, many are bad. Apple is a premium brand like BMW. They don't need the same type of volume to be profitable. BMW sells much fewer 3 or 5 series than a Ford with it's Focus but BMW is having record breaking years. Just a thought folks.

I am not pulling my hair out right now lol. I think my phone is still better. Most people that buy Apple don't know anything about electronics, so I doubt they would know anything about what the Apple products are made of. Just like their computers. All one needs to do is find out what parts work with the OS and make an identical system at half the cost. Same parts as a PC could use. So if you think it is all about quality you are mistaken.

Your post is just proof that Android people and Apple people speak completely different languages. An Apple person says "quality," and the Android person immediately leaps to the components. Trust me when I say: the Apple person doesn't mean "best, most fastest chipset and sweetest new RAM" when they say "quality."

Hate to be a nit-picker, but the headline on the front-page link for this story is very misleading. "Apple crushes expectations"? That sounds like they disappointed investors ... crushed their hopes. Instead, we discover that the company exceeded expectations. Yes, I'm an editor - and in my publication that would not fly.
