Brooklyn's Do Or Dine's Foie Gras Donut Sparks Outrage Among Animal Rights Activists

Activists Hate Foie Gras Donuts, Protest Restaurant

Vegan blogger Annie Hartnett is so outraged by Brooklyn restaurant Do Or Dine's foie gras donuts, that she's started a petition in protest.

"Foie gras production methods are well-known to be cruel, made by force-feeding ducks and geese several times a day using a metal feeding tube" the letter reads. "The birds' livers are engorged to ten times their healthy size. Birds should not have to suffer for donuts."

The petition currently has 693 signatures.

Hartnett thinks the duck and goose liver are likely from Hudson Valley Foie Gras in New York, the largest foie gras farm in the country, and cites an undercover video from animal rights group Compassion Over Killing that reveals "the horrific tortures that occur on the foie gras farm."

Do or Dine chef Justin Warner tells Gothamist, however, that he actually sources his foie from a farm in Pennsylvania, and notes, "People love this dish. They go crazy for it. But I'm lucky if I serve 30 doughnuts a week—we're not exactly cranking them out over here. People all over the world are signing this petition, condemning us, telling us we're monsters, but the one percent of people who are actually coming here and eating them are pretty jazzed."

A new counter-petition from Arielle Norman, "Please Keep Serving Foie Gras Donuts", currently has 99 signatures, and claims it would be cruel "to stop making [the donuts] several times a day before I have a chance to come and try them."

The delectable dessert donut runs for $11 at the popular restaurant. which was opened recently by some alum of The Modern.
