Afghanistan, Iraq Soldiers Returning Home With Untreatable Lung Disease In Some Cases, Doctors Report

By MALCOLM RITTER   07/20/11 06:01 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- Some soldiers have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan with an untreatable lung disease that interferes with their ability to do physical exercise, possibly caused by inhaling toxic material, doctors report.

The illness is rare in otherwise healthy young people, Dr. Robert Miller of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., and colleagues say in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Their analysis can't show how common the condition is in the troops nor positively identify its cause. But 28 of the 38 diagnosed soldiers in the analysis had been exposed to a sulfur-mine fire near Mosul, Iraq, in 2003. That suggests they inhaled a significant dose of sulfur dioxide, a known cause of the lung disease, called constrictive bronchiolitis, Miller said in a telephone interview.

Dust storms and the burning of waste in pits may also have played a role, he said. Identifying the cause would help with prevention, he said.

The soldiers, referred to Vanderbilt from Blanchfield Army Hospital at Fort Campbell, Ky., were evaluated between 2004 and 2009. The diagnoses were made after lung biopsies. At least half the soldiers have left the service with a disability rating. The researchers said they have counted nine more cases since 2009.

In an email, R. Craig Postlewaite of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense and two other Army medical experts said they had "some concerns" about the lung biopsy procedures and the diagnoses. They said they're working with several authors of the report and others to do further research.

Whats the rationale here? Leave the troops in place because we dont have work for them at home and their salaries are already mandated? The home troops in both countries are already better trained and armed then the opposition. So the only question left is will they fight? Will they fight the good fight we hope they will fight? When we made the decisions not to eradicate the poppy fields because we couldn't or wouldn't put in a substitute it doesn't matter whether we stay in another day, wee,k month, or year the criminal element is going to come in and take over because that is where the money is.We've taken our revenge for 9/11 Osama is dead and we can not afford to rebuild the 3rd poorest nation in the world. The war is the Afghan economy and whenever we leave there is going to be trouble. For the American people its elective not mandatory to be there and we need to take care of home first.

Dear Huffington Post, would you please place this article on your Front Page. At least for a day or two. Not everyone goes to your "war wire" section and this is very important news for all the public to become aware of. Thank you.

I am with stargazer13 concerning these middle eastern conflicts. Bring our troops home now. All of them. We can find some work somewhere, even if it is to stand on the U.S. borders and protect our nation at home. At home is the operative language.

Open for debate:
I don't like the idea of conscription as it amplifies the call for defense. However, I'm wondering if we would see better treatment of our veterans and more limitation on initiating wars if we had 100 per cent conscription, as is practiced in France or Sweden - no privileged youth free of active duty or spared dangerous locations. What are your thoughts?

Hmm... I wonder what chemicals we are testing in this war. We fielded dozens of chemical spray agents in Vietnam, most famous of which is Agent Orange. Burning of waste is nothing new. We didn't have issues with lung disease from burning xhit then, why now? Dust storms is a likely contributor, we have valley fever in Arizona from fungi in the the dirt. However, correct me if i'm wrong, but I'm not sure if Afghanistan has the same extreme dust storms as Iraq does. Sulfur exposure explains the Iraq war Vet, But what about Afghanistan?

The simple statements that it's either burning of waste and/or dust simply does not add up, and the sulfur mine is just an isolated cause in of itself. If you know your most-recent military history you can see there is a major hole in this problem.

I see a lot of posts "Thanking" Uncle Sam for screwing up our Vets. Sure there are a lot of things the military and the VA could do better. But ultimately if you--the people want better treatment of your military members and vets, then YOU need to make your elected representatives aware and you need to stay on it. Soldiers and Vets have to fight so hard when they come back to get their benefits. Benefits that are theirs by contract, but are often hidden behind hamhanded bureaucrats and mountains of red tape and instructions that obfuscate the process rather than simplify it. There are not enough able bodied vets to fight for this and make their Politicians do what is right. They need you--the Civilians to help them. They need you to have their back. Without you, they are vulnerable and outnumbered and often too sick or injured or disabled to fight for what is their's by right. So dump the bumpersticker patriotism and help them.

Who would have thought expending record breaking amounts of Depleted Uranium munitions and then moving in right where you did that could have health effects?

Wonderful. I'm glad my husband didn't get blown up by an IED so he can come home to die slowly of lung disease that the Army will say he's faking.

Exactly. Agent Orange anyone?

Brought to you by... Monsanto! Now taking over the food supply with GMO.

Thank you Major General Butler for your keen insights. I hope you are what you say you are. I think there should be a Congresional investigation going back to the Gulf War, of just what and how chemical warfare transpired. I believe Saddam poisoned the Kurds in Northern Iraq (mustard gas)? and I'm sure some of our troops made it there. This is a national disgrace to our military who gave their lives for a lost cause and greedy corporations affiliated with the Bush administration. It meant nothing to poison people as long as the oil was secured. Now our retired soldiers have to die a slow death and I feel awful aboout that. Bring everybody back from Iraq and Afghanistan because the government is culpable for all these sick soldiers.

While people seem not to be concerned they really need to stop adn consider the costs of these military adventures in the long term. While the overall cost of Afghanistan and Iraq are estimated to be $2.6 trillion when medical adn disability costs are factored in the price tag over a twenty year period rises to $4.9 trillion. And this is not to consider the periphery costs of emotional and mental distress to citizens who are caught up in acts which unstable Veteran's bring about. War is not a simple solution to any problem, never has been and never will be.

Bring them all home, for Pete's sake...what a waste...I thank my stars for our servicemen and women every day, but instead of bringing peace and democracy, we're sowing discord, strife, and disease amongst Iraqis and our OWN PEOPLE!!

That's willful self-deprecation, and for what?? Some oil??

Bush's Middle East "goodwill mission" has overrun it's course. A simple cost-benefit analysis would easily show how ridiculous this all is...
