Allen West Email Prompts Congresswomen To Call For Apology From GOP Lawmaker

Allen West Email

ANDREW MIGA   07/20/11 07:13 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — Five Democratic congresswomen on Wednesday called for GOP Rep. Allen West to apologize for his email tirade against a fellow Florida lawmaker.

Reps. Gwen Moore of Wisconsin, Carolyn Maloney of New York, Donna Edwards of Maryland, Jackie Speier of California and Lois Capps of California denounced West for calling Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz "vile, despicable and cowardly" after she criticized his stance on Medicare.

"His words were nothing more than personal attacks," said Maloney, who appeared with her four female colleagues at a news conference. "It's incredibly disrespectful."

The congresswomen, who said they were friends as well as colleagues of Wasserman Schultz, also called on the GOP leadership to rebuke West for his outburst.

The controversy began Tuesday when Wasserman Schultz called into question West's stance on Medicare during the debate over a spending cap and balanced budget bill before the House.

West, a first-term Republican from south Florida, responded by sending an email to numerous lawmakers as well as Wasserman Schultz, who also is the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

The subject line of the email: "Unprofessional and Inappropriate Sophomoric Behavior from Wasserman Schultz."

The email said: "Look, Debbie, I understand that after I departed the House floor you directed your floor speech comments directly towards me. Let me make myself perfectly clear, you want a personal fight, I am happy to oblige. You are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up."

In her remarks on the House floor, Wasserman Schultz said: "The gentleman from Florida, who represents thousands of Medicare beneficiaries, as do I, is supportive of this plan that would increase costs for Medicare beneficiaries. Unbelievable from a member from south Florida."

She was alluding to a GOP-backed bill to reduce the debt and amend the Constitution to require a balanced federal budget.

In his email, West said Wasserman Schultz has proven "that you are not a Lady" and "shall not be afforded due respect from me!" He said he was alerting House leaders to her "heinous characterless behavior."

Moore said that such attacks are often made against women who seem strong and knowledgeable.

"There's always someone who will rebuke them (the women) for not being a lady," Moore said.

There is some history between the two Florida lawmakers. Wasserman Schultz and other women protested outside West's campaign office about columns that West wrote appearing in a biker magazine. The protesters said the magazine denigrated women.

As that gentleman asked McCarthy "" At long last sir, ""Have you no decency"" Same question to the new barbarian on the block..

If you are referring to Rep. West as a Barbarian, I think you should know better. It's racially insensitive and takes us back to a time where calling anybody who wasn't white a savage was an acceptable method of demeaning them.

I fail to see how his chastising the congresswoman for cowardly, caddy, pseud-anonymous, behind-the-back comments made when he was out of the chamber is sexist. Her behavior was unladylike. It was adolescent and reminiscent of the middle-school locker-room. DWS is simply the resident congressional note-passer. West stood up to his bully. Unfortunately it looks like nobody will be giving Debbie a detention for her bad behavior.

what was in her remark being a bully?
07:26 PM on 07/21/2011
Maybe you can understand this: she put a little gun to his head and fired a tiny shot, and he started squealing like a little girl. And he's still squealing. LOL.

She should get one, though she won't. I do not know how Allen West was elected in this district. He is unhinged from reality. No When i say that I mean he does not recognize the importance of Medicare in his distract and would rather make his constituents under Medicare suffer the consequences of his actions to eliminate it rather than realize that Medicare is an important part of their lives. He feels it is him against the world in an attitude that I haven't seen in a while. A terrible attitude that should be voted out. Hopefully the people of his district do the right thing next time around.

A good number of volatile, if not unstable people populate the republican (tea party) ranks in congress and beyond right now. Things are potentially violent. this is not without precedent. Ms. Wasserman could have been much more provocative (which I don't feel she was at all). Remember that Senator Charles Sumner was beaten with a heavy, thick cane on the floor of the senate by Senator Preston Brooks. Sumner had attacked Senator Andrew Butler in a speech and used language bordering on the profane. He even mimicked Sen. butler's speech and physical movements during his speech (Butler had recently suffered a stroke). Brooks was Butler's nephew, as I recall. Before Brooks broke his cane and walked out a fellow Democrat pulled a pistol to prevent anyone interfering with the beating of Sumner. So friends, it can get a lot worse, and probably will. Hisory repeating itself, when will we listen?

Good grief, check out her actions and comments to this man! He finally spoke up to correct her vile accusations and actions!

He should apologize to it as soon as everyone apologizes to Palin and Bachmann.
03:42 PM on 07/21/2011
Yeah asking what they read is akin to calling someone vile. Get a cold cloth and lay down. I have also for the past week seen every liberal pundit say that attacking Bachman for headaches is pathetic and weak and refused to pile on it, as opposed to say Karl Rove.
When Palin apologizes to the people of Alaska for quitting on them perhaps people will start to believe Sarah has something of value to say. Bachman on the other hand has a husband calling those not exactly like him {gayish} barbarians.

Neither Bachman nor Palin has earned an apology, sympathy or even a vote on Rotten Tomatoes.

Bachmann's husband is gayish, so he is going after people exactly like himself. Otherwise, a perfect comment.

I think Allen West is just a small man with a narrow mind. What surprises me is no Repub women called on him to apologize.

They're all intimidated by a woman like Wasserman Schultz. The Republican female representatives all run on what they and their friends believe. Democratic female reps have real intelligence and back up what they say with facts, not made up or twisted history.

this is so high school perhaps we should send them all back so they can learn some manners and maybe a bit of American history and government while they're at it! I don't think having "children" in office is good for the country or anything for that matter.

Wasserman Schultz is a liar. She referred to West as "The gentleman from Florida”. He is definitely not a “Gentleman”.

There is no rule in politics which says you have to like or even get along with other reps from your state. There are several rules of the House however and while West chose not to stay on the floor after his comments, he had to have known the next person in line to speak was from his state and also from a S. FL district. IMO, he's still a freshman congressman learning about the rules. He left the floor and she had every right, within the rules of debate, to reference him in her comments.

It appears this West is avoiding responding to the issue and is instead attacking the speaker. I have found many people that when they have no adequate answer or excuse for their behavior they resort to this kind of behavior. It is unfortunate we have another person in a position in our government that is unequipped to fulfill their responsibilities in an adult rational manner.

I'm almost positive my 14 year old son would know better than to send someone an email like that. If a citizen sent West an email like that, he would probably get all high and mighty, play the victim card, and call the police.
