(RNS) Campus Crusade for Christ is out. "Cru" is in.

The 60-year-old evangelical ministry announced its new name at a staff conference in Fort Collins, Colo., on Tuesday (July 19), saying the old name had become problematic.

"We've been having issues with two words in the name -- campus and crusade," said Steve Sellers, a vice president who oversees the ministry's U.S. operations, in an interview.

Though the Orlando, Fla.-based organization began on campuses in 1951, it has expanded to more than two dozen ministries focused on topics such as families, athletes, the military and inner cities.

When Campus Crusade was founded by the late Bill Bright and his wife Vonette, the word "crusade" typically referred to the large, stadium events held by evangelists like Billy Graham.

"In today's culture it carries more weight in terms of its historic meaning," Sellers said, with people thinking "more to the days of the Crusaders and dealing with the Middle East as opposed to a positive use of the word."

Cru isn't the only religious organization that has moved away from "crusade." Wheaton College, Graham's alma mater in Illinois, changed its mascot from Crusaders to Thunder in 2000. Graham's son Franklin leads "festivals" instead of crusades, and his grandson Will holds "celebrations."

Most recently, Crusader Lutheran Church in Rockville, Md., changed its name to Living Faith Lutheran Church out of concern that the old name had "militaristic" and "non-Christian" overtones.

Sellers said the Crusade-to-Cru change is part of that trend.

"We don't want the words that we use to get in the way of the message that we have," he said.

In a Frequently Asked Questions feature on its website, the ministry explained why leaders also opted to take the word "Christ" out of its title.

"Cru enables us to have discussions about Christ with people who might initially be turned off by a more overtly Christian name," the response read. "We believe that our interaction and our communication with the world will be what ultimately honors and glorifies Christ."

During the extensive renaming process, Sellers said researchers found that 9 percent of Christians, and 20 percent of non-Christians, were turned off by the original name. A total of 1,600 alternatives were considered.

The name Cru -- already used on many U.S. college campuses -- will be used throughout the United States. Most of the international ministries affiliated with Cru use a name other than Campus Crusade for Christ. Its Canadian affiliate is called Power to Change and European ministries use the name Agape.

Sellers said the name of the umbrella organization, Campus Crusade for Christ International, will still be used for now. The global organization includes more than 25,000 full-time and part-time people in 191 countries.

"From the beginning, Bill (Bright) was open to changing our name. He never felt it was set in stone. In fact, he actually considered changing the name 20 or 25 years ago," said Vonette Bright said in a statement. "We want to remove any obstacle to people hearing about the most important person who ever lived -- Jesus Christ."

And you don't believe this is dishonest?

Getting a copy of the Bible in recorded form (which can be obtained almost free or very cheaply)and listenin to it all the way through just once will help one learn more about "true" Christianity than I learned from taking a "Billy Graham ministry" mail order Bible course offered on one of his
TV presentations by about a million factor, in fact, I felt obligated to write and tell them where they made some errors.

I'm sorry, but "CRU" is a dumb name. I predict that they will change the name again shortly. I also think that it is quite interesting that they are trying to make the organization sound less "Christy". That should tell you something right there.

So, Christians now have to disguise their actions because Christians have given Christ a bad name.

Essentially Jie, the religion doesn't stand well on its own two feet. This is the 21st century however and knowledge expands in leaps and bounds. Christianity is faltering tremendously which is good for the USA.

There is anothe "C" that is probably the most important one: Cult. When a whole bunch of people come at a person with any message- especially if the messengers are young- one thinks of a mind controlling cult. It is for thatbreason that I sm not keen on "campus crusades, Cru, Lets Just Be Friends or any organization that is out to coherce someone into coming to Jesus. In my opinion, it's not the word"crusade" that turns people off, it's the inability of it's messengers to plant seeds effectively. I've studied many of the well meaning young messengers and most don't know how to bait the hook; many come across as zealots in the making. While I agree that the Gospel must be shared to the world, one must remember that it is really a take it or leave it issue. Iwould imagine hay on every campus are Christians who at sometime will be able to share the Gospel in a non cult like manner. I think that it is that deliverybof the Gospel( informal, non threatening and not cult like) is the best way to connect eith someone that is interested. I think that campus crusades and going out two by two on a campus frightens people, not connects with people

That if thou shall confess with the mouth The Lord Jesus and believe in thou heart that God raised him from the dead-Thou shalt be saved--For with the heart man believes unto righteousness and with the mouth --Confession is made unto salvation---------Romans chap-10---verses 9--10

Harvard, Yale, Princeton were all christian institutions before they became secularized while watering down the presentation and message of Christ to become more acceptable to a secular world. It is a slippery slope that removes Christ from christian institutions inevitably turning what was once christian into secular. You would think Campus Crusade would know better. Very sad.

I understand what they are trying to do, but one of my biggest fears right now is that the world has soft sold God and Jesus way too much. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying shout HELL HELL HELL all over the place. But people have lost respect for the power and authority of God. We have decided we have to mumble around people so they don't hear us come across too boldly about the message of Jesus Christ.

Well, NO WAY!! Shout it from the mountain tops! Jesus Christ Lives and God is Watching. We will all be held accountable of how we accept and treat Him. If we are rejected for that message...well, so be it. But at least we can stand proudly knowing that we did the best we could with the time we had.

"But people have lost respect for the power and authority of God."

You say that like it's a bad thing. It's not, because authority come not from your imaginary friend, but from the wealth and power of Big Religion. It's about money and control, plain and simple. People have lost respect for religion, with good reason.

"We will all be held accountable of how we accept and treat Him."

No one will be "held accountable" for how much they fetishize a fictionalized historical figure. That's nothing but a scare tactic used by religion to accrue wealth and power. Surely someone who works in Big Religion would understand that.

"Big Religion". I don't know where you think I worship at, but we are far from big. Now my God...well, that is a whole different matter...cause He is huge. As for being accountable, that is true, but I'm not telling you that and then passing the collection plate or anything. I'm just warning you. Not trying to be hateful or overbearing. If we were driving down the road in a car, and I noticed you were speeding, and I said, "Hey, be careful, the cops like to give tickets if you speed here." You wouldn't call me names or get mad at me...you'd say thank you and slow down. That is all I am trying to do for people.

So you take "Christ" out of the name? Hypocritical, no?

I have to agree with you on this one. We are allowing the world to dictate to us way too much what is acceptable. We are CHRISTIANS. We should be proud to proclaim it, not sneak it into the conversation.I get the "crusade" word. A lot of words change meanings, but at the same time...we are in a crusade. It is a battle front, and the bigger the world makes their weapons, the more we step back.

But fear not everyone...David didn't drop Goliath with all of his weapons and armor...all he needed was one little stone.

Much like how atheist organizations call themselves free thinkers and other things along those lines. So the free thinkers out there who are saying that they're trying to hide that Cru is for Christ, better start thinking a little more.

Religious proselytism is dying, and nothing can save it. As standards of living improve across the world, it becomes increasingly more obnoxious to shove your religious views onto others.

Yeah, let's take the name of Christ out of it so we can ambush unsuspecting people who don't know what's coming at them. What an underhanded way to try and recruit more followers by not showing that they are overtly a Christian group. Christians are losing their hold on the American public and they know it, so they are just coming up with more clever ways to disguise their bigger agenda.

Before when someone talked about Christ or Jesus we thought of Billy Graham or some smiling friendly Pastor who spoke like Grandpa from The Waltons - now people not just in the US but worldwide think of Want or Power/Money, Tealiban/Tea Party, Franklin 'I hate Muslims' Graham, Pat 'I hate Gays' Robertson, Sarah 'I can see Russia from my House' Palin, Rapturists, Lets all bomb the Palestinians, Pick on a minority!....

I pray that such Evangelicals will dwindle and save the planet and humanity from their so-called religion
