New 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Clip Released, Staring James Franco, John Lithgow (VIDEO)

James Franco Planet Of The Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes," the big budget prequel to the 1968 classic, "Planet of the Apes," is set for release on Aug. 5, and this newly released four-minute clip offers viewers the most extensive look into the "Apes" prequel yet.

And if the clip gives us any clues, it looks like the flick's going to be pretty explosive.

The summer action flick stars James Franco, who plays Will Rodman, a scientist testing his new attempts at curing Alzheimers on captive ape subjects. Unfortunately, one of the cures works too well, and an ape named Caesar begins to mutate and evolve.

Featured in the extended clip are the film's stars: Franco, John Lithgow, and Caesar one extremely overprotective ape (played by Andy Serkis, who also played Gollum in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy). Lithgow's character suffers from Alzheimer's disease, and when he makes the mistake of getting into the wrong car, an angry neighbor gets a little too heated -- and pet ape Caeser gets a little too protective.

The film also stars Freida Pinto ("Slumdog Millionaire") and Tom Felton, in his first non-"Harry Potter" role.

Just what the world needs - apparently no non-hominids were actually involved. Movies as video game or video game as movies. Can anyone tell the difference?

after the Oscars and the interviews following, I think something is seriously wrong with that boy (Franco)

He's very intelligent and very creative. He's hooked up different and alot of people won't accept or embrace that.definately not the ordinary Jake Gyllenhaal-type guy... THANK GOD!!

Now that's what's called prejudice. You're already pre-judging him and you haven't yet seen the movie.

Freida Pinto is hot... i hope she doesn't eat goat or smell like the turban, suit jacket and sandal wearing chaps that drive all the cabs (just sayin')...

Wow, this looks VERY interesting....!

The CGI still looks unconvincing. But what's sad is that a CGI creation is a better actor than James Franco.

Another failure.

OMGosh....I can't believe it's coming AGAIN! I hated it the first time won't give it the time of day this time..... I can't stand remakes, redos, sequels, three-quels or beyond.... They are NEVER as good as the original, when are the producers, writers, actors or whoever the movie-gods may be, going to get it!!! What a waste of time, talent and money....STOP IT! I'm just sayin'...

You thought the originals were too good to be remade? That's hilarious.

They ain't remaking "Gone With the Wind" here, it's friggin' "Planet of the Apes".

I'm just sayin'...

Good acting, bad writing.

I hope the CGI looks better at film resolution than it did in this clip. I'm really rooting for the film, but Caesar looks pretty synthetic in all the clips I've seen so far.

Wow, I couldn't disagree with you more. That is some of the best CG I've seen.

Admittedly, I'm pretty biased. I do occasional 3D work, so I know exactly how difficult it is to create organic looking textures. Starships and fantasy creatures are easy, since our brains don't have any point of reference for things we've never actually seen.

But I've seen many apes in my life (zoos, safaris, family reunions, etc.), so my brain immediately went into "that's not a real animal" mode. The physics don't seem natural. The gravity seems slightly off, and the motion blur and lighting on the chimp model look artificial.

Watch it again. I'll bet you'll spot a few of the things I'm talking about with a second look.

That said, I still plan on seeing the movie. I'm may be critical, but the ten year old in me would never pass up a chance to see a Planet of the Apes movie.

See you there.

On a side note: For me, the best ape CGI was King Kong. But gorilla's have way different skin than chimps. Gorilla skin can look plastic-y and still look real. But chimps have a skin texture more like humans, so it's nearly impossible to fake, for other human eyes, anyway.

This is the second reworking ot the "Apes". Why can`t Hollywood make something original instead of remaking or "reimagining" classic films? I won`t see it. BTW, whos James Franco?

If you truly have never heard of James Franco, any commentary you have about "Hollywood" is called into question.

Unfortunately the Hollywood I once knew made original, entertaining pictures that showed creativity, originality and were acted by "real" stars. Also, you went to theaters-not multiplexes to see them, but I seriously doubt that you remember the moviegoing experiece as it once was.
