'Anonymous' Hackers Claim To Breach NATO Security

Anonymous Hackers Nato

CASSANDRA VINOGRAD   07/21/11 11:46 AM ET   AP

LONDON — A group of computer hackers on Thursday claimed to have breached NATO security and accessed hoards of restricted material.

The group called Anonymous said it would be "irresponsible" to publish most of the material it stole from NATO but that it is sitting on about 1 gigabyte of data.

Anonymous posted a PDF file on its Twitter page showing what appeared to be a document headed "NATO Restricted" and dated Aug. 27, 2007.

"Hi NATO," the group teased on Twitter. "Yes, we haz more of your delicious data," hinting that more would be released in the next few days.

A NATO official, who could not be named under standing rules, said the organization was aware that a hacker group had released what it claimed to be classified NATO documents on the Internet.

"NATO security experts are investigating these claims," the official said. "We strongly condemn any leak of classified documents, which can potentially endanger the security of NATO allies, armed forces and citizens."

Anonymous is a loosely organized group of hackers sympathetic to WikiLeaks. It has claimed responsibility for attacks against corporate and government websites worldwide.

The group also claims credit for disrupting the websites of Visa and MasterCard in December when the credit card companies stopped processing donations to WikiLeaks and its founder, Julian Assange.

On Tuesday U.S. authorities announced 14 arrests in connection with December attacks on Internet payment service PayPal that were claimed by Anonymous. Two other Americans, four Dutch nationals and one Briton were arrested on suspicion of participating in other attacks against companies and organizations, U.S. authorities said.

I love these guys. I hope they keep thumbing their collective noses at Babylon. So long as they don't abuse the information they steal (and I don't think that's their agenda), they're heroes in my book.

here's a quick question:

suppose, just suppose the response from another country to this 'data' causes us to get into yet another war? or gets someone killed?

still ok?

who's vetting the vetters?

"suppose, just suppose the response from another country to this 'data' causes us to get into yet another war?"

It won't be the data that causes the war, will it? It is the acts revealed by the data that are acts of war.

". . . or gets someone killed?"

Same thing.

". . . still ok?"

Yes. The idea that we should aid and abet lying and coverups by our government against We the People "or else" is craven and should be treated with open disdain.

I refuse to tell you until the moderators release my other two comments, or until Anonymous brings down this site once and for all.

You should realize that 99% of the news articles on this subject are not correct. Anonymous, once again is not conducting these "hacks" hackers did.. said group is LulzSec, ie LulzSecurity. The so called Anonymous "members" that were arrested were caught using a program to slow down the loading of the Paypal website in December in protest of Paypal stopping donation payments to Wikileaks. Said program does nothing more than auto push "F5" on a keyboard to refresh the page. Paypal was not hacked, no ones personal information was leaked, no one was hurt, no equipment was damaged and no data was breached.

I find it funny that there is no outcry that the same thing has been done to numerous corrupt governments police and security websites around the globe using the same tool via the Anonymous collective. However, when you mess with Paypal you get the horns of the FBI.

I would like to know why you don't want the bankers and wallstreet goons heads on pikes.. hmm..

Enough is enough with Anonymous. Now they are playing with the lives of soldiers in the NATO alliance and as well any cooperative individuals and groups working to benefit our national security overseas. The NSA, CIA and DOD need to hunt these individuals down and put them  on trial under a capital charge. These dangerous hackers should be executed if for treason if found guilty or  housed for life at ADF Forence aka SuperMax. These hackers are threatening national security for several nations and needed by treated like the true dangerous criminals that they are.

we're not going anywhere - unless there is Moutain Dew Code Red.... (and of course there is jail, most entities get a bit upset by breaching their security and then posting stuff). I'm guessing most of Anonymouse will soon be called "bottom".

Now you don't have to wonder why I have NEVER put my credit card number on the 'net.
Or maybe the govt's sites just aren't very secure.
Whatever! But I don't trust the security of the machine that I am writing this with.

This is the point of Anonymous that people don't realize - it's not cyber terrorism, it's not anarchy, it's all about forcing governments to realize and admit that the people are in control.

Hacking and security are two sides of the same coin. Both require the same skill set. Both are deep into game theory. The current rash of hacking has brought this out of the closet.
Advantage to hackers, every announcement is a victory. Disadvantage to security, any boast only creates a challenge to greater attack, and any arrests are credited to police not the security programmers.

I keep hearing and reading about Anonymous being "loosely organized". I suspect that the reality borders more on complete disorganization.

We will see a lot of vain attempts to make extreme examples of those who are caught, but the question still remains: Exactly which or how many mosquitoes do you smash in order to make them stop stinging you?
