Kenneth Harding Shooting: SF Police Now Say Victim Killed Himself

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A police shooting that stirred community outcry and street protests took a stunning turn Thursday when investigators said they now believe a 19-year-old Washington parolee being sought for questioning in a Seattle murder fatally shot himself in the neck.

Kenneth Harding died Saturday in what San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr previously described as a shootout with police in which Harding fired the first shot.

However, police Cmdr. Mike Biel said Thursday that preliminary autopsy results showed the caliber of the bullet that killed 19-year-old Kenneth Harding did not match the caliber used by police.

"We believe that the fatal wound on Mr. Harding's body was self-inflicted," Biel said.

John Sanchez, a criminalist at the San Francisco Crime Lab, said the .380-caliber bullet found in Harding's head was not consistent with the.40-caliber guns issued to San Francisco police.

"The bullet could not have been fired from any department-issued firearm," Sanchez said.

Medical personnel found an unfired .380-caliber bullet in Harding's right jacket pocket, but the gun itself was not recovered, Biel said.

"We want to take this opportunity to reach out to the community in locating the correct weapon," Biel said. "We believe the weapon that we are looking for is a .380-caliber handgun."

A gun recovered by police late Saturday as part of the investigation was a .45-caliber pistol and could not have fired the fatal shot, police said.

The only other wound to Harding was a gunshot to his left leg, according to Chief Medical Examiner Amy Hart.

Authorities had not determined whether Harding shot himself on purpose or by accident, police said.

Harding was the main person of interest in last week's South Seattle shooting death of 19-year-old Tanaya Gilbert, Seattle police said. A Seattle police spokesman said he did not have information on the caliber of the gun used in the shooting of Gilbert. No weapon was recovered in that case, Seattle police Detective Mark Jamieson said.

In April, Harding was released from a Washington state prison after he served 22 months for attempting to promote prostitution involving a 14-year-old girl in King County.

Harding had initially been stopped by police in a routine check for fare-beaters on the city's light-rail train system, police said after Saturday's shooting.

Police said Tuesday that gunshot residue on Harding's right hand backed officers' accounts that Harding had fired the first shot, as did audio of the shots captured by a gunshot-detection system used by San Francisco police.

On Tuesday, 43 people were arrested in a raucous rush-hour march to protest Harding's death at the hands of what all believed at the time was police.

On Wednesday night, Suhr was shouted down at a town hall meeting in the city's Bayview neighborhood a short distance from where the shooting took place.

Keevin O'Brien, a minister who co-organized Wednesday's meeting, said he was still trying to process Thursday's developments.

"Nonetheless, we have a dead young man that could've probably changed his life if the police had gotten to him sooner," O'Brien said. "This should not have happened the way it did."

O'Brien said the Bayview community is going to have a hard time with the findings.

"They're not going to believe this," O'Brien said. "They're so broken and hurt by what they already saw. This is going to be hard to digest."

Biel said Thursday that he also understands likely cynicism in the community.

"I understand how the community feels, however, our investigation is based on total fact. That's what we have now," Biel said.

O'Brien said he planned on going out in the community Thursday evening to "check its pulse."

Like my daddy said act civil be treated civil !!! At like an animal be put down like a wild animal. Why isn't this story of a white man and why is it always the black man in the news why does the news reporters only report on black people crimes. ????? Anyone with a answer
10:21 PM on 07/28/2011
It sells papers, and re enforce the image that certains people wants to betray of other races! Not all Blacks are criminals or uneducated. Not all Asians are superior students, Not all Whites are racist, Not all Japanese are docile, not all people from Mexico are lazy and sneaked into this country, not all Jews are great Lawyers,....just some of the stereotypes we learn to repeat and believe because it has been programmed in our psyche by mass information media.

If one reads the full article, the story becomes much more clear. Basically as the guy was running from the officers, he pulled a gun, probably accidentally shot himself, dropped the gun, staggered for about ten feet (during which officers heard him, drew their guns and fired), and expired. The video shows someone picking up the weapon Harding used in the shooting, during which he probably also picked up the shell casings. When officers found out who took the weapon and went to recover it, the criminal gave them a different weapon.

... I don't believe a word any Bay Area cop says. Just because the gun was not issued to a police officer, that doesn't mean a police officer didn't use it.

Shot in the right rear of the neck - no powder burn on the body - residue on the shooters hand - no gun found - no shell casings (consistent with revolver type weapon).
Gun powder these days contains tiny plastic "flags_ in sizes colors shapes that are assigned to manufacturers by law to allow powder trace back. Where is the data on this ???
This guy was shot with a cold piece someone had on their ankle - get the copper tv cam footage.

You are making wild assumptions based on nothing. The article didn't say that there wasn't a powder burn, it just didn't mention it. The article also didn't say that shell casings were not found.
01:21 AM on 07/25/2011
A companion article states that shell casings were not found - and stated police thought witnesses picked them up and kept them. Same article mentioned powder test of the hand but no mention of a powder burn on the rear neck. I would like to see the full autopsey report. - At ease ossifer.

A .380 round is not for revolvers, as opposed to a .38 round. Second not all gun powder has those flags, and obviously you don't know when the .380 round was manufuactered.

Furthermore, it is strange that you believe that the medical examiner is lying, along with the eyewitnesses who back up the police. However you do believe the accounts of lookeyloos WHO were NOT even at the scene when the shooting occured. Says a lot about you.
01:16 AM on 07/25/2011
I am suspicious of shootings potentially involving the police.
Medical Examiners are notoriously political in their findings. While powder was supposedly found on the decedents hand it was not mentioned being upon the neck which should follow in a self inflicted wound.
Further - the entrance site of the supposedly self inflicted wound was in the mastoid area of the neck - a very difficult if not impossible shot if the weapon had much barrel length, for a suicide shot. I find eyewitnesses essentially worthless - we have all seen the gorilla in the room footage and eyewitnesses are subject to confusion. A large percentage of what you refer to as "I SAW" is an image INTERPOLATED by the brain into an image. Not extracted, or converted but a projection of what the brain thinks is going to be in the field of vision milliseconds later. As a very experienced magician - I make trained observers see things that are not there all the time.
An experienced street cop can "manage the observations" of an untrained observer.
As to powder flags - the ammo would have to be approaching 10 years age to be free of flags - handgun ammo in particular. I am more inclined to let the decedent's remains tell the story I am very comfortable with my tentative conclusions - pending a review of the autopsey

So we are saying that a guy who was put in jail for having sex and pimping a 14 year old girl in washington, is released then shoots 4 people and kills one woman in seattle is a hero because he was shot by cops? If he had a longer wrap sheet, would he be magically promoted to super hero? Uhhmmm.... I think we need better heros than a pedophile/pimp/murderer.

Blacks are just as incensed with this thug character as you. He deserved death for these crimes, but not vilgilante justice. Does all white people agree with the Norway murdering Terroist...of course not! Don't blame an entire group of people for criminals who just happens to be of the same skin color.
12:44 AM on 07/29/2011
I have no idea were u got the idea that his color bothered me or anyone else, his crimes did. And having cops shoot at someone who shot at them first, is hardly vigilantly justice.

It is hilarious the people that African Americans choose as martyrs. Harding was a violent criminal but blacks talk about him like he's a saint. Classic.
02:59 PM on 07/23/2011
"African Americans" didn't choose anyone as a martyr. some people in the bayview area of San Francisco (many of whom appear to be black) are piggy backing their hatred of police on the incident.

I'm black, and I have no problem with Kenneth Harding being black. As i speak out agains the obvious prejudice against the police in this matter, it's really all prejudice that I oppose, such as the idea that somehow 50 million people are somehow on Hardings side.
01:58 PM on 07/28/2011
But if he was a law abiding citizen he would be alive today !!! But in the black people eye's is that even with no record. This person was marked for death by the white cops !!! As I said before fire all white and asian cops only black cops on the force. I'm sure the white will get blamed for a black mans death.
03:34 PM on 07/23/2011
What is hilarious to me is that some people think that all African Americans think alike, support what ever other African Americans do or don't do, and all believe we have the same issues, enemies, prejudices, and mindset. We all share one narrow world view and see things through the same tinted lenses, yep, that sounds balanced and reasonable.

This is definitely a bad shoot in an even worse hostage situation.
03:59 PM on 07/23/2011
The article said that the police officer who did the shooting was forthright about the circumstances. That's really what most reasonable people want, if you make an error, even when the stakes are another's life, admit it, don't cover it up. Accept and acknowledge the gravity of the cost to others and be accountable. This officer did that.

Way to pick and choose details. If you read the article you would see that the unarmed man attempted to become armed when he tried to take the officer's gun.

Suspect runs from police who are shooting at him but at one point decides he wants to die. Does he stop so that police can kill him? No, he decides he wants to die by his own gun, so he shoots himself while running and being chased. He falls in the middle of a sidewalk after commiting suicide while running. Cops are behind him and they surround him. They "supposedly", while guns are drawn allows someone to come up and just take the gun and the shell casings away. A few days later, they "find" 1 bullet in his jacket. The "examiner" discovers that he had residue from a gun on his right hand, the hand that while running was able to move to the right back side of his neck and shoot through the back of it....while running! LOL. They dont even make movies this bad!

At no point does the police or medical examiner state that the suspect wanted to kill himself. Nor do they say that they are missing shell casings. Your use of quotes and misuse of facts to make this into a conspiracy theory borders on insanity.

A similar case here in Texas, and before they can get their lie straight, the officer resigns. Funny thing however, they are fighting tooth and nail to not release the officers police cam. Wonder why?

Cop are human.
Criminals are human.
Humans don't always do the right thing.
The evidence will always tell the truth.
Let the evidence run the course and save the outrage for something concrete.
10:06 AM on 07/23/2011
That really sums it up. We all know what humans are capable of, be it good or bad. No matter the "uniform" we each put on everyday, we all have a part in the lives of others. Seek peace, not turmoil. In a situation like this, if we are honest, we know that anything might be true. Wait
on the evidence.

3. The gun has not been found
4. The gun had NOT been fired

"Nonetheless, we have a dead young man that could've probably changed his life if the police had gotten to him sooner," O'Brien said. "This should not have happened the way it did." I highly doubt this 19 yr old man could be rescued from the life he was living, the police had gotten him many times even for trying to prostitute a 14 yr old and nothing changed. I do however find it odd that they didnt find the gun at the crime scene. Youd think that if he shot himself the gun would be laying next to him or something,.......

Bottom line, anytime a black person is involved a white person becomes an expert in black people! They magically get PhD's in how blacks think and react. What about Casey Anthony or the men that killed James Byrd or the hundreds of cops that "accidentilly" kill minority suspects, I guess they are innocent? WHAT A TYPICAL STANDARD!
