NYC Beats Out San Francisco For Most Walkable City

Animal New York reports today that New York City has beat out San Francisco for the top rank on WalkScore.com, which grades places on walking distance to amenities and "pedestrian friendliness".

The city as a whole scored an impressive 85.3 while San Francisco lagged behind at 84.9 (in your FACE, HuffPost San Fran!)

The top 5 most walkable NYC 'hoods?

Unsurprisingly, swanky, shop-filled downtown areas Little Italy, Soho, the Flatiron District, Greenwich Village and Noho topped the list, all scoring a perfect 100.

The least walkable? Well, Rikers Island, which recieved a 5. Also, Breezy Point and Roxbury, both in the Rockaways, scored a 31 and 25 respectively.

Animal NY also notes that New York has a lower pedestrian fatality rate than San Francisco.

To celebrate our victory, don't forget to walk it out this August when the Department of Transportation reinstates its Summer Streets program, which opens up 7 miles of Manhattan roadways to pedestrians and bicyclists on three consecutive Saturdays.
