Kate Middleton's Royal Wedding Dress Goes On Display At Buckingham Palace (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 07/22/2011 7:48 am   Updated: 09/21/2011 5:12 am

The Duchess of Cambridge's wedding gown, earrings and even the cake will be on display beginning this weekend in Buckingham Palace's ballroom, the Guardian reports. Already, 125,000 people have booked tickets for the summer exhibit, and with time slots for 600,000 attendees, it could sell out altogether.

The main attraction, of course, is The Dress. Royal Collection curator Caroline de Guitaut told the Telegraph, "The dress performed perfectly. But the Duke and Duchess also maintained a modesty that gave the event the feel of a big family wedding to which the nation was invited. There was a real intimacy in addition to the spectacle. Getting to work with the bride and the designer has made the experience extra special."

As a sartorial supplement, the palace will also screen an interview with the dress' designer Sarah Burton. Although Burton doesn't reveal the cost (the Daily Mail decided it was $400,000) or the former-Kate Middleton's measurements, visitors can peep her shoe size: 5-and-a-half (U.K., that's about an 8 U.S.), printed on the sole of her white heels.

Another Telegraph article describes the highlights from the exclusive video, including an explanation of the intricate lace flowers and shamrocks, sewn by Hampton Court Palace in Surrey:

"What we wanted to achieve was something that was incredibly beautiful and intricately worked. A lot of it was in the subtlety of the detail but it was at Westminster Abbey so it still had to have a presence," Burton said.

"The Duchess was very conscious that when she walked down the aisle she didn't want the dress to collapse so it was a real feat of engineering. We weighted the whole of the bottom part of the dress with canvas, and in particular the middle (of the train) so when we lifted the dress it would fall back in exactly the same position."

Naturally, there are already critics of the installation. Jess Cartner-Morley of the Guardian writes:

The weakness of the exhibition is that, for a wedding dress display, it is curiously unromantic. The dress is gorgeous, but -- apart from the side view, which we haven't seen before -- to be honest, the view was better on TV. All alone under the lights -- no tan, no smile, no scarlet-clad husband -- the slender dress is almost ghostly. Instead of all that bouncy hair, there is just the Cartier tiara lent by the Queen, suspended halo-like above the veil.

The dress will be on display until October 3. For those of you who can't make it across the pond, check out some photos below.

The dress looks too stiff -- they should soften it a bit by making it look not so "in place."

The dress was lovely. It's interesting to learn that it was weighted.

I was surprised that she wore heels on that day.

I like her simple bouquet, though I'm not crazy about lily of the valley.

Gotta agree with HM on the dress display. The only thing that could make itnwork would be Theramin music and Dr Smith shrieking.

The dress display looks like a scene out of Beetlejuice.

I really love Kate's style. She looks good in everything! I liked this story about what her go-to designer says about dressing her: http://blogs.forbes.com/bluecarreon/2011/07/05/meet-kate-middletons-go-to-designer/

Daily Mail said 5.5 (in other words, US size 8) "dainty." Since when is 8 dainty? I thought the real US 5.5 is dainty.

My question is: What happened to the cake? Is that where the ceremonial slice with William's sword took place, or did the cake have a slight wardrobe malfunction on the way to the display?

And the Queen has slammed the whole affair. I agree with her, there all a bunch of obsessed sicko's. Who in the hell cares? They are people not Gods or Godesses!

I absolutely agree with the Queen. A horrid display. This is such a beautiful gown and to have it sit headless on a mannequin is like looking at an apparition.
They can do better than this.

The gown was ugly, ugly. Who would waste their time going to view it?

And the Franklin Mint, for only $295, will sell you an almost-exact replica gown on a look-alike doll. So will one other company whose name I can't remember just now. A third company makes a cheap Barbie imitation that isn't worth the asking price.

The Mint will also, for $490 or so, sell you the pair: Kate in her engagement gown, and Kate in her wedding gown.

Sorry, William fans. The Mint made Jack Kennedy, Clark Gable as Rhett Butler and a few others. But no Prince Charmings. Sigh.

The gown was a flop. The veil is awful. The fabric used for it was limp and nasty looking and it looks worse yet on display. Being so short with three layers......just so terrible looking and incongruous with the dress and far too much detail going on..to busy.

It should have been one long flowing piece without so much detail. There was enough detail on the horrible bodice which looked like nasty molded form cups from a bra with lace thrown on top of them. The lace did look like it was blended into the bodice but like it was sitting on top of it. The lovely buttons down the back of the dress could hardly be seen because of the wrong choice of veil. In fact, this is the first time I noticed them in these photos.

The neck line was a terrible look for her and the collar came up too high on the back of her neck. I don't know what they were thinking when they designed this grown but it did not turn out well. It's a misfit design.

The grown just doesn't cut it. It's like a hodgepodge of many different looks, fabrics and lace all thrown together. Seriously the gown is NOT beautiful.

I think it honestly was the most beautiful gown that I've ever seen. It would seem that Kate and I have the same taste, as it's exactly the kind of dress that I would choose, if I were as fortunate to be able to afford it! It was traditional, feminine, and romantic....it absolutely took my breath away. It wasn't overly dripping with lace, it was just fancy enough without being overdone, IMO. **STUNNING** dress/shoes for an equally stunning/refreshing young lady. It would seem as if the Queen approves of her, even genuinely liking her! Grandchildren tend to mellow you a bit, I think....
