The tragic bombing of a square in Oslo, Norway, and a shooting that took place at a youth camp on the island of Utøya on Tuesday prompted an outpouring of reaction from political leaders around the world.

The Associated Press reports:

In Oslo, the capital and the city where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded, the bombing left a square covered in twisted metal, shattered glass and documents expelled from surrounding buildings.

Most of the windows in the 20-floor high-rise where Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and his administration work were shattered. Other buildings damaged house government offices and the headquarters of some of Norway's leading newspapers.

Stoltenberg was working at home Friday and was unharmed, according to senior adviser Oivind Ostang.

Below, a slideshow highlighting reaction from world leaders to the news:

I wanted to personally extend my condolences to the people of Norway. It's a reminder that the entire international community holds a stake in preventing this kind of terror from occurring. We have to work cooperatively together both on intelligence and in terms of prevention of these kinds of horrible attacks.

At a time for solidarity Hillary Clinton adds "The United States condemns all forms of violence against the innocent, wherever it occurs" to her condolences. Well done, politician! :-P

I find it ironic that the people responsible for over a million Iraqi deaths are condemning a fellow terrorist.

The high risk of inciting riot or massacar like this in Norway would justify state intervention when Geert Wilders and his right-wing nationalist groups expresses controversial opinion rather than allowing them to be camoflaged under freedom of speech. Individual freedom should always be preserve except in cases where harm to others is likely. Many are strongly motivated to believe things which aren’t true that Geert Wilders and his right-wing nationalist groups are expressing all over. Allowing false views to be circulated freely may actually allow them to take root amongst the gullible in a way that they would not have done, had they been silenced. I expect Geert Wilders and his right-wing nationalist groups to come out again in the public to take credit for the mass massacre in Norway by Breivik like they did after the election in Denmark.See, society only exists in virtue of a common underlying set of moral principles. If these principles are undermined, then the society's continued existence may be threatened. So intervention may be necessary for the preservation of society. If Hittler and his gang were stopped earlier.. now the justification to incite violence is based on immigrations/Islam, an old trick to manipulate the sentiments of the ignorant majority. Therefore, thought, speech and writting should only ever be censored when there is a clear risk of incitement to violence. Wilders and the so called extreem right wing group must be stopped just like Bin Laden.”

Whenever you see all caps just avoid it at all costs. Not worth the effort. All caps usually means they've hit the bottom of the bottle. Probably nite-nite time soon for him/her.

Excuse me, MSM, but exactly what do we hope to see from "world leaders" here...?

Will one of them say, "Okay, so something bad happened in Oslo - am I supposed to care?...

or, "I extend the heartfelt sympathy and good wishes of the entire French/German/ Zulu/Tasmanian public at this time of universal mourning" - (without asking the permission of the populations of those nations to do so...?)

My point is, does it matter one jot what those leaders say, when I could predict with 95% certainty exactly what they would say?

The reality of the tragedy and what to do about it is what matters, not how many empty speeches are made about it. I would just like to see the perpetrator tried, sentenced to a million years in jail and then totally forgotten, while the appropriate support - in private - from all the neighbors, family and friends of the berieved would be something which could be taken entirely for granted and requires no song and dance from the media.

21 years is maximum jail time in Norway. And you can be assured that the berieved will be taken care of not necessarily in private. Norwegians have a great government and it takes care of its people. The don't have to rely on the "generosity" of private citizens

"Our hearts and prayers are with you and most especially those who have lost loved ones during these callous attacks, the South African Government reiterates that violence is counterproductive to efforts aimed at bringing about lasting peace in any country," said President Zuma.

"We will continue to stand together with the Norwegian government to defeat the enemies of peace. The government of South Africa urged that those responsible be brought to justice," President Jacob Zuma told BUA News on Sunday.

I would request the world leaders to do everything possible to eleviate the deep shock of the bombing and killing event at Oslo at the same time to please not turn away from the Murdoch case.
I strongly feel this bombing and killing incident may be linked with Murdoch case to distract the attention of the world community of nations to a different issue. It may have been under all circumstances master minded by Murdoch himself.
Murdoch case must be pursued with utmost sincerity to successfully drag the most famous criminal of the twenty first century to the court for trial without fail..

That's a bold statement and it makes my version look rather over-polite in comparison.

Fanned for having an excellent grip of the laws of modern probablility.

Frankly, how a "world leader" reacts to something like this is of no importance.

I'd like to know right now how grateful Rupert Murdoch is for this timely and time-taking respite from the unwelcome attention he has been receiving of late. In other words - could we please continue to have the OTHER dramatic news headlined in our popular media...?

Thank you.

This is really a terribly sad day This senseless terrorist has killed the innocent who have absolutely no part in political decision making. No religion, no philosophy approves the killing of the innocent except the philosophy of the Oslo killer. Who taught him that philosophy?

Basically it is true that the responsibility for killing the innocent lies with those who perpetrate it. Many of us are inclined to submit to this. But in very many cases, whatever the laws say, the moral responsibility for violence is divided between those who perpetrate it and those who provoke it and i would say the rightist politicians and religious fanatics are the ones who provoked this.

For instance many including the Nato forces escape all responsibility for their brutal drone attacks and killing the civilians in large numbers in Afghanistan by taking refuge in a kind of political philosophy and principles that their Governments advocate and amplify.

If any one kills an innocent person, it would be as if he slew the whole people, and if any one saved a life it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. In spite of such moral teachings many continue to commit excesses in the world.

I noticed that someone thinks that muslum terrorist killed more people than christian terrorists. History shows from the crusades to present day this isn't really true. America under the guise of fighting terrorists and in Iraq and Afghanistan have killed tens of thousands of muslums and whats worse our own people, and injured tens of thousands more. We invaded countries, occupied them, and forced our will on them, while telling ourselves we're the good guys.

I will say it again, I believe the leader of both sides is the DEVIL, he does not want people to love one and other. Until the people ,all the people can truly love one and other and keep working to establish and endless

The Crusades were organaized wars, not terrorism. Both sides met on fields of battle. Both sides suffered casualties.
This does not fit the definition of terrorism.

Hatrid of ones fellow man is nothing new and was there through out mans history. There are many excuses to hate others, but at the top of the list is they believe different from You. Beliefs are most promoted by religions. So the very thing religion which people turn to to lead their lives leads them to hate others. All is done under the guise of their God wanting them to do this.

This was a right wing terrorist, and supposedly a christian. It is a reminder of what's happening hear, and we see right wing terrorists who we elected willing to break the country for their beliefs.
All terrorists act on what they believe when they are so convinced everyone else but them is wrong. Truth, rights, and facts mean nothing, because they know better.

He is a libertarian. He is not a Christian. He blames Christianity for not doing enough to preserve Norway's ethnic erosion by Muslims. He hated the Nazis and Communists.
Now, what is happening "hear (sic)?" Whop are the "right-wing terrorists who are willing to break the country for their beliefs? Are you talking about those people who want to control government overspending and the growth of the size and power of government? Isn't that what the War for Independence was all about? How did "those" people get in office? They were elected in a free and open election. Do you consider President Obama and Democrats terrorist because they believed their opponents are wrong? Of course not. Truth is in the eye of the beholder, those YOU oppose also have rights, and my facts will match your facts anytime. Some of yours are right, and so are some of mine!

In the West there is a long history of Christian rightists hostility towards Islam under the assumption that Muslims reject Trinity. Many politicians out of ignorance have few scruples about attacking Islam probably because until the rise of the Soviet Union, no polity or ideology posted such a continuous cultural challenge to the West as Islam.

Equally for the first time in history, Muslims have begun to cultivate a passionate hatred of the west due to European and American aggressive and oppressive behaviour in the Middle East and South Asia. Fundamentalism and radicalism is there in all religions.

Is the Norwegian killer influenced by Falwell’s Moral majority and Christian Right who saw the Soviet Union as the evil empire and now the Muslims.

It is wrong to assume that Muslim extremists or Christian extremists are typical of their faiths. Bin Laden was not the incarnation of Islam nor Rabbi Meir Kahane’s terrorist policies represent Judaism nor Geert Wilder’s philosophy represent latest European re-thinking.. Until and unless there is equitable solution to the economic imbalance and political exploitation extremism is likely to grow rather than diminish.
