America's Most (And Least) Walkable Cities

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 07/22/11 09:07 AM ET   Updated: 09/21/11 06:12 AM ET

Can you walk to your local grocery store, restaurants and other amenities? Or does each trip require a car ride?

The answer may have an impact on your health. According to one study, people of average height who live in walkable neighborhoods weigh eight pounds less (10 pounds for men, six pounds for women) than their car-bound counterparts. And now Walk Score, a Seattle-based company that evaluates the walkability and transportation of cities all across the country, has released its rankings of the most -- and least -- walkable cities in the U.S. Using new census data and advanced algorithms, Walk Score's latest ratings rank the 50 largest cities based on whether various amenities are within walking distance, assigning each a walkability score between 0 and 100 (from "car-dependent" to "walker's paradise," respectively).

Taking the crown this year was New York City, ousting the previous winner, San Francisco. According to Walk Score CTO Matt Lerner, the change is a result of the 2010 census data -- formerly industrialized neighborhoods in areas like Brooklyn, for instance, have become more livable over the past 10 years since the 2000 census.

Take a look at Walk Score's results -- their heat maps of each city reflect the walkability by neighborhood (red is bad, green is good). And, as Lerner points out, "Even un-walkable cities have some very walkable neighborhoods."

Don't live in one of these cities? You can search your Walk Score for any U.S. address (and see the full rankings of thousands of cities) on their website.

I wonder if there's a way to plot cities by "physical labor" ... for instance. Virginia Beach has very little walkable areas, but Suffolk is completely "unwalkable" (red). Meanwhile, there are plenty of farmers in Suffolk that get a full day's workout on farms...

Actually, Columbus, Ohio, between the Ohio State University and downtown, is a walkable tourist attraction. Art galleries, upscale restaurants, a movie theater, Goodale Park, beautiful Victorian homes, and National Historical Landmarks such as the Ohio Theater and the Palace theater.
But, avoid the rest of Ohio.

On my bucket list, is NYC. I visited there after 9/11 to do my Christmas shopping.
The thought of living there for some reason, just really excites me. The weather does not.
I would love to live w/o a car :)

There is something about New York that draws people towards it. It has a unique vibe to it that I see nowhere else. It is truly the greatest city on earth.

Phoenix should be on this "bottom of" list, no one walks around, except the crazies, in the heat.

Don't try to walk in Little Rock. You will get run over by rude drivers.

The list didn't include my city, Columbia, SC. But in the area where I live here, there are walkable places all within ten or fifteen minutes from my home, a mini-shopping mall, restaurants, convenience stores, plus much more, including my bank that is only a block from me. For more distance places, I use city transit since I am handicapped and do not drive.

As far as being safe, after dark its better NOT to be out, and because of recent attacks on a lone walker, there has been curfews placed.

Not having a car, I walk all the time. The stores and our doctor are only a mile or two down the road and hubby and I enjoy walking around our neighborhood. Any place else we wish to go, we take the bus.

I am glad to see Philadelphia made the list. The heart of "downtown" Philly, Center City, is easily walkable from Delaware River to Schuylkill River, and even beyond throughout University City and Spruce Hill.

Except on days like today, when the heat index tops 114F, at least.

I would think chokeland would be first. The only building that hasn't been burned is the welfare office, so you can see for miles! And for some "entertainment" you can go see the faiders take it in the shorts during football season, or watch the ganstas make a living by popping old ladies who don't look like they can defend themselves!

Reading the comments to AOL articles is usually more fun than reading the Sunday Funnies. My vote for best city goes to Honolulu, Hawaii. Every kind of store, entertainment venue, and service available within easy walking distance.plus clean air, moderate temperatures all year around, and clean beaches. I was stationed in Pearl Harbor, HA for two years and went into Honolulu nearly every week-end. Walking around late at night after a concert was stress free. Believe it or not, when I had to walk a "Fire Watch" post for four hours once a month I loved every minute of it, especially when my assignment was to walk after dark. Granted, the area I walked was on the base and very safe but the point I want to make is the sky was so clear you could see more stars than you thought existed and the air is polution free. These are things that are more important to me than how close the local grocery store is to my apartment.

I agree with Joebudgie. I live in the Kaimuki area of Honolulu where I walk to work and can walk to restaurants and shopping on Waialae Ave. That includes where I go for my 6 month servicing for my Toyota Prius. If i feel energetic I could walk to Waikiki or Kahala as well.

Its been years since I was stationed there at Kaneohe MCAS and spent a lot of time in town after dark. When I went to Honolulu and spent time on Hotel Street, it was after dark and even walked into Waikiki and back. Never had there been any problems of anykind.
