'Spider-Man' At Comic-Con: Andrew Garfield's Speech Video, 'The Amazing Spider-Man' Costume Surprise (VIDEO)

Spider-Man isn't supposed to publicly reveal his identity, but in this case, Andrew Garfield's earnestness made him a superhero all his own.

The star of the upcoming big screen reboot, "The Amazing Spider-Man," Garfield rushed to the microphone at the film's panel at Comic-Con on Friday, clad head to toe in a cheap, Halloween-style Spidey costume. He began his speech with a bit of a freak out, in an American accent, before ripping off the mask to reveal -- to a wild crowd ovation -- that he was the man they were all there to see.

Then, Garfield launched into a heartfelt speech -- in his real British accent -- about what the film meant to him, and how appreciative he was of the fan support:

"Stan Lee says that the reason why Spidey is so popular is because all of us can relate to him, and I agree. I needed Spidey in my life when I was a kid, and he gave me hope. In every comic I read, he was living out my and every skinny boy's fantasy of being stronger, of being free of the body I was born into, and that swinging sensation of flight. And upon receiving his power, unlike most who have become corrupted, he used it for good. And I think that we all wish we had the courage to stick up for ourselves more, to stick up for a loved one more, or even a stranger you see being mistreated, and Peter Parker has inspired me to feel stronger. He made me, Andrew, braver. He reassured me that by doing the right thing, it's worth it. It's worth the struggle, it's worth the pain, it's worth even the tears, the bruises, and the blood."

You can read the whole speech over at Vulture.

That wasn't just pandering to the audience; Garfield has made similar statements before.

Garfield lent an epic tone to the film, too, once he was on stage and taking questions.

"We're approaching this like it's Shakespeare, like a Greek myth, these comic book characters are our modern myths," he said (again, via FirstShowing.net, where you can find an excellent live blog of the whole event). "We still want to see our favorite characters on the big screen, and in 3D I might add. So for me it's just another chapter in the long history of a comic book story that means so much to so many people."

The crew also revealed new footage from the film, covering both Peter Parker in high school and in his enhanced, post-bite costumed body. The scenes include Emma Stone as love interest Gwen Stacy, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, Sally Field as Aunt May and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. In one, Parker gets chided for his crush by Uncle Ben; in another, we see him struggling with his new powers, as well as building his new web launchers and getting chased by the police.

I was actually a little upset when they announced Toby McGuire wouldn't be doing another Spider-man and that in fact it would be a complete reboot, but this kid is so completely charming that I don't think I'll mind watching him as Spider-man. And I really love Emma Stone so I'm really excited for this.

There's no need for an origin story or ten feet of hair

On the fence about him as Peter Parker, but gosh, he's a sweet guy.

Tired of reboots, esp. reboots that come hot on the heels of other reboots. How about planning it out better? How about - let's commit to a spider man arc, so we know we will do 5 movies, or maybe more, and we'll plan to accommodate the chance that leading actors change without having to reboot the whole thing? Like the highly successful James Bond series, what what?

Too many reboots and you wear out the character. Do story arcs, but keep reboots a long time apart.

I'm on the fence about this movie. Going far enough into the back story to involve Peter's parents is interesting, looks like they might be doing something "plot twisty" there, but the rest of the movie looks kinda blah. It just doesn't resonate with me for some reason. I don't know, maybe it's just me.

er.. what's with all the talk about 'reboot'...

Any of us who have read comics longer than 2 years know these things are always getting rebooted, crossed-over, flash-backed, parallel universed, and generally bolloxed from a continuity perspective.

But that's what makes them fun.

Why the reboot? How about just continuing the story from the last one? While I enjoyed the Batman reboot, and thought it Bale did a great job with it, I still wanted to see him battle some of the many other supervillians in the Batman universe. The same goes for Spidey.

i say bring back the military draft to the u.s. so the power elite might also see their kids shipped off to war

enuf with the 'speeches' about bravery

i watched golf on tv and heard 'what a brave shot'
the only brave shots i know about are soldiers staring down al-qaeda with a rifle

THAT'S BRAVERY

the rest is oprah-esque crap

you do realize what thread you are in? I don't think a US draft would affect British Garfield...

I urge people to watch movies such as 'Boy A' and 'Never Let Me Go'...Andrew Garfield is an EXCEPTIONAL actor, I knew he was someone to watch after seeing him in these movies, his roles stick with you and touches you in a way not many actors can with their characters, a very rare gift...I was skeptical about the ''reboot'', but when I knew Garfield was involved I knew that it would be worth watching!

Boy A is fantastic and Garfield is exceptional in it. I didn't get much of a release but it's excellent.

this guy's hair is awful. it's like he has a small head and lots of hair to make up for it.

Oh. I think just in that trailer it looks much better than the Tobey Macguire-Sam Raimi version. I thought those films were to silly and campy, even for a comic book. It looks like far better actors are filling out the roles for this film.

A mess of a movie. Did they just reuse the same script from the first one? It's too soon for a reboot, and Garfield is totally out of place playing this character.

If they want any audience, they better market it to the gays, and make Andrew's costume as tight as possible, to show off his assets.

you probably shouldnt comment on something u know nothing about. The new movie goes back as him as a teenager, and not only am i excited about the reboot, but so are tons of other people. The other spiderman movies were horrible. Maguire and Dunst were both awful in it, not making it believable or fun, but more lame and cheesy. I think they made the right choice. Really looking forward to it. Its nice to see that the people making these new movies like dark knight and xmen first class are actually caring about the characters and story instead of relying on the brand name and special effects to make a buck out of it. This movie is obviously doing the same.

I agree and disagree. I liked the first two, the third was clearly out of ideas. I think it was time for the original team to move on.

I'm looking forward to the new version and i liked the old. It's not a competition.
