Republicans Float Short-Term Debt Ceiling Deal As Democrats Insist On Long-Term Plan

WASHINGTON -- Republicans tried to set the stage for a short-term agreement to raise the debt ceiling on Sunday, even as Democrats continued to insist that a long-term deal needed to be worked out.

"I understand why they're saying they won't sign a short-term [deal], but I think they won't have any choice, and I think that's the only answer right now," Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

In a briefing with the Republican conference on Saturday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced that he would press for a short-term deal -- with major spending cuts paired with longer-term deficit-reduction strategies -- as a way around the current impasse.

This new focus was apparent in the statements of Republicans who appeared on the Sunday morning public affairs shows. They accused President Obama of trying to push the date for the next debt ceiling increase beyond 2012 because he doesn't want to have to deal with it during his re-election campaign.

"It's interesting that since 1972, Congress has raised the debt ceiling for six months or less 38 times. So we can surely extend it for five or six months -- have this committee of Congress come back and report on the way to continue to reduce our deficit, and in that way avert the disaster and make forward progress," said Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) on CBS's "Face the Nation." "The problem, I think, is that the single most important thing to President Obama is extending this beyond his re-election campaign. He just doesn't want to have to deal with it again."

"I know the president is worried about the next election. But my god, shouldn't we be worried about the country?" added Boehner on "Fox News Sunday."

Democrats, however, made clear they are still against a short-term deal, arguing that a debt ceiling raise should not be clouded by the politics surrounding the 2012 elections.

On "Face the Nation," White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley reiterated that the administration is opposed to a short-term raise. And a Democratic official familiar with negotiations told The Huffington Post that at a 50-minute-long White House meeting on Saturday morning, the president "said he would not accept a short term extension because it could lead to a downgrade" of the United States' credit rating.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), also appearing on CBS, said that a short-term deal could potentially harm the credit rating of the country.

"We absolutely do not want to default," he said. "But this notion that we're going to replay this movie in four or five months -- that we're going to face this whole thing all over again -- the American economy is too fragile at this point in recovery for us to allow that to happen.

"We've been warned -- not by political advisers," said Durbin. "I hear the Republicans. They want to make this a campaign issue. Ignore the political advisers for a moment. Listen to the economists who are telling us -- all of them together -- do not lurch from one five-month period to another when it comes to the credit rating of the United States of America. Not at this moment in history."

Boehner should get his House in order. Plain and simple. This type of gridlock is not acceptable.

No retreat, no compromise. America's rendezvous with socialism will surrender on unconditional terms. The Republic will be restored.

"They accused President Obama of trying to push the date for the next debt ceiling increase beyond 2012 because he doesn't want to have to deal with it during his re-election campaign." YES... but we KNOW that the reason THEY want it to be DEALT WITH now is just because they want it DONE (NOT because the "PRESIDENT WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT DURING HIS RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN!") Yeah... we're all aware of that!

The Republicans wasted all that time developing a plan that wouldn't pass just so they could force Obama to sign off on a short term deal. This would mean we'd have to go through this all over again and we already know the Reps aren't going to give in on their pledge; instead of allowing Obama to lead the country out of a recession, he'll be too busy trying to negotiate with people that don't want to compromise (meaning raise taxes). In 2012 the Dems need to sweep both Houses and allow Obama to get his stamp on this recovery. Don't allow Republicans to divert your attention by attacking Obama instead of clearly explaining how doing what Bush did for 8 years is going to work this time.

LOL! Your post is full of ignorance. To bad the democrats haven't even wrote a plan to present to the house. Obama keeps say "they, they they." How about the democrats doing something instead of whinnng and complaining. No President has ever been relected with unemployment over 7%. I think 2012 is going to come as a shock to you.

You don't want to debate with me because your ignorance would truly shine. Quit being a robot and accept that Obama has a long term plan that includes revenue increases. It's the same plan Clinton had when the government was finally beginning to pay down the debt. It's funny that the GOP keep saying that's what they want, but they won't accept a plan that actually does it since it has Obama's name on it and it contains a tax increase. You're a fool because you're fighting for something that would put more Americans out of work with no help from the private sector.

If you want to raise you credit score.. you reduce your debt and cut spend less than you bring in..Cut the pork.. cut the foreign aid.. revoke the tax exempt status of all the non profits .. Force the politicans to turn in their pac money to the treasury to use to reduce the debt..Ban Lobbyist from washington..

How do you know when Obama is lying ? Answer.. His lips are moving..
10:30 PM on 07/25/2011
This bunch couldn't tell you what they had for lunch.. They have no clue where the money is going and they pretend they are going to cut.. I set forget left and right.. Let's joined together and recall the whole bunch..Then let's cut their pay and pensions back to what normal people get.. If a shunk and a politican were crossing the street which one would you swerve to miss?
10:26 PM on 07/25/2011
The dems are the ones playing politics here.. They passed the buck here when they crippled the economy with obama care instead of focusing on the budget and debt ceiling when they controlled both houses of congress... Now they are playing the blame game and the class warfare card.. This whole thing is sickening that a bunch of self righteous politicans would try to play the american public for fools..They are hoping no one is paying attention.. Well when the dollar is worthless and people are sweeping it up in the street what will the use for currency then??

Why don't you actially say something factual lol. He is totally right. When Bush came into office the country was 5.3 trillion in debt. When he left he added 5 trillion to that in 8 YEARS. Obama has been in office just over 2 YEARS and has added 5 trillion in that short amount of time.

Remember the Ryan plan and the back lash to it? Well, these plans that are being put forward are just offshoots of it and if anyone of them get approved expect more to come.
